10 horror movies for $20 DVD set

Recommended Posts

Guest Ravenbomb

At Sam Goody the other day I saw a DVD set of 10 old horror movies for $20. Most of them I'd never heard of, or hadn't heard much good about (Don't Go in the Basement) but a couple of them were good movies, there was the original Night of the Living Dead, and the Vincent Price version of House on Haunted Hill and a few others. Anybody have this? Is it worth getting?

I'm thinking about picking it up as a birthday present for a horror-fan pal of mine, but with Spider-Man out Friday, I can't spend anything. If I get it, I'll let you know.

Depends on the company doing the movies and putting the package together. There are a lot of early and bad dvd prints of the movies you mentioned out there. You want good classic horror movie dvd's? Check out Creepy Classics

Well, I've seen sets like this and they usually are el cheapo DVD releases. However they aren't any worse than a video tape and last longer so for two bucks a movie it's still not a bad deal.

I checked the links. They're probably ok copies if you just want the movies, but don't expect any extras or top flight prints.

I agree. Get this set and if you like any of the movies you can always upgrade to a better disc.

Satanico, were you actually the 666th member of the board or is that rigged?

Most DVD releases by Brentwood, Front Row Entertainment, Madacy and all those other cheapo companies usually have horrible picture and sound (I really hate how those are the only companies releasing certain martial arts films).

But if you think that's a good price, its worth a try. You can always upgrade or sell it after.

it does have some extras. I don't remember what specifically (I know there were trailers) but it listed a couple extras. Some of them weren't on all the movies of course

No no no no no no! Don't... even if they're "bad" movies for a cheap price that you don't care about, you're just encouraging these companies that do little more than slap public domain films (ever notice its the same film each time? thats why) with the worst transfers and no extras (often not even any chapter stops). If you really want it like that then I'm actually going to say just buy or dub a tape. Don't support these freaks.

(now watch in two years when I'm trying to get a movie company off the ground I have to resort to the same tactics to get a financial base before the good stuff)

How do some of those movies become "public domain"? Like Night Of The Living Dead.

I believe Night of the Living Dead is public domain because they messed up the copyright/licensing when they made it. As for the other films, either their copyrights weren't renewed, were never officially filed, or they're foreign films that have no official, legally contracted licensee in the U.S. I'm not totally sure, but I believe how it works is U.S. licenses/copyrights apply worldwide, even without re-registering in other countries, yet worldwide licenses/copyrights don't apply in U.S. until re-registered here. Thats how there are so many sites on the internet that sell VHS dubs of Euro-Horror.

NOTLD was originally called Night of the Flesh Eaters. After releasing the film under that title, they discovered that somebody already owned that name so they retitled it to Living Dead. When they insterted the new title screen they forgot to replace the copyright notice. It was on the original title screen, but not the new one. The lack of a copyright notice gave every theater owner in the country the leeway to grab the movie, make copies of it and never have to pay the filmmakers a dime.

I've bought two of those 10 packs. I got the Action Arsenal one and the Mafia movies pack. I like bad movies so they're pretty fun. Around half of the action movies were shot on video and looked like community access stuff. Those movies were awesome. Some of the discs have movie trivia games on them and some have Casper shorts. Haven't watched the Mafia ones yet but I've looked at them and they look pretty kick ass. Cheap as shit. A lot of these movies are so obscure that it's worth it. I saw where some people were talking about the transfers. Believe me, most of the movies on these things, it doesn't matter. They could spend a million dollars on cleaning these things up and they'll still look like crap. They're crappy movies. I WANT my crappy movies to look like crap. I didn't bother with the kung fu or the horror sets because out of those 20 movies there were only 2 I didn't already have. I'm currently trying to get the Women Who Kick BUTT, box set. It's got a Christie Love movie in it! Not to mention Sister Street Fighter. Plus it's a good investment. I buy a 10 pack of movies for 10 dollars, watch and tape them all, then resell it on Ebay for 15.
