Gladiator and Austin-McMahon

When this came out all I saw from the IWC was that they ripped off the Austin-McMahon angle from WWF TV, granted there are obvious elements that paraell the angle but so many IIWC members said they couldn't stand watching it because they saw it already with Austin vs McMahon.

 

Well anyway, this made me think the authors (or SOMEONE affiliated with it) actually did borrow from the WWF storyline (or at least the one leading up to WM XV) but whenI read about the orgins of the movie I read that it came from an old (I think) spanish painting that depicted a Gladiator waiting the kill signal from the emperor in the Coliseum, and no mention was made of modern day gladiators such as pro-wrestlers, boxers, ultimate fighters, ect that could obviously serve as a template for anyone trying to recreate a bloodlust sport from centuries ago

 

So was this a case of the IWC just bitching about how the story seemed to echo a major WWF story or was it borrowed, just that no one involved with the movie wanted to mention that they took elements from a WWF storyline?

How the hell is Gladiator's storyline supposed to be a ripoff of Austin-McMahon? It was a ripoff of Spartacus and The Count Of Monte Cristo if anything.

The Working Class hero won't be a puppet for the guy who runs the show. That's how they're similar.

 

I don't think it's a ripoff, that plots been used too many time to count.

Gladiator is actually very similar to Hamlet except Maximus already knows who killed Marcus Aurelius, so they cut out the first half of the play.

 

Hamlet = Maximus

 

Claudius + Laertes = Commodus

 

Gertrude = Lucilla

 

Hamlet the Elder = Marcus Aurelius

 

Horatio = Juba

 

Polonius = Falco

 

Fortenbras = Gracchus

 

Guildenstern & Rozencrantz = Quintis

 

Ophelia = Lady Maximus

 

Some details have changed, but the basic plot is still there.
