Guest The Amazing Rando Report post Posted November 4, 2002 For anyone that has seen my CD collection, they know I am very eclectic in my tastes. Everything from punk to metal to soft rock to techno to every genre in between...they all inhabit my realm of music tastes. Some CDs I don't listen to anymore, some I listen to once a week. It depends on my mood, the time of day, and what has been happening in my life. This leads me to a quote from the movie Empire Records... ...this music is the glue of the world... Now in the context of the quote, the character was speaking of bands like Led Zeppelin, the Residents, Pink Floyd, and others...though he could have put anything on that tape and been correct. No matter what music you listen to, it is the glue of the world...it is the glue of your world. Imagine your life without music. No MTV, no commercials, no television, a muted world in defiance of catchy beats and lyrics. It's impossible to comprehend to us, surrounded by pop culture and the music that surrounds it. I try to follow most new music, I have my tastes and I have my bands that I wouldn't listen to if I was forced. I have bad thoughts on country, most teen pop, and some rap...so don't even try to get me into conversations about it...for though my knowledge about rap and teen pop is okay, my knowledge of country completely sucks and I know this...so I stay away. But if I am thrust into a conversation about punk, ska, hard rock, nu-metal, soft rock, classic rock, noise pop, shoegazing, garage rock, indie rock, college rock, space rock, or any of the other billion genres of rock...i'll try my best to learn as much as I can while trying to get my point of view across. I'm always looking for new music to be pushed toward me and I love to hear what is heralded as "the best new music" so that I can have an opinion on everything presented in life. Well...everything but country. I can't understand death metal and so I don't listen to it. I know it is a staple to a few members of this board but I can not have an intellectual conversation about it. I know who In Flames, Convenant, and other such bands ARE, but as I am not big fans of the music I can not provide adequate responses to threads based around them. But I'm willing to learn. I am trying to become one of the most well-rounded people on this board when it comes to music knowledge. Somewhere in the range of Inc or Kinetic or others that populate here. Don't get me wrong, I know alot...but when put into a situation with a group of people that know ALOT about many different genres...I seek out the knowledge presented. Music is the glue of the world.......and to understand the glue...helps you understand the world... **i have no idea where all THAT came from**
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted November 4, 2002 Well ro-un-d-ed? I don't get it. That means, like, listening to more than two genres of music? I am no help in this matter. I just have trouble seeing how anyone can like almost ANYTHING. There's just so much music I can't stand.
Guest Incandenza Report post Posted November 4, 2002 I don't think anyone can truly like all forms of music; it just can't be done. Those who say otherwise are not being honest. I hear what you're saying, but I'm not sure I get the point. You know a lot of different stuff, but you don't have to know everything. I know very little about punk or metal, and there are people on this board who can smoke me in their knowledge of those genres (Agent and Corey being particularly wise in the latter field). I find its easy not to sweat it. If you're not into a certain kind of music, there's no need to worry about it.

Guest Kotzenjunge Report post Posted November 5, 2002 Even I don't like everything. For example, I can't STAND Christian, and just plain can't get into metal. Fo sheez, Kotzenjunge
Guest The Amazing Rando Report post Posted November 5, 2002 christian metal is pretty cool...
Guest LooseCannon Report post Posted November 5, 2002 What about christian gangsta rap? I have a friend who's trying to break into that genre. He's not really very christian, but he thinks it'd be easier to make money going that route than trying to be a real rapper or whatever.
Guest The Metal Maniac Report post Posted November 5, 2002 Isn't there a difference between liking music, and knowing music? I mean, knowledge in and of itself doesn't mean there's any emotional attachment. I know that there's grass - but that doesn't mean I like it. I think it'd be possible to know all types of music - that is to say, put in any CD, and ID what sub-genre of what genre it is - without having to LIKE all types of music. Myself, I can't begin to understand why some people like some music - but I'm sure it's possible for someone to realize that metalheads like metal because of X, where X could be anything from guitar solos to death growls to oversized zombie mascots. And I think they could also realize that other people like rap music because of Y, where Y is good rhyming skills, or whatever other reasons it is that people like rap (I can't understand why they like it, myself.) Bottom line, I think you could gain an encyclopedic knowledge of music if you really tried, so that if someone's having a conversation about Suicidal Tendencies, you know what they're talking about when they talk about ST's recent funk tendencies, and then they could switch over and talk about...I dunno, some dance crap (I don't know enough about music to properly make these comparison) and still understand what they're talking about. But that doesn't mean that you'd have to LIKE the music. You could hate Iron Maiden, but still know that they were at the forefront of the NWOBHM. Know what I'm saying? Guest The Amazing Rando Report post Posted November 5, 2002 yes... and I mentioned that I only dislike rap, teen pop, and country... but I want to have that knowledge of every kind of music.... even those... I like pretty much every single kind of music other than those three...and possibly some Christian music... even Classical is cool in certain situations...although I don't think I want to get a large knowledge of it... Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted November 5, 2002 Why do ravers dress funny at raves and wiggle?
Guest Kotzenjunge Report post Posted November 5, 2002 THEY dress impulsively with all kinds of bright colors and other drug effect-accentuating clothing. *I* dress to look good. Never see me in pink overalls or with a fucked up wig on, no siree. The "wiggling" you refer to is their way of dancing, as there really is no established proper way to dance to techno music. I almost wish there was, as some of these people are sorely white and can't move for shit. Fortunately, I can actually dance and not look like a fish out of water trying to stand up. Oh, the drugs make them wiggle like that also. Fo sheez, Kotzenjunge
Guest NoCalMike Report post Posted November 5, 2002 The problem with music currently is that almost NOTHING of any quality will reach the people through MTV and radio, and that is about 99% of where people get their musical tastes from. Clear Channel has gone and fucked everything up for musical artists that don't want to make music to conform to their tiny bubble. Why do you think slowly, hip hop is turning up on "alternative rock" stations, and vice versa. Old-school country, like Johnny Cash and others that told a story OWN. I mean currently I mostly listen to Metal, but I like a lot of different genres. Most of my friends can't understand why I like so many other things, but when it comes to music, they are just stupid and stubborn. The last true genres of music to create themselves were Gangsta Rap and Grunge rock, and that is in the early days before music stations decided ANYTHING and EVERYTHING from the hood and/or Seattle was golden. Ever since those two genres died, everything on the radio has been blurred and bland. I mean come on, who are the country stations kidding, Dixie Chicks and Shania Twain are NOT country music artists, they are contemporary pop and anyone with half a brain knows it. No reason to go down a list of what genres I like and/or dislike, but there is crap and gold in EVERY genre. One thing I know for sure is that no one should be giving people like Kelly from American Idol the time of day. Anyone who watched that show should now understand everything WRONG with the music industry.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted November 5, 2002 Do the ghey pacifiers serve any purpose other than to quell x-induced teeth grinding? The one time I did it, (which might be my least favorite drug I've ever did) I ground my jaw off.
Guest Kotzenjunge Report post Posted November 5, 2002 Yup, you've got it. Sometimes there's acid on the pacifiers too, like Jimi Hendrix used to do with his headbands. And NoCalMike is correct, there is crap and gold in every genre. There is a LOT of Techno that is bland, or just noise, or doesn't have any kind of defining sound to it. I don't rail against the industry for holding down 99% of all music because what I hear, I like. Fo sheez, Kotzenjunge EDIT: For any kind of record that exists, I have yet to do any of these drugs. I just do my homework.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted November 5, 2002 Acid pacifiers? Grindy X teeth? Wiggling? Bah. Metalhead drugs are less complicated. Get drunk. Pit. Get stoned.
Guest Kotzenjunge Report post Posted November 5, 2002 Ehh, to each their own I suppose. I'd get my ass kicked at a metal show no matter how much I tried to fit in, you'd puke all over everyone at a rave (unless some AGGRESSIVE RAVERS~! were there, then they'd kick your ass for puking on their threads), the two worlds will NEVER combine. Fo sheez, Kotzenjunge
Guest NoCalMike Report post Posted November 5, 2002 I am not into a lot of techno, but a friend I used to work with had some cool sounding trance/jungle/techno stuff that was pretty cool, but that is a rarity for me.
Guest Kotzenjunge Report post Posted November 5, 2002 Yeah, when I try to give people examples of the genre, I'm knowledgeable enough at this point to be able to show them the good stuff to get them into it and avoid all the crizzap. Either that or I mix two mediocre tracks together to make one good one. Fo sheez, Kotzenjunge
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted November 5, 2002 Why would I puke on everyone at a rave? I'd probably just have a seizure or something from all the blinking lights and beeping, perhaps start foaming at the mouth. If by some chance I ever wandered into a rave on an acid adventure though, I'd break out the curly shuffle. I guarantee at least one chick would find it amusing. Besides, if you steer clear of a pit at a metal show, chances are you're not going to get sucked into it. (Unless you're watching Nasum live, then it's like getting hit with an avalanche.) But at a rave that evil...DANCING...is everywhere!!!
Guest Kotzenjunge Report post Posted November 5, 2002 Ehh, it's not so bad. You might try it sometime. In fact, I'll bet you've danced a little in your chair in front of your computer before or perhaps in the car while listening to the radio. Isn't it fun?
