Your top 10 cds of 2001/2002

Guest Youth N Asia

Bored, so here we go. And I'm already well prepared for the bashing my taste in music is gonna get. Since you guys are big on punk/emo/pop mix backlash. Not a bashing thread, just an opinion one.

10. "I Get Wet" by Andrew W.K....ok, I know this isn't classic music or anything, but the cd is so damn fun I can't help but love it.

9. "Stay What You Are" by Saves the Day...Good cd. Not much of a comment though.

8. "Full Colapse" by Thursday...emo-core, it's emo with hardcore music and delivery...very good cd.

7. "Tell All Your Friends" by Taking Back Sunday...yeah, it's emo. So what, excelent cd. Almost emo-core.

6. "10 Years And Running" by MXPX...pretty much a compilation package, but a very good one, and I can't help but mark out for "Punk Rawk Show" and "Move to Bremerton"

5. "Maladroit" by Weezer...pretty much a smark staple, don't need to go into great detail.

4. "Leaving Through the Window" by Something Corporate...I'll just duck to avoid your emo hate rocks. I really like the cd, great lyrics and music.

3. "Free All Angels" by Ash...Almost my #1 pick. Very good rock band, excelent cd. Solid from track 1 to track 14. Can't wait for their next cd.

2. "Leechuza" by Fenix TX...also could have been my #1 pick...a great mix of punk rock and heavy rock with some pop thrown in, pretty non emo. If this list was earlier this year it would have been my #1...too bad they broke up though

1. "Bleed American" by Jimmy Eat World...far and away my favorite cd of the last few years, top to bottom a modern masterpiece. Great rock band.

I don't think I can list ten, but I definitely think Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is the best album of the decade thus far.

1. M Ward -- "End Of Amnesia"

2. Wilco -- "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot"

3. Low -- "Things We Lost In The Fire"

4. Noah John -- "Had A Burning"

5. Jim White -- "No Such Place"

6. Sparklehorse -- "It's a Wonderful Life"

7. Richard Hawley -- "Late Night Final"

8. The Handsome Family -- "Twilight"

9. Queens Of The Stone Age -- "Songs For The Deaf"

10. Mark Lanegan -- "Field Songs"

Others........

The Heavy Blinkers -- "Better Weather"

Fugazi -- "The Argument"

Papa M -- "Whatever, Mortal"

I could have easily done a top 20 for 1999/2000 albums as those couple of years produced slightly more than the last couple have.

6. Sparklehorse -- "It's a Wonderful Life"

7. Richard Hawley -- "Late Night Final"

Yes, great albums.

I'd agree with Andrew WK, too.

And the new Idlewild, Bowie and Ed Harcourt albums were excellent. But its hard to come up with ten. I suppose I could put the Strokes in there too...

I'll see how many I can get:

1: Felix da Housecat: Kittenz and thee glitz

2: International DeeJay Gigolo: American Gigolo mix album

3: Air: 10'000 Hertz Legend

4: Felix da Housecat: Execursions (mix album)

5: Ladytron: Light and Magic ( Its actually not out yet, but from what I have heard already its amazing)

The problem with me is I really only buy older stuff because modern music is in dire shape, so apart from Electro music i'm not really up to date.

I don't feel particularly good about some of the albums on this list, but music listening has been on the wane this year and I'm pretty behind on some albums I probably should have heard. Some of these albums aren't so great but it's the best I can think of for 2002. With a couple of exceptions, these are actually the only albums I've heard so far this year.

Fugazi The Argument

Flaming Lips Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots

…Trail of the Dead Source Tags and Codes

Clinic Walking with Thee

Interpol Turn on the Bright Lights

Sparta Wiretap Scars

Eminem The Eminem Show

Here are some albums who I respect but I haven't heard these particularly albums, and are highly recommended. It's my understanding they should be on such a list.

Tom Waits Alice

Tom Waits Blood Money

Sonic Youth Murray Street

Wilco Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (I've heard that fell in love with the drummer song, but nothing off of the rest of the album, so I don't know.)

EDIT: I didn't notice that 2001 was included. So My list and subsequent comments are based on the year 2002 only.

Wilco Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (I've heard that fell in love with the drummer song, but nothing off of the rest of the album, so I don't know.)

The song in question is "Heavy Metal Drummer," which is probably a little underwhelming outside of the context of the album. It being such a blatant single and breaking up the flow of the album almost makes me want to deduct one-tenth of a point from my otherwise perfect score for Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Almost.

I tend to buy more older music than anything released recently; a fact that comes to light whenever I try to compile one of these lists. The only three 2002 albums I've purchased thus far and have enjoyed thoroughly are, in order of preference, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Source Tags and Codes, and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. I've got the Interpol album, too, but have yet to listen to it all the way through. From what I've heard, it could very well join the list. Not sure where.

i haven't even bought 10 new records since 2001, but the best one i've heard is 'lateralus', followed closely by 'open' by the cowboy junkies. 'vespertine' is damn good, and 'amnesiac is only slightly less good than that.

biggest disappointment, by far, was 'strange little girls'. motherhood has officially turned my goddess tori amos into a wuss. and what i've heard from 'scarlet's walk' is even worse.

I like "Heavy Metal Drummer" just fine. A friend of mine put it on a mix cd he made for my birthday. If the nearest record store ever lowers the price from $17.99 to a more reasonable cost, or if I have time to make it out to the cheaper record stores, I'll pick up the whole album without question.

I've been buying more older albums lately too, to fill blatant gaps in my collection.

I was tempted to put the yeah yeah yeah's ep and the latest Jets to Brazil on the list too, because I'm pretty sure they're the only other albums I've heard from this year so far, but I really don't think either one of them is very good.

Guest What?

Lessee...

5. Gary Moore: "Scars"-Not a great album, but still ok...a second listen made me see the error of my ways in a previous thread.

4. CKY: "Infiltrate, Destroy, Rebuild"-Pretty solid stuff. Not as good as "Volume 1" but still good.

3. Chris Cain: "Chris Cain"-Great Blues guitarist, and he sounds like an old black man, even though he's a middle aged Jewish guy...great stuff.

2. The Hives: "Veni, Vedi, Vicious"-Good album, not as good as "Barely Legal" but good nonetheless. Hell, maybe even great.

1. Rolling Stones: "Forty Licks"-Don't know if this counts or not...since it's just a compilation...so my other #1 is....

The Strokes: "Is this It"- Go ahead...flame me...I don't care...The Strokes kick ass...Word, mothafuggas

I'm not entirely sure if I've picked up 10 albums released over the last 2 years, but here are the ones I feel comfortable throwing into my "kick absolute ass" pile.

Tool - Lateralus. As good as if not better than Aenima.

Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Kinetic's covered this one, but man, it's super.

Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights. Absolute gold. A very unique sound and definitely one of the best records out this year.

The White Stripes - White Blood Cells. Gritty bluesy stompin' fun.

The Strokes - Is This It?. The UK version, with "New York City Cops" in place of "When It Started," is almost without a weak moment. Amidst all the hype and backlash, people forgot that this is a pretty fine rock album.

I've picked up a lot of reissues and a few hits collections (The Cars' Complete Greatest Hits? Hells yeah!), but those don't really count so much.

2002:

No albums have caught my eye at all this year except for the following two, and these are two of the greatest albums EVER, in my eyes...

2. Beyond The Embrace - Against The Elements

1. Shadows Fall - The Art Of Balance

10. Aimee Allen- I'd Start A Revolution (If I Could Wake Up In The Morining): Pretty awesome metal, actually. Decent lyrics and song structure. All in all, a fun CD.

9. American Hi-Fi- American Hi-Fi: Totally proved that they deserve more respect than that of other pop-punk bands.

8. Red Hot Chili Peppers- By The Way: A total departure from their regular sound that worked beautifully

7. Fozzy- Happenstance: This really should not have been good.

6. Ozzy Osbourne- Down To Earth: Ozzy is still the king of metal. Plus, he seems to be developing a Lennon-esque sound (like on Dreamer)

5. Saliva- Every Six Seconds: Would have been much better if the lyrics weren't so derivitave.

4. Disturbed- Believe: Miles better than The Sickness, and that was an awesome album.

3. Our Lady Peace- Spiritual Machines: First concept album in years to captivate me. The spoken word tracks were actually interesting, as well.

2. Nickelback- Silver Side Up: I was surprised at the growth Kreoger has shown since The State

1. Our Lady Peace- Gravity: Every track on this album is so powerful. Great music, profound lyrics. An incredible expansion on the new sound OLP developed on Spiritual Machines.

10. The Eminem Show-Eminem

9. Satellite-P.O.D.

8. Come Clean-Puddle Of Mudd

7. Weathered-Creed

6. The Fallout-Default

5. Every Six Seconds-Saliva

4. Sinner-Drowning Pool

3. Hybrid Theory-Linkin Park

2. Lonely Position Of Neutral-Trust Company

1. 12 Stones-12 Stones

I'm also going to add Saliva's new cd "Back Into Your System" since judging from the tracks I've listened to thus far, it sounds like it should be a good cd.

Or, it shows that WWE may be correct on what they believe the taste of their audience is (at least partially).

Although, 12 Stones as the year's top albums is kind of suspicious... :)

I have to agree with The Strokes, Tool and AWF'NK. Other than that,

Black Letter Days by Frank Black and the Catholics

Behind the Music by The Soundtrack Of Our Lives

Group Sounds by RFTC (maybe earlier?)

Hot Charity + Cut Carefully & Play Loud also by the glorious RFTC

Humpty Dumpty LSD by the butthole surfers

XX by Mushroomhead

i think that's it really, though i mean to get

Irony is a dead scene EP by DEP and Mike Patton, the new melvins one and i may try Tomahawk. And the NOFX b sides. Shit, there's more than i thought.

No one liked Springsteen and the E-Street Band? Really sad album but also very meaningful and still had some of the energy in it despite the topic, and a lot of diverse content relating it.

I have heard such good things about that album, but only heard the single (Cut Your Ribbon). How is it?
