Guest Downhome Report post Posted October 23, 2002 I just got home from playing it at my local EB, as I was there buying Contra Shattered Soldiers for the PS2 (I'll go into detail about that if you want). Anyhow... ...it is NOT a Metroid game by no means. It is a run of the mill first person shooter covered up in the Metroid name, and very few things in common. There is no option for third person action, the "analyzing" feature is rather tedious (You have to analyze some things for you to know what they are, work an item, etc... and it seems to take forever while it's doing it. Why not at least make this feature run a bit faster?), and the Ball Roll seems SO out of place. You are in first person, but when in a ball it goes to third person, and it get's rather irritating switching back and forth. Also, the GameCube controller is obviously not made to deal with first person shooters. If you are used to using two joysticks to play a first person shooter, this will feel very weird for you as there is only one control for moving, and that is just so basic. It is sometimes hard to go where you just want to go. It looks outstanding, one of the "prettiest? games I have ever seen, with some kick ass effects, sounds, among other things of this such. When the enimies splatter on your interface it is awesome also, just great. For a first person shooter, it's above average, but for a Metroid game... ...well, it just ISN'T a Metroid game. They should have given you the option for first or third person, much like Hitman II gives you. It would have been incredibly simple, and I'm sure there are others out there who would have loved it as much as I. Go into this game expecting a future version of Goldeneye, with a few more features, updated weapons, etc... Whatever you do, do NOT expect old school Metroid, because you will not find it here. Guest Downhome Report post Posted October 23, 2002 That's fine.....what do people want anyways? A side-scrolling Metroid!? I got myself an old-school next-gen brand new Contra game today, so yeah, I wouldn't mind a brand new next-gen Metroid game, but that isn't what I'm saying... ...they should have it be an option for at least thrid person, trust me, it would have fit the game a whole lot better than the way it is set up right now. Guest KoR Fungus Report post Posted October 24, 2002 <<<That's fine.....what do people want anyways? A side-scrolling Metroid!?>>> What's wrong with side scrolling? Just look at how much better C:SotN is than Castlevania 64 and you have an argument for keeping Metroid side scrolling. And a modern day side scroller would be a hell of a lot more fresh than yet *another* FPS.
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted October 24, 2002 How many FPS are on the Gamecube? I can only think of a couple (The James Bond Game, Turok Evolution..there might be a couple I missed but generally the Gamecube doesn't have any good FPS) EDIT:If you want a sidescrolling Metroid, then you probably owe it to yourself to get a GBA and get Metroid Fusion, the official sequel to Super Metroid. Guest Kagato Otaku Report post Posted October 24, 2002 Off the top of my head - Bond: Agent Under Fire, Timesplitters 2, and Turok:Evolution. There's probably a few more I missed.

Guest Kagato Otaku Report post Posted October 24, 2002 *shrug* It's Gamefaqs. Logic and reason do not apply. You don't have the right to your opinion. You do have the right to theirs, which they'll shove down your throat like a flaming hot caber.
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted October 24, 2002 Off the top of my head - Bond: Agent Under Fire, Timesplitters 2, and Turok:Evolution. There's probably a few more I missed. I thought Timesplitters was 3rd Person. From all that I've heard about that, its a pretty decent game, but the fact stands that the PS2 and XBox have a ton more FPS than the gamecube. And I know Metroid Prime will sell based on the liscense alone (its been a while since there was a new Metroid game..). Sure Metroid Prime doesn't look or feel like a Metroid game, but I think that you just have to take the fact that Metroid had to evolve instead of being the same game (side scrolling) that it was 10 years ago. Guest Kagato Otaku Report post Posted October 24, 2002 I really dig this argument Downhome's having with the citizens of Gamefaqs here. Abridged Version DH: It's a good game, but it doesn't feel like Metroid. GF: What are you talking about? It won E3. You're just not playing the game the way it's supposed to. DH: What? GF: Your opinions are flawed. DH: The hell? I said I like the game. I just don't think it works as a Metroid game and that the controls are flawed. GF: Make up your mind, do you want a FPS or a "Metroid" game? DH: Huh? GF: Riiiiight. Nice try, lamer. We Metroid fans'll enjoy it. DH: *sigh* Jesus. SamusAran: This game is nothing like the other Metroids. That makes it genious. We obviously know quite a bit more than you.
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted October 24, 2002 I will admit that 98% of that is the mentality of the nintendo fanboy gamer, fueled by 8 years + of no new Metroid Game. Honestly, I was never into metroid as much as some people, but I did like the series and I will probably get Metroid Prime sometime soon (along with Mario Sunshine).. Conspiracy_Victim 0 Report post Posted October 24, 2002 Now I only played the original old school Metroid so I'm not totally sure what has changed over the years, but I felt like throwing in my bit. First of all, Metroid (as far as I know) has ALWAYS been a 3rd person game. Making a 3rd person game into a FPS has always seemed difficult, if not impossible, to do without losing some of the atmosphere of the game. Can anyone else imagine a first person...Castlevania? Yeesh it would just look like a bunch of updated Doom rejects wandering around a Wolfenstein castle. However, in 3rd person the Belmonts (and other characters) seem more tangible. Same with Metroid. When I think Metroid, I think of a little armored figure running (and rolling) up, down, and across my screen. Trying to put me into Samus' boots makes it seem almost generic. All the music and particle effects won't change the fact that it's basically the same as every other FPS. Again, this is just my opinion and hey, I personally liked Halo and several other FPS and may even check this one out once I get done playing Vice City. BTW: sorry Miyamoto but if the players' point of view is as the main character and the game involves destroying other characters in the game, it is a first person SHOOTER, not an FPA. also BTW: I check out Gamefaqs when I'm stuck at a certain point, but the message board looks like it's been overrun by 13 year olds and people who think that games should be able to be beaten at one sitting. Guest C.H.U.D. Report post Posted October 24, 2002 Why is this news? First Person Shooters absolutely suck on consoles. Gamepads have horrible player control. The only way they should be played is with a mouse on a PC.

Guest cynicalprofit Report post Posted October 25, 2002 Thank god I only play wrestling games and Worlds Scariest Police Chases (which is like the grandfather of GTA). Still, why in the hell would you make metroid a FPS, the side scroll idea was working fine. Even then, I think it would be better suited as 3rd person shooter like tomb raider, I mean the game was all about levels and given the cubes power, they could have made, huge fantastic worlds. I rememebr playing metroid on the Snes and being really impressed, even though it was a side scroller. But then again, I dont play anthing but wrestling and WSPC, and maybe a little UFC. Guest GeneMean Report post Posted October 25, 2002 I grew up on consoles as well, but I still believe PC's own consoles in every way, especially with FPS games. Amen to that. I was absolutely opposed to using a mouse in FPS. I don't believe there was mouselook in DOOM. Aside from that game, I was practically reared on FPS from Goldeneye. When I finally got a PC (and DF2:Jedi Knight) I finally gave the mouse a try. I wouldn't have it any other way. Back to topic though. I can't imagine playing Metroid in any other form than a side scroller. I just can't picture being able to do all those crazy jumps you were capable of pulling off in a first person context. As it stands a FPS Metroid isn't a title that sells me on getting a GC. Old school Metroid with GC graphics and I'd have already pre-ordered a system and the title. Oh well back to Battlefield 1942.
