A's bring in Randy Johnson, the scout

(Gotcha)

On Thursday, the club named Randy Johnson as a special assistant to the general manager. Johnson will be involved in evaluating talent on all levels of the organization with special emphasis on scouting in the Southern California area.

Johnson spent the last eight seasons in the Detroit Tigers organization, where he served as a special assistant to the general manager and coordinator of pro scouting. Before joining the Detroit organization, he spent four seasons (1994-95) as a scout for the San Diego Padres and two with the Rockies. Johnson played 11 seasons of professional baseball, including three seasons in the major leagues with the Braves and two in Japan.

The club also announced the following promotions and hirings within the baseball operations department: Ron Vaughn promoted to national crosschecker; Will Schock promoted to west coast supervisor; Billy Owens promoted to east coast supervisor; named Steve Barningham northwest area scout; Carl Fraticelli named Northern California area scout.

See, I knew something was up because teams can only sign players on their current rosters until the middle of november. As an added bonus, Randy Johnson isn't a FA, meaning he would have to be traded (Yeah, right..)
