Guest J*ingus Report post Posted November 7, 2002 Okay, then we have an agreement. (And yeah, I did like MGS2, though not nearly as much as the first one.)
Guest C.H.U.D. Report post Posted November 8, 2002 But if I see a movie, and it's both bad and it's praise is blown horrendously out of proportion then I have a real problem with it. Why? Just because you personally didn't like the film, what is the point of having a problem with other people praising it? And you only consider it's praise "horrendously out of proportion" because of your personal feelings about the film. That doesn't make it "horrendously out of proportion". Guest chirs3 Report post Posted November 8, 2002 No, C.H.U.D., when critics say that this movie is so good that no matter what kinds of movies I like and don't like, no matter if I like or hate the actors, no matter if I'm a fan of the director's work or not, I WILL LIKE THIS MOVIE SO I HAVE TO SEE IT RIGHT NOW, it's overblown praise. Guest El Satanico Report post Posted November 8, 2002 His point is that no matter what your personal feelings about the movie are, it doesn't make you right and all the critics and/or fans wrong. I'm sure that there's people who completely hate Citizen Kane, but that doesn't mean the critics are wrong in their praise of it.
Guest chirs3 Report post Posted November 8, 2002 But if a critic says or implies that "NO MATTER WHAT, YOU WILL LIKE THIS MOVIE", and I don't like it, the critic IS wrong. And much of Ghost World's praise is like that.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted November 8, 2002 So then that means that all reviews of movies are wrong. That would also make your review of Ghost World wrong. Since everyone is wrong on this subject what's the point of all this.
Guest chirs3 Report post Posted November 8, 2002 You aren't listening to me, Satanico. If a critic says "I liked this movie!", and I don't like it, he's not wrong. If a critic says "YOU will like this movie!", and I don't, he IS wrong. And a lot of Ghost World's praise is "YOU will like this movie!" Edit: And there's a lot of reviews of Ghost World that say or imply that something must be wrong with me if I don't like the movie.
Guest Lethargic Report post Posted November 8, 2002 If a critic says that he's not, you know, actually meaning YOU. He probably doesn't know you. Maybe he does, but he probably doesn't. He means most people. So seeing as how most people do like it, he's right. Obviously not everybody is going to like something. I hate arguments about stuff like this. On one hand it's fun to argue on why we think a movie is good or not. But at the same time it's not like somebody is gonna say, oh well if you guys say I should like it then I should. It's pointless. Nobody is going to talk ME out of liking something or into liking something. Seeing as how it all comes to personal taste and opinion, nobody is right or wrong. I may think somebody is stupid for not liking something I think is great but that doesn't make me right to anybody other than myself.
Guest chirs3 Report post Posted November 8, 2002 Would it kill the critics to say "Fans of the comic book will love it, but the uninitiated may have a hard time liking it"? Or "If you like Zwigoff's work, this is the movie for you, but otherwise it might not be the safest bet"? A lot of the praise for Ghost World is universal, which is what I hate. It's not "People who like this kind of movie will like Ghost World", it's "YOU WILL LIKE GHOST WORLD." No movie that has yet to be made deserves praise like that. No movie has been good enough that it will appeal to everyone. So why the hell are the critics playing that card over and over for this movie? That's why I say it gets overblown praise. Guest LooseCannon Report post Posted November 8, 2002 I have never seen someone taken to task with such quibbling semantic points for saying a movie is overrated. Personally I liked the movie, but it is a movie that enjoyed a lot of praise, and it would seem fair for someone to call it overrated. We all know this is a matter of personal opinion. Well, because that wouldn't be true. I never even heard of the comic book, have never seen it, still haven't and I loved the movie. Never heard of Zwigoff either. Most people haven't. So if a critic said if you like Zwigoff you'll like this, 2 people would've seen it. I actually have never seen a critic say YOU WILL LIKE IT NO MATTER either. Not a real critic anyway. Yeah, dumbass internet critics like myself say crap like that but not real critics.

I don't have a problem with someone saying that they personally feel a movie is overrated because everyone is free to have an opinion. It's just the whole i found it to be terrible so everyone who likes it and/or suggests it's a good movie are wrong vibe that's the problem. Opinions are one thing, but telling others that their opinion is wrong is completely different.
Guest C.H.U.D. Report post Posted November 9, 2002 Yeah, I'm having trouble believing this whole "critics are saying you will like film" stuff. I've never read a review, or even a quote of a review saying that about Ghost World.
