RAW notes: HBK returns, ‘The Cat’ competes, Saggs & Probert visit

by Phil Speer

DETROIT – Oct. 28, 2002 – Shawn Michaels got a call on Thursday telling him to fly here for tonight’s RAW. The fans in the Joe Louis Arena couldn’t have been happier about it.

The Heartbreak Kid received a deafening ovation when he made his surprise appearance tonight, the first in-person appearance on the show since before August’s SummerSlam. Although Michaels says he only has one more match left in him, he adds that the adrenaline from the crowd’s response to him never gets old.

“I’m sure at one time when I took it for granted it might have,” he said, “but it certainly doesn’t now.”

Asked whether he was going to miss the thrill of a live audience when he does retire, he joked, “It’s hard for me to think about missing it because just when I think it’s gone, they bring me back. It’s like the mob.”

Michaels said his back is doing OK, and he’s not sure if his match with Triple H at SummerSlam caused further damage because he “didn’t even check.”

“I just go on with faith that whenever I need it, it’s going to be with me,” he said of his back.

Michaels said he doesn’t know for sure, but he assumes he’ll be on RAW again next week.

Ernest Miller back in action

Longtime WCW competitor Ernest “The Cat” Miller wrestled in a non-televised (“dark”) match tonight before RAW got underway.“

(Agent) Johnny Ace called and thought it’d be a good idea to come down and see how I fit in,” Miller told WWE.com, adding that he’s also scheduled to wrestle in a dark match at the SmackDown! taping tomorrow in Grand Rapids, Mich.

A three-time world karate champion and a member of the Blackbelt Hall of Fame, Miller competed in his first match tonight since before WCW was purchased by WWE in March 2001.

In the meantime, Miller has opened karate schools –Ernest Miller All-Pro Karate – in both Los Angeles and his hometown of Atlanta.

Miller said it was great to be backstage and see old friends. His friends were equally happy to see him.

Said the Hurricane, “One of the people I miss most from WCW is Ernest Miller.”

Two legends attend RAW

Jerry Saggs, a member of the Nasty Boys, who competed for several years in WWE, was spotted backstage at RAW today.

Saggs said he flew to Detroit today to visit his childhood friend Matt Millen, who today is the general manager of the NFL’s Detroit Lions. When he found out WWE was in town, he figured he’d “kill two birds with one stone” and come see some old friends.

Saggs still competes full time. He recently returned from Puerto Rico, where he tours once or twice a month with his partner, Brian Knobbs. These days, the mullet is gone. His hair is spiked on top, and cropped closely around the sides, like Lance Storm.

It seemed that Saggs had a story about every Superstar who walked by during an interview with WWE.com. He waxed nostalgic for the days that he and Shawn Michaels broke into the business in AWA. He said he once lived in the same Nashville, Tenn., apartment complex as The Rock’s family, and The Rock (who he calls “Dewey”) would come and hang out with them.

When Triple H first broke into the business, in WCW, he used to ride from town to town with the Nasty Boys, Saggs said.

“He used to be our driver,” Saggs said, “because he wouldn’t drink or anything like that.”

Another luminary in attendance tonight was Chicago Blawkhawks great Bob Probert, who said he flew in from the Windy City to hang out with his good friend Ric Flair. But Flair was given the week off.

Still, Probert, formerly of the Detroit Red Wings, took a seat at ringside with three of his buddies. He also attended Vengeance here in July.

It's Rhyno

DETROIT – Oct. 28, 2002 – Still a few months away from being able to return to World Wrestling Entertainment, Rhyno stopped by RAW tonight to hang out with his Superstar peers.

The former Hardcore Champion had fusion surgery last Nov. 2 to repair a herniated disc between his C6 and C7 vertebrae, requiring at least one year of recovery time. His physician, Dr. Lloyd Youngblood, has told him he’ll be ready to return to the ring in December or January.

Rhyno does have clearance to step in a wrestling ring in a limited capacity. At the end of last month, he drove from his home here just across the Canadian border into Windsor, Ontario, the city where he broke into the business. He spent three weeks there, walking around in the ring and exercising lightly, but didn’t take any impact (any “bumps”). Last week, he went to Ohio Valley Wrestling, the Louisville, Ky.-based WWE training camp, and increased his in-ring-training regimen.

“That’s where I took my first bump,” he said. “I took one the first day and two the second day.”

Rhyno said he’ll return to Youngblood’s office in mid-November.

“I want to see where I’m at,” he said. “I want to see what I can do.”

He hopes to be cleared to do additional ring activities, and then to return to OVW.

When he come back to WWE, he intends to be better than ever. With that in mind, he’s been working out as vigorously as possible.

“As far as the weights, I can’t go as heavy as I want,” he said. “But I’m slowly getting up there.”

He also recently completed an eight-week improvisation class with Second City Detroit, hoping to improve on his interview and acting skills.

“I want to take more classes when I get back on the road,” he said, adding that acting is like wrestling in that “it takes years of practice, and even when you’re on the road, you’re still practicing.”

Rhyno came to the WWE non-televised event yesterday in Toledo, Ohio, and he says he’ll probably go to the SmackDown! taping tomorrow in Grand Rapids, Mich. Rhyno has good friends on both RAW and SmackDown! – especially Edge and Christian. He said he doesn’t have a preference as to which brand he ends up on when he returns.

Actually, I find both shows entertaining,” he said.

Either way, Rhyno said he fully intends to be back by January’s Royal Rumble.

“If I’m not back by Royal Rumble, I’m going to pick up a broom and start sweeping floors here,” he said. “I’ve got to get out of the house. It’s not that I have a bad home life, it’s just that I’m tired of being there."

“I’m ready to come back and start mixing it up – getting in that ring and doing a little grappling.”

You know something, I think they SHOULD hold off Rhyno's return until the Royal Rumble.

That way, he can be a surprise entrant. Something that was sorely missing from this years Royal Rumble.

Calling what they did "wrestling" is being very generous.

The only good thing that came from that was Rhyno possibly returning by the Royal Rumble. I wonder if he'll ever win the World Title anytime at all?

Maybe that's just a rumor like a Von Erich becoming the Ultimate Warrior or there being more than 2 people that played the Undertaker (I say 2 because of the whole fake Undertaker storyline from summer of 94)

Who cares? This is only one their website writers...he's not purposely feeding you lies about where the Cat's wrestling career since WCW ended. I doubt he knew. What does the WWF have to gain by not mentioning WWA? Yeah, they're some real stiff competition...

You can see the difference in Rhyno's interviews too.

Huh? You mean since his injury? He's only been Raw once for about ten seconds. Unless I'm not getting your meaning.

I really don't see Rhyno as an Actor...methinks he plans on a B movie career after wwe.

I think Rhyno's just taking the classes to improve on his mic skills and characterization. Right now, his onscreen persona is all snarls and grunts. This might be a sign that he's getting a big push when he's fully healed.

He might be getting a push thanks Heyman but me likes the grunts and snarls...At least he has a purpose for doing that as opposes to Brock.

I would kinda like to see Rhyno come to Smackdown.

Not because it's a better show, but because I see Heyman bringing in Rhyno to take out Lesnar after they break apart.

It's an entirely likely propostiion...If they are broken up by Rumble...I can see Brock dominating the rumble and getting blindsided by Rhyno with the GORE GORE GORE with a laughing Heyman by his side...

Legend is just another word America uses for washed up superstars of the past (Hogan, Savage etc.) but Sags was nothing more then a One time transitional WWF tag champion and a WCW Tag team JTTS turned Hardcore flunky turned road agent AKA Retired Wrestler who can't leave the life.

I don't know why the WWE and even Rhyno himself think his mic skills need work. His promos is ECW were intense as hell and it took maybe two or three of them for me to declare him one of the best promo guys in the business.

And Brock has gotten pretty good on the mic, if you ask me. Sure, he hasn't really had a chance to do to much, but he seems really comfortable. His mannerisms after he found out Taker's hand was broken, right before Steph announced the Hell in the Cell, were great.
