Guest RedJed Report post Posted October 26, 2002 Thought I'd give a little update on the Lewis-Lesnar deal talked about this week earlier. I just got a comp issue of the Torch in the mail tonight and from what they say, Lewis officially took the deal off as of Monday as his schedule just won't allow it. The plan was to actually have this show not as a regular WWE ppv, but as a whole seperate show which would be a mix of boxing matches for the undercard and then MMA basically with Lewis-Lesnar and Angle-Butterbean. They were even working on getting it all worked out with the Nevada Athletic Commission to sanction the event in driving home the fact the matches would be shoots, which is also why there was no plan for this to be anything to do with worked matches on the card, or even with a WWE name attached officially to it. It was planned for Vegas in early February seperate from No Way Out (few weeks before it). I guess the WWE had two ppv slots reserved ahead of time with the brand split in hopes of doing two seperate shows that month, but then when that wasn't gonna happen, they thought of this. Would have made for a great leadin to Mania if Lesnar and Angle would have come out of the show looking good, and granted, they would headline Mania. Just curious if everyone thinks this would actually pay off for the WWE if they would have went through with this. Keep in mind Lewis was rumored to have been offered a 7.5 million payoff for this one match. I think it would have been very interesting just for the fact that it would have put a few workers into a direction that Vince has rarely tried. If Lesnar would have beated Lewis, imagine the mainstream coverage he would have gotten.
Guest justcoz Report post Posted October 26, 2002 If Brock and Angle came out victorious in their bouts with Lewis and Moore and WWE headlined them at Wrestlemania - it would have been absolutely HUGE!!!! It could have very well changed the fate of the business as there would be two WWE performers respected in the sports world for their amateur wrestling glories and taking down two boxers in a legit, non WWE sponsored, shoot fight! It's sad that this didn't take place because this news and the necrophilia stuff on RAW give me a bleaker outlook on the future of the business within the next year. This would have been GOLD for WWE. Of course, I know the obvious question is what if they lost? I would have put some disclaimer in the contracts that both Lennox Lewis and Michael Moore would have to set the following week's Raw or Smackdown for an angle. If the boxers lost, they could regain some heat by taking part in an angle where they maybe knock out Angle or Brock. If the wrestler's lost, they are complimented by Lewis and Moore for their athletic ability or as an alternative, take a bump so the wrestler can regain their heat on their showcase... I think this would have been good for WWE...

Guest Ram Report post Posted October 26, 2002 They BETTER start again soon. That would be BY FAR the coolest thing to happen in recent times. If Vince really wants this, you'll be seeing Lesnar on the news talking to reporters about how Lennox is scared to fight him. Lennox has a huge ego (so I hear), and that will most likely get to him. He can MAKE room for that.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted October 26, 2002 Lewis watched Raw.
Guest ShooterJay Report post Posted October 26, 2002 Before Anglesault beats me to it... Lesnar would have faced current world champion Lennox Lewis, and Kurt Angle, Olympic Gold Medalist, would have been stuck with fatass novelty act Butterbean?
Guest Brian Report post Posted October 26, 2002 No, he would have fought Moorer. They were trying to pair up guys of closer sizes.
Guest RedJed Report post Posted October 26, 2002 No, he would have fought Moorer. They were trying to pair up guys of closer sizes. Moorer was never an official option actually. It was always supposed to be Butterbean. He's a cheap commodity for the WWE compared to a 7.5 million contract Lewis wanted.
Guest NoCalMike Report post Posted October 27, 2002 Well the main problem in getting this deal done is that neither side wants to allow the other side's style. So naturally Lennox wants it to be straight boxing(brawl for it all) and Brock wants it to be more like UFC/Pride where you can take the opponent down and pummel them etc......the obvious thing is that whichever side gets their style to greenlight will get a HUGE advantage over the other one. I don't think Brock would have a chance under boxing rules, however I don't think Lewis would have a chance under UFC/Pride rules, and I am sure both sides concur with me and that will be the main reason this probobaly won't happen, unless they can find a middle ground. If Lennox was smart, he would retire before he did this, so if he lost, he could blame it on old age and he is "out of the game" of course if he did retire first, it would take a lot of credibility away from it. Guest DJ Jeff Report post Posted October 27, 2002 This would give the WWE alot of good media attention, which is what they need right now. I wasn't for this happening at first, but the more I think about it, it would be interesting to see. Plus, if Angle and Lesnar both headlined Wrestlemania 19, and both won, they would both look good heading into Wrestlemania 19. I hope this does happen.
