Heel or Face?

How do you distinguish a heel from a face? Aside from the in ring characteristics, I find it hard to see who is the heel and who's the face by reading the regular updates on what Muto said about Tenryu or what Chono said about Laurer.

 

Does the concept exist outside the ring?
