Guest papacita Report post Posted October 31, 2002 NEW YORK (AP) - Jam Master Jay, part of the pioneering rap trio Run DMC, was shot and killed Wednesday at a recording studio in Queens, a law enforcement source told The Associated Press. The shooting happened on Merrick Boulevard in the Jamaica section of Queens, said the source, who requested anonymity. Television reports said Run DMC fans were already gathering at the scene, some hugging each other and crying. The 37-year-old rapper's real name was Jason Mizell. The law enforcement source said the rapper was shot in the head about 7:30 p.m. and a second person was shot in the ankle and rushed to a nearby hospital. The source said the shooter was at large. Run DMC is widely credited with helping bring hip-hop into music's mainstream, including the group's smash collaboration with Aerosmith on the 1980s standard "Walk This Way." "We always knew rap was for everyone," Mizell said in a 2001 interview with MTV. "Anyone could rap over all kinds of music." "It wasn't the soulful R&B of the '70s and '80s," he said of the group's early work. "So we didn't want to be like the soft R&B. We wanted to go hardcore, so we put the rock-and-roll on our rap." The trio released a greatest-hits album earlier this year. In 2001, the rappers produced Crown Royal, breaking an eight-year silence. In 1986, the trio said they were outraged by the rise of fatal gang violence in that Los Angeles area. They called for a day of peace between warring street gangs. "This is the first town where you feel the gangs from the minute you step into town to the time you leave," Mizell said at the time.

Guest ant_7000 Report post Posted October 31, 2002 I wasn't a big fan of Run DMC. When You think of the beginning of Hip Hop you always think of Run DMC as one of the pioneers that started. This is sad thou RIP Jam Master Jay.

Guest treble charged Report post Posted October 31, 2002 Slowly, but surely, artists who performed HHH entrance themes are being killed off. In all seriousness, though, this is rather sad, especially for so one who is relatively young, like he was. RIP JMJ

Guest DARRYLXWF Report post Posted October 31, 2002 Slowly, but surely, artists who performed HHH entrance themes are being killed off. That was beyond unfunny. RIP. I liked it, but that doesn't mean I'm being disrespectful. RIP JMJ
Guest Human Fly Report post Posted October 31, 2002 He was part of a group that were true music legends. He'll be missed. Has anyone heard what motivation there was for the shooting? I was wondering if it was just random or if there was some purpose behind it.
Guest Sassquatch Report post Posted October 31, 2002 I respected Run for what they brought to the table when they helped get rap noticed and later on help it earn it's own status as a lasting music genre. I was also a casual fan of Run DMC's and this is terrible news to hear. My condolences go out to his family and friends. RIP Jason "Jam Master Jay" Mizell
Guest NazMistry Report post Posted October 31, 2002 I saw Run DMC just over a year ago and they rocked the Reading crowd like no one else all weekend. He was truly a godfather of Rap. RIP Jam Master Jay.
Guest FeArHaVoC Report post Posted October 31, 2002 That really sucks. I'm still a huge Aerosmith Fan so Run DMC always had a soft spot in my heart. RIP JMJ
Guest bravesfan Report post Posted October 31, 2002 Damn. Hopefully, in spite of this, Simmons (Run) and McDonald (DMC) can go on and produce many future hits in JMJ's memory. "The Undisputed Rap Icons of the 80's", bringing it into the forefront like no other group or artist before it...Jam Master Jay, you will be missed.
Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted October 31, 2002 WTF? Why would anyone want to shoot Jam Master Jay? What possible reason, what possible motivation? R.I.P. Jam Master Jay
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted October 31, 2002 You wouldn't think someone his age would get caught up in that rappers getting shot stuff. Unless it was just a random robbery type thing, but since it was in the studio that's unlikely. Well, i guess even those who seem unlikely to can get caught up in something that gets them shot. I mean hell Marvin Gaye was shot and killed by his own daddy over business.
Guest Kibagami Report post Posted October 31, 2002 One of the men who helped bring hip-hop into the mainstream...I don't have the right words to say. The man deserves some respect... Rest in peace, Jason Mizell. S.
Guest oldschoolwrestling Report post Posted October 31, 2002 I saw them in concert many times back in the 80's and DJ Jam Master Jay always 'brought it' with the best of them. RIP Jay. The Kings of Rock never die. Kick off shoes, jump on the jock Listen to the Jam Master as he starts to rock His name is Jay and he's on his way To be the best DJ in the US of A J-a-y are the letters of his name Cutting and scratching are the aspects of his game So check out the Master as he cuts these jams And look at us with the mics in our hands Then take a count, 1 2 3 Jam Master Jay, Run-D.M.C. He's Jam Master Jay, the big beat blaster He gets better cause he knows he has to In '84 he'll be a little faster And only practice makes a real Jam Master We're live as can be but we're not singing the blues We got to tell all y'all the good news The good news is that there is a crew Not 5, not 4, not 3, just 2 2 MC's who are claiming the fame And all other things won't be the same Beacause it's about time for a brand new group Run-D.M.C. to put you up on the scoop We make the fly girls scream in ecstacy We rock the freshest rhymes at a party We put all the fellas in a daze It's everyone that we amaze And we got the master of a disco scratch There's not a break that he can't catch Jam Master Jay that is his name And all wild DJ's he will tame Behind the turntables is where he stands Then there is the movement of his hands So when asked who's the best, y'all should say: "Run-D.M.C. and Jam Master Jay" Jam Master Jay is the one in charge It's up to him to rock beats that are truly large He is the master of the scratch and cut So move your arms, so move your legs So won't you move your BUTT We're not talking ground, we're not talking sky We're not talking low, we're not talking high We're not talking big, we're not talking small We want all of the people on off the wall We're not talking night, we're not talking day But we're talking bout Jam Master Jay
Guest Nevermortal Report post Posted October 31, 2002 Can't say I was ever a fan, but I'm sure he meant a helluva lot to a very big number of people. He'll be missed by them I'm sure. On the other hand, the HHH entrance theme comments were beyond fucking hillarious. I laughed for nearly a minute. But does this mean Lemmy is next? NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Guest Midnight Express83 Report post Posted November 1, 2002 Part of me is sad that a man, scrach that. A father and husband is killed for no reason. But part of me is pissed that shit like this goes on. It is like people need to kill others to prove how big they are. It makes no sense that rap has got the point where 90% of all songs currently are about drugs and shootings. I mean look at 50 cent. The fucker was shot 8 TIMES ALREADY! and he still keeps acting like a "thug". I guess Ma$e was the smartest rapper ever by leaving the game before anything happen. Ugh, before I rant let me just stop. And this is coming from a rap fan. I will try to find the Chuck D interview he had on 105.1 this morning.

Guest areacode212 Report post Posted November 1, 2002 This is very sad news. Like many children of the 80s, I grew up listening to Run-DMC. They introduced me to both rap and Aerosmith. The police are looking into the idea that enemies of his protege 50 Cent may have been involved in Jam Master Jay's shooting. I just came from the shrine at the site of the killing (it's 4 blocks from where I work). Fans left a bunch of messages, flowers, CDs, and pairs of Adidas tied to the fence. His uncle was there talking to some reporters about how much Jay contributed to the community. I wonder how Aerosmith will pay tribute to him at their show in Phoenix tonight. Guest Respect The 'Taker Report post Posted November 2, 2002 Ironic how the guy was killed, considering he was very anti-violence and hate. Truly, one of the pioneers of music have been taken away from us, a sad time for both the music industry and DMC fans alike. God bless him for his contributions. Guest welshjerichomark Report post Posted November 2, 2002 this is terrible, especially when you consider what run dmc were about, they didn't talk about drugs and violence, they just made good music, i wish that was the case with rappers today
