I just picked this up at the Best Buy in South Attleboro, MA (MASSHOLES R3PR3Z3N7) for $21, and I must say: IT'S WORTH EVERY PENNY.

 

It's mostly black and death metal bands covering Slayer classics, but I've only listened through Disc 1 so far, so I could be pre-judging it. This album was released off of Dwell Records, and is pretty much the two Gateways To Hell: A Tribute To Slayer compilations compressed into one under a new name.

It's got to be better than "In Memory of Celtic Frost" which is one of the worst tribute albums I've ever heard. From the looks of things, it's probably pretty killer.

 

I'd really like to hear Incantation's take on Hell Awaits, too. I'll probably pick this up if I see it anywhere.

As an aside to that Celtic Frost tribute. Some suck ass band tried doing Procreation of the Wicked, only they played it tuned to E. to E for christ's sake. It sounded like absolute shit.

 

I think I traded that CD to someone for some food or something. Seriously, it was that worthless.

Hey, Agent, I regularly cover old-school Six Feet Under (as in pre-Maximum Violence, when they were an ORIGINAL death metal band) with standard tuning. Call me crazy, but I dig standard tuning a lot more than drop. Most I'll drop is one whole step.

It depends on the song. With Procreation, it's GOT to be in a lower tuning, because the song itself is really simple, and just sounds lame as hell unless it's got that crunch of a really low tuning.

Well, Arch Enemy tunes to B-Standard (meaning everything is down about 3 steps), and I orgasm over Arch Enemy...

 

And I remember Fear Factory did a few songs in Drop-A I dug...

 

I just prefer PLAYING in E-Standard or D-Standard...

I'm currently listening to Disc II, and it is actually superior to Disc I. Here's one of the main reasons:

Almost all of the bands on Disc I are your generic death metal band that have singers that sound like the Cookie Monster with Strep Throat. Plus, the Gain is waaaaaay too high, so you can barely tell the differences between notes unless they're, like, an octave apart.

 

Disc II also has more variety, as the covers are usually dead-on (Hate's cover of "Post Mortem" rivals Monstrosity's "Angel Of Death" and Dark Funeral's "Dead Skin Mask" as the best cover in the collection, with Abigor's "Crionics" and Nocturne's "Hardening Of The Arteries" in good contendership) with just enough spice to make each track stand out.

E Flat and B Flat are probably my favorites. With the first, you don't sound too muddy or anything, but it still sounds a little more evil than E-standard. Slayer uses it a lot. B flat's just heavy, with extra crunch to it.

Dark Funeral's "Dead Skin Mask" is one bad ass cover, I must say.

I only mentioned it because there's two covers I know about.

Say, let's think of a list of well-known metal songs we'd like to hear covered by lesser-known metal acts (or just metal acts that you think would make the song sound cool)...

 

Only catches:

1. Can't be an already existing song (meaning no Motörhead covering "Enter Sandman," or Cradle Of Filth covering "Black Metal," etc.).

2. One Black Sabbath and one Megadeth song need to be taken care of.

3. 8 "track" minimum.

 

Yeah, this is a pretty stupid idea, but we're all bored and hounding the music board, waiting for the latest post in the metal-related topics, so why not?

Corey - Ever heard anything from Iced Earth's "Tribute to the Gods"?

 

I think it may have only been included in the box set, but the bottom line is, they have a cover of Black Sabbath (the song) Hallowed Be Thy Name, and Number of the Beast, amoung others. Good stuff.

 

Personally, I'd pay money to hear Demons and Wizards cover just about anything, but then again, I'd pay money to hear then do anything, period.

My friend has Tribute to Gods by Iced Earth and it is actually not a bad CD IMO.

 

And yes, the lack of Raining Blood, Skeletons of Society really does make this CD not the great, but with some good bands on their it makes up for it.

 

Its probably better off that Raining Blood was not on it, then some band really doing a shitty cover

Off topic and not at all important, but God I fucking hate Iced Earth. A buddy of mine was obsessed with them, Rhapsody, and Blind Guardian. Drove me nuts. I can only listen to songs about the wizard on the hill so often...
