your favorite CD ever

Mutations by Beck, for reasons I've already gone into in detail here and back in the day on the EZBoard. Not a song on the album that's less than great, and "Diamond Bollocks", the hidden track, nicely bridges the gap between Mutations and Midnite Vultures.

Nothing like getting nicely toasted, turning out all the lights and just chilling on the couch with Mutations blaring (and Three EPs by the Beta Band and Harvest by Neil Young in the other two slots in the changer, to really make it a happy land).

It's a toss-up between Radiohead's "OK Computer," Bob Dylan's "Blonde On Blonde," and The Clash's "London Calling."  Three albums that I would consider to be the best of their respective decades and genres.

As far as Creed is concerned, I can articulate exactly what it is that I dislike about them.  Their music is bland an unimaginative.  They didn't sell out because they had nothing to offer or sell to begin with.  They outright pandered their monster ballad-ish, Celine-Dion-with-guitars "With Arms Wide Open" to Top 40 radio and that's where the average RAWK~! kids' resentment of them comes from.  But I have always and will always dislike bands that play sludgy, mainstream rock music.  It just does not appeal to me.  Not to mention the fact that Scott Stapp is a pompous ass.

If you can add "Best of.." CDs on the list then its a tie:

Mariah Carey: "The Hits"

Prince: "Best of and B-sides 1 and 2"

If you can't add "Best Of.." another tie comes about.

112- "Room 112"

Eminem- "The Marshall Mathers LP"

If you say Mix CDs ANOTHER tie comes again.

Wu Tang

New Edtion

Jay-Z

)r. ])eath,Mar. 06 2002,20:37]Just like people started hating Limp Bizkit for no reason. At least people think that Fred Durst is stealing music now, so that justifies a reason to dislike them.

Check out the first Limp Bizkit CD and compare it to the crap they put out now and you'll see why everybody hates that little troll Freddy Durst. That and the fact he hangs out with Carson and the TRL gang. Makes me want to fuckin' puke.

Mariah Carey: "The Hits"

You're kidding, right?

Mine would be The Bends by Radiohead or All This Useless Beauty by Elvis Costello.

I could listen to Kiss "Alive!" (Remastered version) on an eternal loop and I'd die happy. In fact I always have at least one Kiss CD on my car CD changer. KISS RULES. Why the #### are they not inducted in the RnR Hall of Fame already?? Talking Heads?? Gimme a break...

Peace.

The difference between KISS and Talking Heads is like the difference between sports entertainment and wrestling.  One uses lots of flash and glitter and bullshit to mask the fact that it has little worthwhile content.  The other doesn't have to.

Kiss doesn't deserve to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  They were and are a genuinely shitty band who needed a gimmick to "get over," as it were.

OOOOh, a debate. I like it!

Kinetic, obviously you're a TH fan so I won't waste my time trying to "turn you to the dark side". I'm just going to point to things up. Take away the makeup and you've got (besides old guys in thir early 50s):

The greatest live Rock album in history "Alive!" (I'm not the only one who says this)

A great catalog of worldwide known songs: DEtroit Rock City, RnR All Night, Deuce, ...just to name a few, but surely more than TH. Not to mention BETTER songs.

Better charting songs and albums than TH.

The most Gold certified albums in America second to the Beatles (speaking of bands)

Sales of over 80 million albums worldwide.

Influenced more bands and musicians than TH, surely.

Just some of the things off the top of my head. I'm sure the makeup wasn't solely responsible for this, was it? Of course, they're not the greatest musicians or songwriters, but they've got tons of songs better than, say, "Burning down the house". Maybe TH can top Kiss' videos, but that's it.

You can fire away now, Kinetic.

Peace.

A distinction needs to be made between "well-known" and "better."  AIDS is well-known.  Hitler is famous the world over.  That doesn't make them good.

Beyond that, your concept of Talking Heads is obviously taken from what you've seen on MTV or heard on the radio.  "Once In A Lifetime" is a fine song, but it doesn't even begin to hint at what the rest of their music was like.  I'm not going to tell you to pick up "Remain In Light," but I will say that if you don't an evil gnome will eat your first-born child.

Also:  I won't debate that point about Kiss being more influential than Talking Heads.  But you have to look at who they influenced.  I hold Kiss directly responsible for the 80s hair metal movement, and that isn't an accomplishment to hang your hat on by any means.  Radiohead got their name from a Talking Heads song.  I need not say anymore.

Talking Heads > Kiss

You need to take Kiss for what it is, loud music with a cool show. They don't give a #### about how the music rates with the likes of Led Zep, the Who, or anyone else. It was just a whole lot of fun. If you have never been to a show you are missing out. regardless of what people say or think, Ace did have some good licks on those early albums. "Hotter Than ####" (The song) is just awesome, as is "Parasite". Don't try to compare Kiss with the more technical bands, it's just like the old saying with apples and oranges.

Kinetic, you're comparing AIDS and Hitler with Kiss?

Tell me you didn't say that. Tell me...you didn't say that.

Granted, my knowledge of TH music is very limited and MTV influenced. What's the scope of your Kiss music knowledge? "Beth" is as beautiful a song as they come, a fine song, so they're capable of that, too. Don't like that song?

As far as influences go, I won't name the obvious big-haired rock bands, even though most of them picked up a guitar after LISTENING to Kiss. How about Lenny Kravitz? Don't like him either? Oh...

I'll stress again. "Alive!" is the greatest Live Rock album ever. It's widely regarded to be so. The makeup doesn't come into play here, JUST THE MUSIC.

Is Talkin Heads actually Rock and Roll? How so? I know the definition goes beyond guitar-bass-drums bands, so who qualifies? That was actually my point in this thing, but I'm liking this little debate.

And sorry, man, I won't be picking up that album you say. When the gnome comes over, I'll tell him you like TH so he'll show up at YOUR place.

Peace.

I'd compare AIDS and Hitler favorably with KISS.  Have you heard "Lick It Up"?  They should build a museum in D.C. for people who have been exposed to that song.

As a red-blooded white American male, I've listened to my fair share of classic rock stations.  They all play Kiss and a lot of them.  So I've heard all of the hits and whatever albums cuts they've seen fit to play.  "Beth" is such sappy drivel.  There's nothing worse than a hard rock band making an obvious plea to Top 40 radio to play their music.  It always, always turns out bad.

AIDS and Hitler > Lenny Kravitz

I don't know what the qualifications to get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame are, in terms of what they would deem rock and roll.  It's become more of a popular music hall of fame, ranging from the creation of rock music onward.  With that as the only pre-recquisite, Talking Heads definitely deserve to be in there.  If they're willing to induct bands by virtue of popularity and sales, then Kiss will make it eventually.  But if talent and quality output continue to play as a factor, they'll continue to be shunned.

What the h...??

Well, I'm just gonna have to chalk up Kinetic as one of those weird people. Not liking Kiss is one thing, but this really cracks me up.

I'm sure all the "critics darlings" like TH (which I'm officially hating thanks to you, Kinetic), or REM (which I like) will eventually be inducted in the RnRHOF for their musical prowess or musicianship or whatever. Kiss will get inducted, no doubt, it's just that the necessary 25 year lapse to qualify is done already and still nothing. But rest assured, they will be inducted.

As far as quality output goes, I say again: "Alive!" will be remembered centuries from now as a Testament of Great Rock and Roll music. What TH album can claim that? None for sure. In fact, I bet 20 years from now nobody will remember who Talkin Heads was, just another band with a chick for bass player. But Kiss will be remembered by the people as one of the greatest Rock bands ever.

I think we should rename this thread, don't you?

Peace.

I don't really like Kiss, but the fact remains they sold out more seats than anyone, ever, to a single concert. Do with that what you will.

Favourite albums?

Appetite For Destruction - Guns N Roses

Metallica - Metallica

Nothing Safe: The Best Of The Box - Alice In Chains

Talking Heads first album came out in 1976 (or '77.  I'm not sure.  It's funny that I'm spending so much time defending a band that I've just recently gotten an interest in).  People still know who they are now, so I think their legacy is safe.  Neither of us is going to convince the other of anything, so I say it's time to stop doing this.  I'll accept that Kiss has the right to exist and will call off all bounties on the head of Gene Simmons, so long as you accept Talking Heads right to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  Aloha.

Deal.

BTW, Talking Head's first album came out on Sep-Oct 1977, so technically the mandatory 25 years needed to qualify have not elapsed yet, but well. They disbanded in 91, when the three remaining members minus David Byrne formed another band ( I believe they released an album called "No talking Just Head" or something like that). Their show at the RnRHOF is their first since. I think their biggest selling album is "Stop Making Sense" and their highest charting single is "Burning Down THe HOuse" at #9. Just a little synopsis.

How the h... do I know this? Ok, signing off...

Peace.
