Guest Youth N Asia Posted November 5, 2002 Report Posted November 5, 2002 Ghost World I had been wanting to see it for a while cause a couple people I knew wouldn't shut up about it. I liked it as a whole, not a masterpiece, but something I could definatly watch again. Good performances all around. Although I know a few people who act just like that in real life, it's almost trendy now to just hate people at random. They seemed to over do it a little though, hard to put into words. The shirtless guy hanging around the party store was great, it's been bugging me not knowing who that is though. I can picture him perfectly, just don't rememeber where I saw him, it's a recient thing. And Thorn Birch pulled off that look pretty well, kinda hot in a freakish, broody way. Thoughts?
Guest J*ingus Posted November 5, 2002 Report Posted November 5, 2002 I agree with you almost 100%. Oh, and the shirtless guy WAS Metal Ed, making his onscreen debut.
Guest Youth N Asia Posted November 5, 2002 Report Posted November 5, 2002 Metal Ed... Dammit that sounds familar...was he just in a music video or movie or what...fucker's gonna haunt me.
Guest MDH257 Posted November 5, 2002 Report Posted November 5, 2002 He payed Deputy Doofy in "Scary Movie".
Guest Lethargic Posted November 5, 2002 Report Posted November 5, 2002 Metal Ed... Dammit that sounds familar...was he just in a music video or movie or what...fucker's gonna haunt me. He's the cab driver in the Red Hot Chilli Peppers video.
Guest Youth N Asia Posted November 5, 2002 Report Posted November 5, 2002 He's the cab driver in the Red Hot Chilli Peppers video. Dammit! I so should have known that! That's where I remember him from. Thank ye
Guest NoCalMike Posted November 5, 2002 Report Posted November 5, 2002 Ghost World is pretty good. I rented it awhile back and it is on as we speak on one of the movie channels. The part where the music store clerks razz her for being "punk" was hilarious. This movie was pretty different, but right now with all the bullshit coming out of hollywood, different is USUALLY good.
Guest TUS_02 Posted November 5, 2002 Report Posted November 5, 2002 Metal Ed... Dammit that sounds familar...was he just in a music video or movie or what...fucker's gonna haunt me. He's the cab driver in the Red Hot Chilli Peppers video. He was also Dufus from Scary Movie... AND he was one of the dudes from Buzzkill, the old MTV show.
Guest godthedog Posted November 5, 2002 Report Posted November 5, 2002 my favorite movie of 2001. better than 'the 400 blows'. beautiful ending. captures the "what do i do now?" high school angst and fear PERFECTLY.
Guest converge241 Posted November 5, 2002 Report Posted November 5, 2002 ive raved about this movie numerous times here so ill be short and sweet one of my top 20 movies all time very real and very sad in parts Buscemi is god in the movie
Guest Youth N Asia Posted November 5, 2002 Report Posted November 5, 2002 I thought the ending was weak. Not going to live with her dad cause the bitch is back. Growing apart from her friend who didn't want to live with her anyway. And Seymour got too clingy after they did the deed. Then she says something about just picking up and leaving at random, little predictable, maybe my least favorite part of the movie. Still very good though.
Guest converge241 Posted November 5, 2002 Report Posted November 5, 2002 i think the ending was that *spoiler*??? she killed herself
Guest Crucifixio Jones Posted November 5, 2002 Report Posted November 5, 2002 I too have raved about this movie before. right here in fact: http://www.thesmartmarks.com/forums/index....e52bc9c07e19a4d
Guest J*ingus Posted November 5, 2002 Report Posted November 5, 2002 No converge, that didn't happen, who fed you that plate of bullshit?
Guest converge241 Posted November 5, 2002 Report Posted November 5, 2002 thats what i get out of the movie, nobody said it not that they are showing it but symbollically thats what shes doing..just my interpretation
Guest chirs3 Posted November 5, 2002 Report Posted November 5, 2002 Ghostworld was to movies what Metal Gear Solid 2 was to video games. A horrendously overrated load of crap that people are still creaming themselves over.
Guest J*ingus Posted November 6, 2002 Report Posted November 6, 2002 And I'd disagree with you on both counts, chirs. Converge, how did you get that? After all, what she did in the end was just what she'd mentioned wanting to do earlier, suicide was never even mentioned.
Guest converge241 Posted November 6, 2002 Report Posted November 6, 2002 i dont know it just seems like she has nowhere left to really go and that bus is obviously not a "real Bus" and i got an afterlife like feeling of that last shot
Guest C.H.U.D. Posted November 6, 2002 Report Posted November 6, 2002 Ghostworld was to movies what Metal Gear Solid 2 was to video games. A horrendously overrated load of crap that people are still creaming themselves over. Just because you are one of the few people who doesn't like the film, that doesn't make it overrated.
Guest chirs3 Posted November 6, 2002 Report Posted November 6, 2002 I have yet to find a single review that calls this an average movie, or a slightly above average movie, or points out any of it's many many flaws. 99% of reviews I've read call it a wonderful work of art that I should treasure forever and ever. OVER-RATED.
Guest Lethargic Posted November 6, 2002 Report Posted November 6, 2002 I have yet to find a single review that calls this an average movie, or a slightly above average movie, or points out any of it's many many flaws. 99% of reviews I've read call it a wonderful work of art that I should treasure forever and ever. OVER-RATED. You haven't pointed out any yet either have you?
Guest chirs3 Posted November 6, 2002 Report Posted November 6, 2002 I have. Just not in this thread. If you want to go digging into the way-back-whens, you'll find a rant on it by me. If you want the short version: It's not funny. It's labeled as a comedy, and it's not funny. At all. There is nothing in here that made me laugh. And since someone so cleverly (sarcasm) pointed out last time that "so sorry it doesn't have fart jokes go watch an adam sandler movie", that's not the problem. I don't care for Adam Sandler movies or that type of comedy much. It's just not funny. And when I watched it again, this time viewing it as something other than a comedy, it still wasn't a very good movie.
Guest C.H.U.D. Posted November 6, 2002 Report Posted November 6, 2002 So in otherwords, you hate a movie loved by almost everyone else because you didn't get the humour? Oh man. Btw, the film is hilarious. Too bad for you.
Guest chirs3 Posted November 6, 2002 Report Posted November 6, 2002 When did I say I didn't get the humor, C.H.U.D? I got the humor. It wasn't funny.
Guest Youth N Asia Posted November 6, 2002 Report Posted November 6, 2002 It was funny, but not haha funny. I really don't recall laughing either. They shouldn't have marketed it as a comedy.
Guest godthedog Posted November 6, 2002 Report Posted November 6, 2002 lots of the anti-mainstream humor fell flat for me, and the movie truthfully did get quite a few things wrong, but the characters save everything and then some.
Guest J*ingus Posted November 7, 2002 Report Posted November 7, 2002 Clarification: it wasn't funny to you, Chirs. Just because you didn't laugh doesn't mean "it wasn't funny". Just because I laughed didn't mean it WAS funny, either. Humor is a highly subjective thing. As for glowing reviews, go back and read YNA's first post; he basically called it above-average, "not a masterpiece", and I agreed with him.
Guest chirs3 Posted November 7, 2002 Report Posted November 7, 2002 I was, of course, exaggerating with the 99% bit. And I know just because I didn't find it funny, that doesn't mean it's not funny. ' But there is no way anyone here can convince me that this movie deserved praise like "In the name of all that's beautiful and brilliant, do not miss this movie," and "I don't care who you are or what you like, drop everything and see this film,". Honestly, I don't care that much if I see a movie, hate it, and other people like it. I DO care when I see a movie, hate it, and am told by critics (see the quotes above) that there just MUST be something wrong with me if I don't like it. If I see a movie and think it's bad, ok. But if I see a movie, and it's both bad and it's praise is blown horrendously out of proportion (this also applies to video games... I'm looking at you, Metal Gear Solid 2), then I have a real problem with it.
