MST3k on SF question

Does anybody know if the MST3K reruns are being cancelled on SciFi? I had just decided to start recording it so I look at the schedule and surprise, on the 19th or so....no more MST3K. Gone the week after that too. So is it gone for good or what?

Well, their contract with Sci-Fi runs out at the end of January and if it's not renewed, then yeah, MST3K is gone unless some other network picks it up.

The reruns are being pre-empted for about the next month. The Sci-Fi channel is showing a bunch of alien themed movies to promote a mini-series they're showing. The reruns will be back in December and the contract ends in January.

BTW, no other channel is going to pick up the reruns. No matter how much we would like it to happen.

I'd bet somebody does. Maybe SciFi decides to go ahead and renew it or it goes back to CC. I mean, this isn't really costing anything to make. It's easy programming. How much could it possibly cost to get reruns of it? 5 dollars a week?

It's not just the rights to the show. If a network wants to pick the show up, they'd have to buy the rights to the movies as well. It's not as easy as it sounds. Yeah, I know theyr'e B-movies, but it's still money.

Nevermind the poster above me already answered the question.

That's also why you will likely never see every episode on an official video or DVD.

But doesn't scifi already own the rights to those movies? That's why they used them in the first place. I mean they spend a lot of money on other bullshit that nobody watches at all.

Well, the rights on a lot of movies have expired, that's why you don't see episodes from the first few Sci-Fi seasons anymore. Plus, the cost of the rights tends to go up now that the movies are popular again.

I have all the episodes on tape anyway (save for 2 or 3) so I won't miss anything, but it would be nice if the show was renewed or went to TNN or something.
