Why are the masses trashing WM X8?

Guest The Man They Call Texas Blu

I understand, it looks like a less tham steller card, but oh well. I have high hopes for this show. On paper, this should be the biggest WM in the history of wrestling. The Rock vs. Hulk Hogan, honestly, who is not excited to see this. Even if most "smarks" trash it, deep down in your heart(meaning wrestling fans not puro heads) you are looking forward to this match.

Flair vs. Taker will be interesting to see as well. Look at it this way folks, UT and Flair are legends, despite your feelings about them meeting, and this is more than likely their last WM. I have a feeling Hall vs. Austin won't be as bad as people say. Also HHH vs. Y2J should be good. Too bad this didn't happen 2 or 3 years ago.

There will also be those matches that suck the big one ie, Regal vs. anyone, B&C/APA, and the women's title match(what ever it will be).

That still leaves RVD, Angle/Kane, DDP, The Dudleys, and The Hardyz, who can all have good matches and stay over with the crowd.

So don't knock it before you see it.

I am definitely not a puro-head, but I don't want to see Hogan/Rock.  There is no way that this Mania will be as big as Wrestlemania VI, let alone Wrestlemania III.

We are not knocking the show, rather we are criticizing the booking of the show and the poor buildup to Mania. And seriously, how can you blame someone for being critical of a show where the average age of three of the attractions, (hall-austin, rock-hogan, taker-flair) is well over 40 yrs old? In the words of Benoit, I want the WWF to "Prove me Wrong"

I think the PPV will be good based on "star power". The workrate won't be good, but I don't care for workrate. The build has been very poor.

If youve been a fan for a while you remeber the buildup that Wrestlemania used to get. Nobody expects the level of hype form the time when there was a handful of pay-per-views, but this is still the worst hype job ever. The WWF in general has been getting worse and worse when it comes to treating WM like just another ppv. If someone had told me around the time period of like WM6 that 10-12 years from now, they wont be talking about the whole finalized card or have those graphics running down each match, I would have thought you were crazy. We still have to sit ang guess what some of the card is going to be two weeks before! How can we get that excited, when the writing staff cant be bothered to care? Sure Rock-Hogan is getting hyped, but the title match? Other world title matches have had a better buildup this year. Rock and Austin's shots this year were built up better than jokes about HHH and Steph's genatalia. Jericho helped hurt HHH more by putting him in the Walls? So what, we have to watch for HHH to hurt himself again and maybe Jericho can take advanatge of his slip-up? HHH is in the ring hurling those insults but he cant be bothered to just friggin knock Jericho out? They had better have good stuff planned for the actual event, cause this buildup sucks.

As I said before, the the show would great 2 or 3 years ago. Also, being from Toronto, I hope the best for the show, I had to give an arm and a leg for my tickets.

God, it's me, Blu. Please don't make this show suck, please!

Two or 3 years ago, this WM does even bigger business. Since wrestling was hot, hot, hot.

I used to love that.  They should bring back the Wrestlemania Updates.  They can put them on the weekend shows.

When was the last time they actually did that.. ran down all the matches on an upcoming PPV.  And second question, why the hell don't they do it anymore?

They don't do it anymore because they have 12 ppv's a year and don't book ahead anymore.  Last year Benoit/Angle was thrown together 2 or 3 weeks before the show and this year there will be a few more like it.

You guys are right about the build up. It has stunk so far with the exception of Rock/Hogan. Again, this is the writer's fault. Austin/Hall just seems too comedic with toy guns and kidnapping stunts. RVD/Regal has no damn build up. Once again the wwf has gone back on ppv stips(from this month's ppv) by messing up with the APA/BillyandChuck tag title match. Not that I wanted to see it, but it showed the wwf doesn't know what the hell its doing. Could be the wwf doesn't have a grasp on what fans want to see either.

I have shows which build up to Manias in the past. I think part of the problem is that there is two 2 hour weekly shows. It's killing the hype. Back in the day they had superstars and other 1 hour outlets. It still doesn't excuse the fact that they don't do those updates like Mean Gene use to do(those things ruled). It doesn't excuse the fact the wrestlers don't do special interviews talking about their matches for Mania either. I watched one segment from 1987 with some wrestlers getting interviewed on who they thought would win between Hogan and Andre. It was tremondous with answers ranging from Hillbilly Jim to Butch Reed(who said Hulk I hope the Giant squashes you like a grape boy!).

Sudden match signings were given to the announcers "on the fly". Tunney would show up to announce matches on Main Event(Hogan/Slaughter). Stuff like that were true roads to Mania. As for the ppv imagine the card without the signings. The wwf would be stuck with something very stale in terms of new competition for the top guys. You would have either Rock/Austin*which wouldn't be bad* or Austin/Triple H with Rock probably facing Angle. Think about the rest of the card. At least now they got some "new faces" and as for star power this Mania is up there with the best of them.

I agree though if this was 2 or 3 years ago. DAMN!

Yes, I was a big fan of the 'Wrestlemania Report' and the snazzy graphics. And cards were booked differently then too.. Most of the time they would announce the match and then add the angle later. But now they just dont bother doing either. The matches that seem to have the most backstory are the ones that are added on HEAT just before the PPV.

I have become accustomed to poor hype for PPVs... But I always had faith in the run up to Wrestlemania. This year however, the build is sorely lacking and giving no incentive to the fan to purchase the PPV.  Sure there are some fantastic names on the card, but why are they fighting?

Do we know exactly why Hogan targetted Rock? or do we have a good reason for Hall singling out Austin? Sure these matches are hyped... But what were the motives of the nWo? and why did they target these people?

Ive seen no great hype for the WWF title match neither... It just seems like a stage for Steph and Trips to have an argument on. I dont care about HHH and Steph... but I really would like to care about HHH and Jericho, if the WWF gives me reason to.

The rest of the card is pretty much 'unconfirmed' apart from RVD vs Regal.. A Match that is pretty much a foregone conclusion anyways.

It aint to much to ask.  All I want the WWF to do is make me care about who Is on my TV...

And YES! I am willing to pay out the bucks for a PPV, just out of habit. But it would be nice for the WWF to actually give me the incentive me to do it.. rather than be a creature of habit.

A PPV just seems like another monthly bill now.. I am starting to begrudge paying it.

"They still did it as recently as 1995, and I believe 1996.  It was dropped by the beginning of the attitude era in 1997.

According to PW torch...it was supposed to be Regal vs. Edge AGAIN...but they backed out of it because the match at No Way Out was so godawful...According to them, they still plan on blowing off Edge vs, Regal eventually...but not until after they move on to other feuds.  I fear that RVD is jobbing.

I beleive that there isn't much buildup for the title match for 1 reason:  HHH isn't winning.

If he were...that's all you'd hear...Title match...8 months of hell...WrestleMania...

I am getting butterflies in my stomach just thinking about being at WM

i paid 215 bucks for two tickets, nothing could ruin this for me.

Besides, the only match that had lead up last year was Rock/Austin

and the whole PPV rocked

Hmm...it'd be better if they built it up ("it" being the main-event) as HHH CANNOT lose, then have Jericho beat him relatively cleanly (low-blows and foreign objects allowed, just no interference). But, this is the WWF, $PORTZ-ENTERTAINMENT~!, so expect a really cheap finish if either man wins.

The masses are criticizing WM 18 because on paper it looks horrible.  I might get excited about Rock versus Hogan if this had happened when Hogan was at his prime, not an over the hill gimp.  Flair versus Taker?  Who's going to carry this match?

Some of the matches look good.  but for the most part this ppv looks like any other ppv throughout the year.

This WM has had the misfortune of some terrible timing.  Rock isn't able to promote the show because of his movie.  Y2J (and Rock and Flair) won't even be in town this Raw because of the tour of Asia.  The signing of nWo was too late to have a decent buildup.

Some of the problem is also that the writers seem to have no idea what will happen after WM (re the split).

Run-down:

* Y2J v. HHH: decent build-up from the Rumble win, but could have been better.

* Rock v Hogan: great first dueling promos.  Downhill since the ambulance attack, with no Rock to respond to Hogan

* Austin v Hall: why?  Why didn't Austin pick on Hogan?  No reason given at all

* Flair v Taker: great buildup.  Taker is beating on people to try to get a match with Flair.  Great tension.  Quick question though: Why doesn't Taker just take out Flair, instead of asking for a match.  Only other problem with match is that, regardless of the buildup, Flair and Taker are both old and probably won't have a good match.

* Kane v Angle: should be a good match.  no build-up at all though.

* woman's match: who cares?

* tag match: Billy and Chuck are getting more and more heel heat.  But there is nothing set up at the moment, so it seems like this will be thrown together at Smackdown or Raw next week.  No build-up.

I believe they did the cool rundowns and graphics before No Mercy.
