Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted October 30, 2002 I always felt Soccer, Hockey were the worst sports overall because unless you can get a good game going...it sucks to play it...and It never is fun to watch... Never fun to watch?! Are you insane? Football and Baseball games are not fun to watch (The NFL that is, CFL is 100x better). Hockey is not fun to play if you can't skate. Soccer (or football) is more of enduring and physical sport than anything else (except Rugby).
Guest Jack Tunney Report post Posted October 30, 2002 Soccer is low scoring because that's just how it is.(even though when really shitty tems play good teams the score can be 22-0)It's just set up differently than other sports. And it's alot more exciting than Baseball. There arent 800 beer commercials. Here's some famous Soccer scores though. My memory is fuzzy so the countries may be wrong. Guest alkeiper Report post Posted October 30, 2002 its the reason why I'm a Baseball Hater, $938,493,850,924,354.71 to A-Rod when the Ranger should of went after pitcher. Like Chan Ho Park? then there is the mysterious reason of season games being played on weekdays in mid afternoon when nearly everyone is at work or school. Usually its either..... a. Businesspersons' Special b. Last day of a series and scheduled that way to make taveling easier. I'm 19, and prefer baseball to football, so I don't buy the 'baseball is for old people who don't change with the times' argument, especially considering a lot of the people who said that the last strike killed their interest in baseball are older people (50+). Ditto. I'm 20 and I love baseball. Soccer and Hockey never get the major push that the other sports get. In general people only care about soccer when the World Cup is on and Hockey when the local team is winning. The difference between Soccer and other sports in this country is the level of competition. MLB, NFL, and the NBA feature the best players in the world. Only a handful of soccer's best play MLS. Personally, I'll take baseball. A few points in its favor...... 1. They play 10 times as many games, and still draw viable crowds to most of their games. Could football hold people's interest that long? And how might baseball fare with a football-ese schedule? 2. Minor League Baseball. The AAA Red Barons play just 30 miles from my home. For $7.50, I can go watch a game from about 7 rows back. Terrific atmosphere, low prices, player accesibility, that's the essence of baseball. 3. Football plays 85% of its games on Sunday afternoon. I work Sundays. How the hell am I supposed to follow a sport I can't watch? I've made my points before, but I just think baseball has a deeper history, and is more ingrained in our hearts. Guest Jack Tunney Report post Posted October 30, 2002 I've always thought that Basketball was the most popular sport in the United States.
Guest Sassquatch Report post Posted October 30, 2002 I'm torn. I am a Dodger fan till the end and have been a fan of theirs since I can remember. But I am also a huge fan of football as well what with my devotion to the Oakland Raiders and the Green Bay Packers. *flips a coin* *lands on heads* Football it is. Guest Rabbi_wilson13 Report post Posted October 30, 2002 I love to watch baseball... ...until NFL starts, at which point I could really care less. The postseason was just kinda there for me, with two teams who got about NO national coverage during the year, then all of a sudden are playing in a world series where the great pitching that makes games close, exciting and not seven-hours long was surprisingly absent. NFL may very well be the new national past time. I heard it put very eloquently comparing the two sports, "Football takes care of its problems off the field, which makes the game look better, even if it's not." The fact that you don't have to hear football players complaining about money every so many years is one big plus in there column. BPS, I'd have to disagree with you on the whole forgetting the strike thing. It almost destroyed the sport after Ripken, Sosa and McGwire worked so hard in the 90's to bring some decency back to it. They still didn't really resolve the problem, and next year it could flare back up again. Hockey is fun in the postseason, and there's nothing like being at a hockey playoff game, but their regular season gets a tad boring. Soccer is going to become the same thing as bobsledding, figure-skating and sprinting - Popular every four years. My favorite sport to watch, and it may be above the NFL, is college basketball. It's just pure, and you can find a team that plays a style you like (Physical, finesse, shooters, runners, defensive, freestyle) and those rivalry games are some of the best. So my vote goes to football, because if you're looking at ratings, how the leagues are run or just how a general sports fan cares about it, football is winning on all fronts. Guest razazteca Report post Posted October 30, 2002 3. Football plays 85% of its games on Sunday afternoon. I work Sundays. How the hell am I supposed to follow a sport I can't watch? Monday Night Football on ABC at the same time as Raw, has some of the best games each week. 2. Minor League Baseball. The AAA Red Barons play just 30 miles from my home. For $7.50, I can go watch a game from about 7 rows back. Terrific atmosphere, low prices, player accesibility, that's the essence of baseball. that's great just stay away from MLB, I have to go 150 miles to see any major sporting event, the last time I left town for a game it was to see the Spurs. 1. They play 10 times as many games, and still draw viable crowds to most of their games. Could football hold people's interest that long? And how might baseball fare with a football-ese schedule? NFL football could never have a long season for injury reasons. Baseball would be more entertaining to me if they did go to a shorter season maybe like the NBA. Only a handful of soccer's best play MLS. its not on tv as much nor is it advertised as much as the other sports. With little to no media given to the league or the sport its hard to get an audience outside of diehards who watch Univision, its a shame. MLS needs ESPN and Fox Sports to shrill its product but gets ignored.
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted October 30, 2002 Only a handful of soccer's best play MLS. Soccer's best? Play in America??? Um? Where's Beckham, Keane, Seaman, Kahn, Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Carlos, Nakata, De Boer they are not in America, they're over in Europe, where almost any soccer player wants to play, if its in England, Italy, Germany, Spain, France, etc... People who play soccer in the USA can't compete against teams like Man. United, FC Barcelona, Bayren Munich, Lazio. Basically state side soccer is for people who aren't good enough to play in Europe, sorta like farm teams...

Soccer (or football) is more of enduring and physical sport than anything else (except Rugby). American Football is actually really fun to watch. Very strategic and intriguing stuff. Different than the Canadian game, but not in a bad way at all. They're both fun to watch. Of course, it also depends on the calibur of teams playing. Watching two shitty teams play, no matter what the sport, is generally not cool. Baseball is insanely boring compared to Hockey. I don't see how the average, run of the mill MLB game could be more exciting than hockey. Baseball is way slower, way longer. The only time you're on the edge of your seat is closer to the final innings, or on a 3-2 count maybe. There are bad hockey games that are not exciting at all, and good baseball games that are very exciting, but IMO on the whole Hockey is regularly a lot better. End to end rushes, wide open play...that's good hockey, and can happen anytime two decent teams face off. I can see where baseball fans are coming from though...generally, when you're loyal to something you enjoy it a lot more. Or when your team is winning. But hockey = never fun to watch? Not true at all. As for soccer, it's a blast to play and the World Cup is definately fun to watch. Hell, the Women's World Cup is probably going to be really fun to watch next year (anyone else get addicted to the under-19 in Edmonton this year?). So, if you're not into Soccer, you might want to check out the WWC...the US is a powerhouse, so you Americans will have someone good to cheer on, which always helps. Guest alkeiper Report post Posted October 31, 2002 Redbaron, I was pointing out how most of the best DON'T play in America. The only worthwhile guys I can think of are Clint Matthus and Landon Donovan.
Guest jimmy no nose Report post Posted October 31, 2002 I like baseball as a game, but don't like MLB as a league and minor league baseball is pretty hard to find on TV and what not, so I find myself watching much more football than baseball. I do like to catch a lot of MLB games though.
Guest converge241 Report post Posted November 1, 2002 Football , to me, officially took over baseball this year. Unofficially since the strike.. Im basing it off of friends and family members who arent "sports people" and used to be casually into baseball and now switched over and the TV ratings
