Building STORYLINES

Guest My Eyebrow is on fire

The general consensus of the IWC is that if you just have traditional matches with clean finishes, the ratings will go up and the WWE will heal itself. I think Smackdown is great TV for this reason that it features a PPV calibre match every show but I do not think it is the answer. Here's why

1) Problem: Revolving door feuds - intensity builds over long feuds. This intensity adds to the match and builds anticipation. Crowd reaction is also increased. When 2 wrestlers hate eachother - or are fighting over something meaningful (A BELT MAYBE??!?!) it adds to the atmosphere, an intangible ambience. How are 2 wrestlers going to build hate for eachother with 3 encounters over a month's time? Face says you are an assclown, heel beats down face, face no sells and says you are an ass clown. Heel cheats to win at PPV, face wins following night to get his win back and blows off feud.

No buildup to the match, it's over as soon as it started? Dud match, no harm done right? Wrong - Because there are only so many wrestlers on the WWE respective rosters - it will be only a few more months before these two must meet again by default. The matchup will be on the road to getting STALE (perfect example Steve Austin v.s. UT, done to death, but Austin went around the WWE and it was UT's turn again).

Solution: Make each feud last a 2 months at least. I was happy to see Brock v.s. UT extended for another month when it first happened unlike most ppl on the net (tho I can't blame them for the DQ finish). Look at Bret Hart v.s. Steve Austin - did that feud EVER end? Even after a supposed blowoff ME - with a clean finish (bret cleanly eliminated austin from the 4 way for the title) the feud continued, and austin didn't lose heat either.

2) Problem: Giving away matches on free tv. i know smarks enjoy it, and I do too, but why buy a PPV with Eddie v.s. Edge in a rematch if you just saw it free with a clean finish on tv? Look, I realize you may love the workrate, but the match will become stale in the eyes of a paying customer.

Solution: Bring back jobbers. It allows people to see the stars they want to see, hit all their signature moves. It allows the stars to go over and build, it allows feuds to build. And, I hate to say it but DQ finishes on free TV. Austin v.s Bret Hart had Austin running in to DQ Bret or vice versa like 10093 times.

3) Problem: Storylines aren't interesting whatsoever. Scott Keith is fond of saying the best storyline is "Backstory: They HATE eachother" - I think an overly soap-operaish storyline can be gay, but I think a straight forward storyline can be just as bad.

Good storyline - Rock and Jericho had miscommunication. Miscommunication then EVOLVED INTO JEALOUSY - I loved it, week to week it was something new in the jericho/rock saga, culminating in a turn at survivor series. It was well written - and was PLANNED IN ADVANCE, no hot shot booking.

Bad storyline - Angle and Benoit don't like eachother therefore their match was just arranged so they could get it out.

Solution: I dunno

i gotta go home from work so

I agree wholeheartedly about the extended feud deal.

The only problem with this is that it will cause many of the same matches, because unlike years ago, we have a PPV every month now.

However, I believe if they ever went back to just the Big Five of PPVs, we could easily have long term feuds.

I agree with extended feuds...Austin/Mcmahon is a classic example of that.

And if they bring back job matches and give 2nd rate stuff away on tv the fans will stop watching, simple as that....Nitro forced them to put better matches on.

And I think a ppv every OTHER month would be a good idea...the ppvs are too costly as it is, and when you're putting shit like Big Show/Brock together you know you're really stretching...

As for having good matches on tv.....what exactly is wrong with this? Having the good match on tv is nothing more than just a commercial for the PPV. If Benoit & Angle can have a good match on Smackdown in 7 minutes, then a PPV match with them going 20 minutes has to be better right?

Jobbers is a thing of the past and thats it, I never want to see a glorified jobber match with Barry Hortiweitz & Italian Stallion vs Justin Credible & Steven Richards. Jobber squash matches does not equal ratings.

I have to agree with ChrisWaters, there are just to many PPVs for any storyline to make me care about a PPV. One month is not enough for an angle to form. Just look at this crap on Raw, as bad as the Katy Fvick story was it was rushed one week before the PPV. The Casket match could of been the end of the worthless angle at the PPV but was pushed to hell on Raw, because Jackass the Movie made alot of $ at the box office.

just remember workrate = profit

On the PPV side of things, It's best to keep the monthly format but alternate between the brands. This will keep the cash flowing in (unlike cutting PPVs entirely), give an extra month for each show to build up compelling storylines, and give the split some credibility.

If you do this then who gets what?

Im thinking The BIG 5 are interpromotional

with

NWO-RAW

BACKLASH-SD

JD-RAW

VENGENCE-SD

unforgiven-raw

NM-SD

Armageddon-raw

that gives Raw a extra show...but im guessing SMdown takes over 4 ppv aspect for the next year...unless they add a Interpromotional or drop one.

If this split promotion PPV concept happens then Raw should rename its PPV after the big WCW PPVs.

Starrcade

Great American Bash

Halloween Havoc

The problem right now is that (on RAW specifically) there are only bad feuds. All extending the feud would do is make it a long, bad feud.

They need to sort out problem A first, but yes, I do like longer feuds when they are done right.
