Guest bob_barron Report post Posted November 3, 2002 SNL Review: Eric McCormack/Jay-Z Greetings all. First I’d like to just say RIP Jam Master Jay. Run-DMC did so much for rap and music in general and a lot of it was because Jam Master Jay was behind the turntable rocking the beat. He will be missed greatly. Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizzel 1965-2002 Sports Report- Devils- Well Pat Burns is working his first year magic and I am very pleased especially with the Flyers also kicking ass, making the division uber-competitive. Canucks- Canucks are doing alright. I wish they were better. I like them getting rid of Jan Hlvac- he was a major disappointment for them. Tonight’s win over the Wild was huge. Toronto- Every year one team kicks ass, one team struggles but does okay, and one team flat out sucks. This year Toronto is part three and that they have flat out sucked and have ruined two consecutive Saturdays. Come on guys- I moved here so you wouldn’t suck! Nets- 3-0 is a great way to start the year and it looks like they haven’t missed a beat from their run last year. Jason Kidd has had almost two triple doubles and Dikembee Mutombo looks to be fitting in nicely. Saints- Last weeks loss was disappointing but they’re still 6-2 and still in first place so it’s still over like rover. Mailbag! [email protected] writes- Do you think SNL's changing of the person porytraying Sadaam Hussein may be a reference to the reports of Sadaam look-alikes? 'Swhat I think. Hmmm- I didn’t think of that. If it was then I have to give major kudos for SNL for that cause it’d be pretty clever. I think it was just because Darrell had to get ready for Hardball or something. Chad Ruffner wrote me an email on the WWE sucking ass and how they should bring back Russo- I responded by mentioning Russo killing WCW and HE responded with- Hi Bob, While I look forward to your response In a future Mailbag, I have this to say In the meantime In Re: To Vince Russo 1.) The Patient that was known as WCW was already Terminally Ill long before Vince Russo took over Creative. Although he didn't overly help, he didn't drive WCW into the ground by himself. You can thank Eric Bishoff, Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash, Brad Siegal, and Kevin Sullivan among others for The demise of WCW. 2.) I'll simply point once again to the ratings Vince Russo drew while Head Writer In The WWF as compared to what their drawing now. Besides, with the direction The Company is going In now (Soap Opera Element, Risque Story lines) who better to head creative of The Raw Brand than the man who basically Implemented this kind of storytelling Into wrestling? The Federation has nothing to lose at this point. Despite what you may think, I do not like everything that Vince Russo did/has done. That "Work/Shoot" thing he did while In WCW got on my nerves just as much as It probably got on yours. And I'm not saying he won't write anything stupid In the future should he come back, I just think the positives outweigh the negatives. I guess when It comes to the subject of Vince Russo, you and i will just have to agree to disagree. That being said, I thank you for taking time out to write to me. Later, Chad 1) WCW was not terminally ill by the time Russo got there. It was doing ok but Russo pretty much crashed it into the ground. He was actually given a survey of what fans in WCW wanted to see and pretty much did the opposite. 2) But when Vince Russo left- the WWF did tremendous ratings and buyrates and they did it by having you know- actual wrestling and great matches. They have a lot to lose- they’re contract with Viacom isn’t forever and I’m sure they’re not to happy with the ratings RAW has received. I don’t like this new direction the company is going in- Smackdown! is the place to be. I understand your point but I think his negatives waaaaaaaaaaaaay exceed his positives. But the guy is currently unemployed so who knows if WWE may give him a ring. Sara Meeker writes- hey, kick ass reviews man i'd like to thank you on your non-idiocy which i have found in other reviewers. your unbiased opinion is most appreciated its nice to listen to a review where the person isn't like "jimmy is great!" just cause he's hot and also visa versa where the guys are just like jealous. i am myself a jimmy fan (has nothing to do with the fact that he ain't ugly...i personally prefer seth HES a hottie and hes funnier!) there is one exception that i would let ANYONE make fun of and that would be sanz. has he ever played ANYTHING but the sanz character? i just don't get why the hell he's on! if anyone agrees with me let me know. i would like to know i'm not the only person who can spot a jackass when i see him with much admiration , sarah p.s. i hope no one is "offended" by my haratio hatred, if u are actually im sorry i just dont care... You are welcome. Don’t worry- I’m not jealous of Jimmy or anything and anyone who prefers Seth over Jimmy obviously reeks of supercooldom. If by the Sanz character you mean Hispanic man that is fat then I can’t really think of anything besides Rap St. If you agree with Sara email her at [email protected] and tell her she reeks of supercooldom!!! PS: If someone is offended by your Horatio hatred then its probably someone who would wanna do something gross like make out with him or something Sara Goldenberg writes- Love that espanol part you put it!!!!! Muchos gracias senorita. [email protected] writes- hey i read your review on SNL's show on 12/8 (im writing a paper for school) and i noticed you said you were there live. so was i i was in the 2nd row on the 'select seats' on the ground. that was definately the best SNL show i've ever seen. absolutely loved it. oh well, just thought i'd touch base haha Take Care, Emilie Cool- Rob Thomas was also at that show and yes- I did get to meet him. The Leafs lost so I need to brag about something. The Hugh Jackman show was pretty amazing and even in reruns it holds up. I wouldn’t call it the best SNL show ever but I’d rank it #4 on the all time list. Select seats rule all!! I was in the upper part in the centre and they were some kick ass seats. Wanna be in the mailbag??? Email me anything at [email protected] Cold Opening Cast- Darrell Hammond, Chris Parnell, Seth Meyers, Will Forte Thoughts- Cool- I always dug Darrell’s Guiliani and he was in fine form tonight. This skit started out great but dragged a little towards the end. I’m a big Guliani fan but I have to agree- him doing all these political ads is a bit weird. I wonder if he’s thinking president in 2008 or something. Oh yea- vote for Pataki BTW. Skit was pretty funny and had creativity regarding LFNYISN so it gets ***1/4 Monologue Cast-Eric McCormack, Chris Kattan Thoughts- The week after I say I run out of jokes making fun of CK- He has to come out in his Mango attire. I guess he was baiting me or something. The fourth week in a row of a not real monologue is getting pretty old. The whole premise was pretty lame to start and McCormack’s song at the end was just sad. It should be noted that Eric McCormack went to Ryerson University (where I’m going) He went to their theatre programme and if the girl who lives across from me is any indication- he didn’t get a too good education. Skit stunk BTW. * The Bachelor Cast- Eric McCormack, Rachel Dratch, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Kattan Thoughts- Poor one legged girl. Everyone else in this was very unfunny (I guess Dean Edwards got killed in a gang shootout this week so he couldn’t provide any coke for Rachel) except for Amy. I really like this recurring character and I’m hoping they could give her some decent material to work with or something because she could really go places. The farting at the end was really unnecessary ended a what could’ve been a very good skit on a sour note. **1/4 Game Cast- McCormack, Poehler, Rudolph, Dratch, Meyers, Forte Thoughts- Yep- Rachel’s hilarity of two weeks ago was some one week sun not aligning with the moon kinda thing or something. Her voice is just really annoying to me and it really pissed me off in this skit. Her going psycho thing is what usually gives a skit a boost but here it just felt mega tacked on. ¾* Campaign Ads Cast- Kattan, Dratch Thoughts- Nothing will really ever beat the campaign ads of a few years ago with Will and Parnell. This one just didn’t click with me too well as the joke was lost on me. Vote for Pataki. * American Morning Cast- McCormack, Poehler, Parnell, Dratch, Tina Fey Thoughts- Well holy Toledo Tina is in a skit. Here is your mega odd possibly creepy connection of the week- Tina made out with McCormack in this skit. Now someone who watches too much Queer as Fold would be like: whoa- Tina into gay people. BUT! A Canadian like me, who has actual logic sense and isn’t gay looks at this way- Tina made out with McCormack in this skit and we’ll assume she wrote it since she well starred in it. Eric McCormack is a graduate of Ryerson University. Now loyal readers or anyone who has had like one five minute conversation with me will know that Tina Fey has hugged me on three separate occasions. I am currently attending Ryerson University. But then I noticed the awfulness that was the blonde wig and realised that Tina couldn’t have written this skit for me since she well- didn’t look unbelievably hot. I mean she looked like someone who would marry Jeff Richmond. ** Campaign Ads Cast- Kattan, Dratch Thoughts- Getting funnier…** Jay-Z and Lenny Kravitz Thoughts- Holy unexpected surprise Batman!!! I actually liked this. I can say this as honestly as Bill Clinton said he didn’t have sexual relations with Monica Lewinsky- wait bad example- but this rocked the body that rocked the party in ways in which Jay-Z has never rocked a body or party. I also got to give him props for the RUN DMC shirt. So I guess the good MG streak is at three. ***1/2 Weekend Update Cast- Fey, Jimmy Fallon, Horatio Sanz, Jeff Richards Thoughts- The jokes ROCKED! Seriously- even Jimmy was feeling it. I’ll give props to Jimmy tonight- he was on like a neckbone and I actually didn’t feel Seth needed to replace him. Tina was her usual awesome self and an Update where Jimmy is on and Tina is awesome usually leads me to proclaim *****. BUT! Good lord did the other stuff absolutely suck. Horatio’s Gene Shalit was amusing the first couple times but now it’s just really dumb. Him dancing around and laughing and what not kind of angered me as it seemed very unprofessional. Jeff Richards’ dancing baby was also horrible and his rap angered me more then made me chuckle. Thus, despite some great jokes tonight I give WU- *** Crazy Court Cast- McCormack, Poehler, Parnell, Sanz, Meyers, Forte Thoughts- WHOA!! For the second week in a row the skit after WU totally rocks the house. I’m wondering if the post Update slot is now the spot that is meant to appeal to the 17 year old Canadian hockey fan demographic since the past two shows have had ****+ skits following Update. Will Forte has a really kick ass voice and I think it totally made this skit, I loved how McCormack was able to make me laugh without saying a word and just having these awesome facial expressions. Every time I heard the bullhorn- I laughed my ass off and it totally woke up from what had been a dying show. Also- mega kudos to my fellow Ram McCormack for having an awesome bad ass hilarious facial expression at the end and I hope the writers keep trying to write for the 17 year old Canadian hockey fan demographic. ****1/4 Radio Show Cast- McCormack, Fallon Thoughts- Hey Jimmy- we get that you can do a lot of voices. That’s what The Simspons is for okay? This skit had its moments of laughter and stuff but Jimmy’s voices (Except for the box one) were pretty unfunny and lame. McCormack didn’t really do anything here either and overall the skit had some mildly amusing parts but sucked for the most part. *1/2 John Hancock Cast- McCormack, Dratch Thoughts- After the lame campaign commercials earlier, it was nice seeing a good and funny one pop out. *** Campaign Ad- Cast- Kattan, Dratch Thoughts- Eh- this was okay and I guess it’s the payoff so ** Jay-Z, Beyonce and Lenny Thoughts- Before she went on did Beyonce Knowles consult Cameron Diaz for advice or something because she looked drunk off her ass here and had me laughing throughout with her “Acting”. Lenny also seemed mega out of place- like he forgot to leave the stage or something. **** on the comedy scale, DUD for the music-count the music score twice and you get- *3/4 Jackass the musical Cast- McCormack, Hammond, Dratch, Meyers, Richards Thoughts- Aside from the temporary blindness occurred from seeing Jeff Richards this was a pretty nice little 12:45 am skit and beats a Great Big Novel or whatever anytime. But please tell Jeff to keep his shirt on next week **1/2 Subway Fred is now named Reggie I Think Cast- Tracy Morgan, Rudolph Thoughts- You know what I don’t get? There’s a fallonfey.com where you can dl every Weekend Update ever and stuff. But I think true hardcore SNL fans want morganrudolph.com- where you can download and watch over and over again the greatness that was subway fred, the greatness that was whatever that skit was in week two that I didn’t pay attention too and tonight’s skit which had so many hilarious moments and deeper subtle messages and little hilarious wink winks to people of all ages that it totally blows away anything SNL has ever done before. DUD The Bottom Line- Avg. skit was **.1 which sadly makes this the first thumbs down of the year and makes Ryerson University look pretty bad. Really nothing to complain about though, the material this week (With the exception of the bullhorn skit) just didn’t click with me. Two weeks ago they gave us a great show with McCain so I’ll excuse them for this one. Thumbs Down

Guest art_vandelay Report post Posted November 3, 2002 I didn't catch the post-WU skit so I won't comment, but I just wanted to mention that I felt the Tina Fey skit was a bit strange because it looked to me like she was a little uncomfortable, or at least not as comfortable as McCormack, during the making out. Am I the only one? Oh, and I'm applying to RTA at Ryerson next year. I'm also in the double Cohort, so I'm basically looking at college, but it's fun to dream. Guest treble charged Report post Posted November 3, 2002 Ooh, double cohort, sucks for you pal. Lucky me, I missed it by one year, or else I'da been fucked royally.

Tina looked a bit off the whole skit but I didn't notice her looking outright uncomfortable or anything kissing McCormack. I got rejected from RTA and it is hard to get into but hey- the girl who lives next door isn't too intelligent and she got in so good luck is what I'm trying to say
Guest MDH257 Report post Posted November 3, 2002 Hey Bob. What do you think the monologue is supposed to be? It hasn't been the host talking by themselves on a regular basis for 15 years. It turned into just another skit a long time ago and you're acting like it's a new development. I thought this week's show was mediocre. Horatio went way too long on Update. BTW, I think Rachel Dratch is very funny.
Guest Mattdotcom Report post Posted November 3, 2002 I thought the Court skit was funny, if only because I was doing roughly the same thing with the EXACT SAME bullhorn at a McDonald's Drive-Thru three weeks ago... Long story.
Guest GeneMean Report post Posted November 3, 2002 I'm on Bob's side about the monologue. Although the days of the true monologue seem to have gone the way of the dodo. I give a big thumbs down to the court skit. The only thing funny about that to me was Forte as the judge. The show was really sucking to me there at the start (except for the cold open, which was good) and then Jay-Z went out there and that just shit on the rest of the show for me. I swear to God Lenny Kravitz and that other guitarist should've talked to each other before the performance and said "Hey I'll vamp the A-chord and you play the filler parts" I don't even see why the fuck they were even plugged in as they weren't playing a damn lick that first song. It would've been okay in my book if Jay-Z would've had the guy from Cake on stage playing guitar, seeing as how that was his damn song. Another no talent rapper that has to surround himself with others. But you wanna know why this show really sucked? Of course you do. No Fred Armison = no funny. I'd like to know who won at NFL2K3 backstage between him and Dean. BTW, I think Rachel Dratch is very funny I do too, but not last night. Everything seemed forced. BTW, I think Rachel Dratch is very funny. I guess I'm complaining more that the monologues have kinda sucked ass this year. Jon Stewart last year did a real monologue and it was the best monologue of the year IMO. Reese Witherspoon, Derek Jeter (well kinda), Ellen DeGeneres, Sir Ian McKellen all did monologues last year making 1/4 of the monologues actual monologues so there is hope for us yet. And take that TC- Mattdotcom liked 'Crazy Court'

Forte I think had the perfect voice for the skit with stern kinda wussyish voice. I'll agree on the suckiness of the show but I don't know I was digging Jay-Z and Lenny. I don't know the song they were playng but I thought it was cool and it was funny hearing lyrics such as you too and guns and roses. I honestly don't know what the song was supposed to be but whatever it was- it kicked ass. It's funny- Fred Armisen got an article written about him in EW. Lorne's response to the new guy getting some attention- put him in 0 skits. I hate Rachel Dratch a lot but I will give that two weeks ago she was hilarious but this week- eh. She was back to her old habits of suckery
Guest areacode212 Report post Posted November 3, 2002 Are you jealous that I got to meet Pataki & pat him on the arm yesterday? Yeah, it's nothing compared to getting triple hugged by Tina Fey, but it was still kinda cool.
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted November 3, 2002 You got to meet Pataki? That's awesome. I keep getting my Pataki emails that tell me where's he campaigning but for some reason he never campaigns in Toronto Two years ago when I campaigned for Rick Lazio I got to meet him a couple times and one time I saw Charles Schumer walking around NYC. (This was was when he was running against Geraldine Ferreraro)
Guest Slapnuts00 Report post Posted November 3, 2002 Sorry Bob, the Bullhorn sketch was horribly bad. But I actually enjoyed this week. A lot of weird hilarity. If I were to grade the sketches myself: Cold Opening: I thought it was Funny, the Heimlich Kimler line got a big laugh. A- Monologue: It's the monologue, they're never too good, I enjoyed the gag though. B The Bachelor: This was funny, a good parody of the show and the characters were all funny. A- Game: Very weird, but strangely funny. Rachel going crazy got some laughs. B Campaign Ads: I'll grade these all as one. We have political ads just like these where one candidate asks us to CALL THE OTHER CANDIDATE. It's hilarious cuz we can't figure out why. Tremendous parody. A American Morning: Ok, I thought it went on a little too long, but I can see the point. C Weekend Update: Medicore effort. Horatio's impression was pretty funny, but what was up with the rapping baby? B Crazy Court: Horribly unfunny. Seriously, it wasn't offensive or anything, just not funny. No laughs from the audience and no laughs from us. Try again folks. F Radio Show: Another weirdly funny sketch. The concept was good, and Jimmy doing all the voices was pretty funny, but it didnt seem to have a punch line. B- John Hancock: Hilarious. Commercial parodies are what these guys do best. It was dead on of the real thing. A Jackass the musical: Well Jackass itself is pretty offensive so can't fault them there. It was a cute concept and I laughed a little. Again more weird humor, but they didnt have much to work with. C Reggie: HOOOO BOY. I don't understand why this keeps making it on the show. Really, no one thinks its funny. Its stupid. Its offensive and it's boring. Just stop. F- Well besides ending on the poor note, I liked this week's show. A lot of "weird" sketches that seem like what be perfect to watch while on drugs which usually at least creates some laughs. Good effort.

I haven't really seen any call the other candidate ads so I guess just didn't really get into it. Some weeks SNL will have like weird humor skits and I'll really get into them and other weeks (like last night) I just won't get into it. Watch 'Crazy Court' again- HE HONKS A BULLHORN! HILARITY!! Guest Annoyed Grunt Report post Posted November 3, 2002 I liked Crazy Court. It kind of died by the time the thrid bullhorn came out, but I liked it. I'd give it ***.
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted November 3, 2002 Hmmm- Crazy Court to me picked up as the skit went on. I started out thinking ir would suck but then by the end I was laughing my ass off
Guest MDH257 Report post Posted November 3, 2002 Here in Texas, we had tons of those call the other canidate ads in August/September. I didn't see that many in October. Crazy Court wasn't as bad or as funny as people in this thread are saying. It went on too long (it looked like they cut it off and went to comercial in the middle of the last bits of dialogue), but I liked McCormack's facial expressions. I thought the John Hancock parody was great.
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted November 3, 2002 Up in Toronto we get the ads for upstate NY ads and I guess upstate NY is a shithole so all the ads are like: Upstate NY sucks ass and it's all thanks to this guy and then the other guy will claim to have created all these jobs. I think that's where it was supposed to end b/c that seemed like a funny way to end such a great skit. The Hancock parody was pretty good but I didn't laugh that much
Guest MDH257 Report post Posted November 3, 2002 John Hancock wasn't laugh out loud funny, but I was happy to see someone acknowledge what a manipulative scare tatic the original ad was. Guest Mikey2Dope Report post Posted November 3, 2002 Pretty half decent show. I thought the campaign stuff got pretty old really fast. I'm with you Bob as I loved the "Crazy Court" sketch as well. The only one I didn't like was "Jackass: The Musical". 2 things really bothered me: a)Steve-O has a shaved head in real life so the attempt to mimmick him fell flat in my eyes and b)Eric McCormack as Johnny Knoxville (Rule of thumb: You should never impersonate people that are 1000 times cooler than you are). All in all still a pretty good show and one that really surprised me. *** out of *****
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted November 3, 2002 yes- another Crazy Court fan!!!! Hey- McCormack went to Ryerson so he has some coolness
Guest The Electrifyer Report post Posted November 3, 2002 I did not like yesterdays show. There were a few things which made me laugh, but a whole shit load of things that made me not laugh, like that whole "Love" skit. "Crazy Court" was ok, but the overall show was not very good at all.
