Since the attitude era started in 1997 I thought we might as well and see who the best WWF champion has been post '97.  I don't what the hell era we are in now, but I'll count it in with Attitude.  I say Steve Austin because he brought the WWF back to being #1 in '98.

put all these polls in the old school forum, its where they belong, even if the attitude era isnt really "old school" per se.

This is modern, so it belongs here.

Anyways, of the Attitude Era, Steve Austin is without a doubt the best WWF Champion.  His face run in 1998, and his heel run in 2001 are enough proof for me.  He dominated this period.

I don't think the Attitude era officially began until Survivor Series 1997, so Bret and Sid don't really belong on this list.

My vote goes to Austin because, like you said, he was the one who brought respectibility back to the Title, and also I believe that if you take every World Championship match since Survivor Series 1997, I'd say that the vast majority of the good/great ones came with either Steve Austin or Triple H defending or winning the Title.  Plus Austin had a near half-year reign as champ, going over Rock, Kane, UT, Benoit, Jericho, and various mid-carders in the process before finally meeting his match in Kurt Angle at Unforgiven.  Austin's fifth title reign, from WrestleMania XVII to Unforgiven 2001, was the longest WWF Title reign since Shawn Michaels's first reign in 1996, and therefore is THE longest title reign post-S. Series 97.

Because the evidence is in his favor, I vote that Steve Austin is GUILTY!  Guilty, that is, of being the best WWF Champion of the Attitude era and beyond!

Now, just because I'm curious, I'm gonna try to count how many great WWF Title matches there were after S. Series 1997 where neither Austin or HHH was champ going into or coming out of the match. (Keep in mind that "great" might be relative, since match quality generally sucked in 98 and especially 99).

1.) HBK vs. Owen, RAW late 97/early 98

2.) Rock vs. Mankind, 1/4/99 Raw

3.) Rock vs. Mankind, Royal Rumble 99

4.) Rock vs. Benoit, Fully Loaded 2000

5.) Angle vs. HHH, Royal Rumble 2001

Wow, only 5.  You could make decent arguments for Rock/Mankind Halftime Heat, Rock/Mankind Last Man Standing, and the Angle/Rock matches that bookended Angle's first title reign, but I won't.  If I'm forgetting something, I'd like to know, but it seems to me that Austin and HHH were the best champs by far, with Rock coming in a distant third.

Just for kicks, here's the Austin/HHH good title matches list (Since I don't feel like listing them all the proper way, I'll just list opponents and separate by years for more clarity):

Austin

1998: HBK, Dude Love, Dude Love

1999: Rock, Rock, Mankind/HHH

2001: Rock, Benoit, Benoit, Benoit/Jericho, Angle

11 total.

HHH

1999: Austin (@ No Mercy, an underrated match)

2000: Cactus, Cactus, Taka, Jericho, Rock, Rock

6 total.

Okay, I realized during this that Rock was champion going in and/or coming out of 7 great title matches (Including the first list), but I'd still put him behind HHH slightly.  I mean, four of Rock's great matches as Champion are matches where he loses the Title, compared to only one of those for Austin and one of those for HHH.

Therefore, I can't wait for the Rock to win the title next, because when he loses it, it's almost certain to be a good match!

I would have to go with the heel Triple H from last year. He put on repeated 4 star matches. He actually wore the belt around his waist too, which is a rarity in todays wrestling.

Stone Cold for sure. Triple H was second but Stone Cold is in the top 2 or 3 all time. He was the WWF for a few years. I'll never forget some of those pops he got when he was at his peak.

Steve Austin. I mean he is in the top 3 of all-time. How can he not be the best for his era?

Austin - biggest star since Hogan, and can also wrestle, which helps.

Even though I feel like a complete drone... I'll have to say Austin.
