Guest DrTom Report post Posted October 28, 2002 Baseball has been called the national pastime for ages now, but the NFL has encroached on its popularity a lot in recent years. Many people now prefer football to baseball. So which one would YOU consider to be the national pastime? Edit: college, high school, and recreational sports certainly factor into this, too. I didn't want to seem like I was biasing it toward the pro leagues only.
Guest DragonflyKid Report post Posted October 28, 2002 Since I can't get into the hype of sports anymore I have to go based solely on the entertainment value which I give the edge to Football. After all the strike talk BS from MLB players I give the nod to the NFL a 2nd time. EDIT: I also prefer College football over Minor league baseball.
Guest Kotzenjunge Report post Posted October 28, 2002 I voted for football, I just want to commend RollingChop on his new avatar. Fo sheez, Kotzenjunge
Guest DragonflyKid Report post Posted October 28, 2002 The second I saw that avatar I knew it had to be mine. I knew after the bad blood between the two teams the last few years it would come to fighting, I just didn't expect it to come in the preseason.
Guest razazteca Report post Posted October 28, 2002 in my opinion its: Football - NFL #1 sport Basketball - Jordan and Shaq rule the world Baseball - best way to get a green card into the USA Hockey - something for the Canadian to call their own Nascar - rednecks need something to do on the weekend Soccer - if all women are soccer moms then why is'nt MLS popular? Lucha Libre - the cartoons are brainwashing the youth, so in 5 years this will overtake all as La Parka as the Chairman will rule with a steel chair Curling - the bizarre Canadian obsession
Guest cartman Report post Posted October 28, 2002 Here's my opinion: Baseball is, and will always be the national Pastime. It's been around since the 1800's and has always been the #1 sport in america...Until now. Therefore the NFL is the National NOWtime. If that makes any sense. In other words, baseball is a pastime for it's history, not the popularity it has now. Football has the #1 popularity spot now...and probably will for the future. Guest LaParkaMarka Report post Posted October 29, 2002 I think I agree with what cartman2092 said: baseball will always have it's place, and it'll be regarded as "America's Sport" or whatever for a longtime, but I think football way exceeds it in popularity. Of course, I still voted La Parka. There needs to be an expansion sports team called the Skeletons, with him as tha mascot. It's money in the bank, I tells ya. Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted October 29, 2002 I agree with cartman also. To me the difference is that I like the game of baseball better than the game of football. I can watch any two teams play baseball. Hell I can watch little league teams play basball... but I have a hard time watching Carolina and Tampa Bay play football. Guest razazteca Report post Posted October 29, 2002 I find it hard to like MLB when every 5 years or so the league and players union bluff a strike and argue over money. Baseball is an old sport, which as a history, and it is living on the past glories of its heroes inshrined in film and popular lore. The present state of the game to me is nothing but a bunch of political BS as Baseball is excempt from Molopy laws, and the constant arguements over which team to "contract" due to extreme salaries given to players on losing teams. The only baseball that I will watch is the little league or maybe minor league but I cannot stand MLB.

It's sort of like Canada, where lacrosse is the national *Sport*, while hockey is the national *pastime*. And then there's curling, which has this mysterious ability to make you watch it, despite the fact that it's almost as slow as baseball...
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted October 29, 2002 I don't want to hear this strike BS anymore. They didn't go on strike. So let's try dropping that sometime in this lifetime.
Guest Kinetic Report post Posted October 29, 2002 The major advantage football has over baseball is that it's exciting throughout the season, while baseball is only exciting for about two months every year. The entire season preceding that is dull as fuck, in my opinion. That's attributable to less games, basically. Modern American audiences don't want to sit through a four hour borefest. They want 2 1/2 to 3 hours of people beating the fuck out of each other and scoring a lot of points. That's in football's favor. And, really, football has been around long enough to develop a history nearly as rich as that of baseball, so that whole "national pastime" thing is sort of a nonfactor. Football has baseball beaten in all phases and as a result is the new national pastime. Without a doubt.
Guest razazteca Report post Posted October 29, 2002 its the reason why I'm a Baseball Hater, $938,493,850,924,354.71 to A-Rod when the Ranger should of went after pitcher. then there is the mysterious reason of season games being played on weekdays in mid afternoon when nearly everyone is at work or school. and the San Diego Chicken and Rally Monkey mascots just weird me out.
Guest Kinetic Report post Posted October 29, 2002 The Rally Monkey is a fantastic marketing tool for the Angels. Not being a baseball fan, it was one of two things that I knew about the World Series going in. I took to referring to it as Rally Monkey vs. Team Bonds. Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted October 29, 2002 Baseball will always be the National Pastime. Football is America's Favorite Sport.
Guest Brian Report post Posted October 29, 2002 That's because the Rangers kept on outbidding themselves. It's their fault. Anyways, Baseball will always be America's National Pastime, no matter football's popularity, because this country grew up with baseball.
Guest Spaceman Spiff Report post Posted October 29, 2002 And then there's curling, which has this mysterious ability to make you watch it, despite the fact that it's almost as slow as baseball... Tell me about it. During the Olympics, whenever Curling was on, I couldn't change the channel. Funny little Curling story: back in college, one of my friends had a picture taped to his dorm room door of an older couple at a Curling match. The guy had a hat that said "It's the Skip's fault", and the woman had a hat that said "Like hell it is". That became a running joke for that semester or 2, and pops up every now & then today. Anyway, I voted for baseball, my 1st sports "love". EDIT: heh, Curling humor. Probably went over the heads of 99% of the board
Guest Choken One Report post Posted October 29, 2002 America will always bleed Baseball...Yes, our modern messiahs are fallen and dethroned by the More popular sport of Football...but regardless...We hold Baseball dear to our nostalgic hearts. We can all recall picking up that wood holding it just slightly off our shoulders...looking at the pitcher...seeing our fathers on the side of the field...we would breathe heavy and swing hard and feel that quick jolt reverberate through our hands as we rushed to the bag in hopes for the call "SAFE!"... Football never did produce any haunting emotions the way Baseball would...Staring down the line...tight in trenches never had that emotional feel. Yes, a hard sack was always nice but it pales in comparison to the beauty of a Sac bunt. Baseball will never fall to Football.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted October 29, 2002 La Parka is beating baseball...that's truly great stuff there.
Guest Smark Hammill Report post Posted October 29, 2002 I like both sports, but baseball has the same problem that NBA and NHL have, but to a lesser degree. Regular season is too long. Not every game (or in baseball's case, every series) is meaningful.
Guest razazteca Report post Posted October 29, 2002 Football never did produce any haunting emotions the way Baseball would...Staring down the line...tight in trenches never had that emotional feel. Yes, a hard sack was always nice but it pales in comparison to the beauty of a Sac bunt. Football is an emotional sport, as games can be won or lost by the Special Teams, as in the case in the biggest game of year the Superbowlwhen the Buffalo Bills field goal kicker lost the game, or the Music City Miracle of the kickoff return for the game winning TD or The Catch of Joe Montana to Clark. Emmit Smith cried when he broke the rushing record this Sunday. The media favorite coach Jim Mora has gone on emotional tirades about how the team loses games. The Baseball World Series has had the lowest ratings in along time this year. It looks like the diehard fans are staying with it but the audience is most likely an older demographic than they would like. The younger demographic such as persons born in the 70s and 80s grew up on NFL with the 49ers, Cowboys, Packers as big draws. This same group has also seen the greatness that is Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird in the NBA. The quick pace games are a perfect fit for the short attention span generation. Baseball is an boring old sport for old people who do not change with the times and dislike progress. And the strike stuff just killed my interest along with the large salaries which is hurting the sport in the small markets. Baseball is holding down the greatness of the midcard sports of NFL and NBA. And the lowcard sports of Hockey and Soccer.
Guest treble charged Report post Posted October 29, 2002 I'm 19, and prefer baseball to football, so I don't buy the 'baseball is for old people who don't change with the times' argument, especially considering a lot of the people who said that the last strike killed their interest in baseball are older people (50+). The NFL may be more popular than Major League Baseball right now, but the GAME baseball will always be more popular than football in the United States. Even thought I'm not American, so I don't know if this technically applies to me, I'm kind of like bps on this situation. I'm more interested in a Little League World Series game than I am in a game between the Bengals and the Panthers (or 2 other teams that are going nowhere). Something about the strategy that's involved in baseball is what interests me, which is partly the reason that I can sit down and watch curling for hours straight. Guest Choken One Report post Posted October 29, 2002 I never said Football wasnt a emotional game...I said it brought emotions for me as a player. Nor did Basketball. I played Basketball for a hobby during the Winter... i played Football because I was too good not too... I played Baseball because I loved the game...Loved the intelligence...Love the chance and loved the thrill of a Double play.
Guest razazteca Report post Posted October 29, 2002 Baseball is fun to play but boring to watch
Guest Choken One Report post Posted October 30, 2002 I always felt Soccer, Hockey were the worst sports overall because unless you can get a good game going...it sucks to play it...and It never is fun to watch...
Guest razazteca Report post Posted October 30, 2002 Soccer and Hockey never get the major push that the other sports get. In general people only care about soccer when the World Cup is on and Hockey when the local team is winning. Hockey could become bigger, now that minor league teams are everywhere. Soccer just gets no respect in USA, I don't understand why, probably cause its more of a defensive game than what everyone expects, and the low scores. Guest Brian Report post Posted October 30, 2002 I personally love hockey. There's a certain strategy to it like soccer, but it's more physical and seems more active, and that's what makes the difference.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted October 30, 2002 It seems most kids play soccer from 5-10 but move onto real sports like Football and Baseball.

That's pretty much it. It's like watching the Bret/Shawn Iron Man match. Nothing happens. I went with Football. I love playing baseball, but can't for the life of me sit down and watch.
