Guest Incandenza Report post Posted October 23, 2002 Self-explanatory. My pick: "Sister Ray," by the Velvet Underground.
Guest LooseCannon Report post Posted October 23, 2002 I don't really have the attention span for long songs. But "Desolation Row," by Bob Dylan is about as good as it gets I think.
Guest Flyboy Report post Posted October 23, 2002 How long is "Coma" by GNR? I think it's around 9 minutes, but that gets my vote anyways.

Guest Incandenza Report post Posted October 23, 2002 Alice's Restaurant - Bob Dylan You're thinking of Arlo Guthrie, not Dylan.
Guest The Amazing Rando Report post Posted October 23, 2002 shit...I am EDIT: I saw Bob Dylan on the page and it must have clicked in my head somewhere... it's still a kick ass song

Guest godthedog Report post Posted October 23, 2002 i love me some velvet underground, but i can't see how 'sister ray' doesn't get a little boring after about ten minutes. i'll probably get shot for this, but i think if they hadn't limited themselves to one take they could've found other little stuff to put in it to make it last 17 minutes and still keep it grating & inventive & interesting. dylan has some awesome long songs, and i have to disqualify him just cause i can't choose between them. if it were a minute longer, 'won't get fooled again' would easily get it. i think i'll go with 'the trilogy' that closes daydream 'nation. Guest Incandenza Report post Posted October 23, 2002 Feh. "Sister Ray" is the cat's meow. And I normally don't like extended jams like that. (By the way, do you have VU's "bootleg" Quine recordings that came out last year. Three discs of nice stuff, with EACH one containing really, really, really long versions of "Sister Ray." I dig it.) As much as I love Daydream Nation and the trilogy that closes it, I can't vote for it. It's three different songs, as far as I'm concerned.
Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted October 23, 2002 "Sister Ray" is one of few Velvets tracks I deeply dislike. It just gets old. Of course, if you want something really bad, find a copy of Joy Division's *cover* of the song...there's two things that NEVER should have come together. I'm a tremendous fan of Tool's long tracks. If we're allowed to tie together "Disposition," "Reflection," and "Triad" off of Lateralus, totalling about 24 minutes, that's my personal favorite. If not--and probably not is best--then I'll flow to the live "Pushit" off of Salival, or the 14-minute "My Generation" off of The Who Live at Leeds. If we absolutely MUST have studio versions...then call it either regular "Pushit" or Television's "Marquee Moon."

In a world where "Lonesome Cowboy Bill" exists, how can anyone trash "Sister Ray"?

Guest Cerebus The Aardvark Report post Posted October 23, 2002 Well, if we could include live stuff, I'd have a field day. However, I'll stick to studio stuff. "Supper's Ready"--Genesis "Stability"--Death Cab For Cutie "The Musical Box"--Genesis That's about it. I can think of a lot of great songs around 7-9 minutes, but 10 minutes is a lot more challenging.
Guest Incandenza Report post Posted October 23, 2002 ::marks for Death Cab for Cutie:: "Stability" is terrific, but I'll forever wave the "Sister Ray" flag.
Guest Cerebus The Aardvark Report post Posted October 23, 2002 Though it will get me to wear a red B on my shirt (for blasphemy), I don't like Velvet Underground. That is all.
Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted October 23, 2002 I have to burn the "Sister Ray" flag. My roommate listens to it endlessly, because it's his favorite Velvets track. I can barely handle it once a day, much less two or three times.

Guest Kinetic Report post Posted October 23, 2002 Hey, I don't really like "Sister Ray" very much either. In fact, I don't particularly care for the whole of White Light/White Heat. It's noise, basically, and outside of whatever historical context it occupies it comes off as nothing more. As for the actual topic: "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" Bob Dylan "Cowgirl in the Sand" Neil Young That's about the extent of it, actually.

Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted October 23, 2002 Echoes-Pink Floyd. That's probably the best example I can think of. I too agree with Tool's longer songs. heh, most of what I listen to averages in length from 25 seconds to 3 minutes.

Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted October 23, 2002 Rapper's Delight -- S. Hill Gang... That's over ten minutes??!?!?!?!?!?!?! I find that hard to believe... "Chase" - Giorgio Moroder (Midnight Express Theme!)
Guest Cerebus The Aardvark Report post Posted October 23, 2002 "Achilles...The Agony & The Ecstasy" - Manowar (This actually lasts 28 minutes..) *marks out for Manowar* Damn, they rule in that camp way. I love them. Kings Of Metal is a classic album. I thought about Floyd's "Echoes", but it isn't that great. "Supper's Ready" crushes it.
Guest The Metal Maniac Report post Posted October 23, 2002 Iron Maiden's "Sign of the Cross" and "The Clansman" are both excellent, and I'm pretty sure they're both 10+ minutes.

Thankfully, there *are* verses intertwined between the hippity hop...precious few, though.
