Saddest Moments in Sports

-Hank Gathers death. Still remember the local news leading with the announcement that Hank Gathers had collapsed at midcourt and was dead. Bo Kimble's one handed free throws still give goose bumps to this day.LMU was just a joy to watch.

-Greg Moore's death. The worst crash I've ever seen in racing. No one could of survived such a horrifc crash.

-Adam Petty. He was just so young and had his entire life ahead of him.

I forget the year (I think 92) but it was the olympics and it was a mid-distance running event this guy from Britian twisted his ankle in the middle of the run and his father came out to help him off the track, but he didn't want to leave so with his fathers help, he crossed the finish line.  I wish I could remember the specific details, but my whole family was bawling after that.

For me, nothing comes close to Dale Earnhardt dying at Daytona last year.  I was really messed up that day, as was the rest of my family.

I think the British runner was called Derek Redmond, he had a good chance of a medal going in and he just broke down when his ankle went. It was an emotional scene when he finished the race with his fathers help.

The two saddest moments i can remember as a football fan was England losing on penalties to Germany in both the World Cup 90 & Euro Championship 96 semi-finals. The whole nation was just emotionally drained watching those two epic matches and losing both in the same way was heartbreaking.

Tragic sporting deaths are obviously the saddest moments of all.

How the hell do you justify calling NASCAR a sport? And how is it sad when one of those toothless wonders die? Don't they know the risk of making 2,000 lefthand turns while going 150 MPH? Morons. A question for you all - what has 100,000 legs and 100 teeth? The crowd at a NASCAR event! Bua ha ha ha

The saddest thing I've seen in sports (not death related) has to be the No Goal by Brett Hull.

Jesus Christ.

If the fact that having your skate in the crease was illegal WASN'T ENOUGH...the league never apologizes and justifies it by saying that the rule was going to be changed anyway.

Since when do they change rules in triple overtime in game 6 of the Stanley Cup finals.

Honorable mention goes to the No Goal that Philly got in on the Sabres the next year in the playoffs...when the puck went through the side of the net.

The league justifies that one by saying that they had a replay that clearly showed the puck going in.

Which is funny...since it didn't.  Still waiting to see that replay.

I was watching that game and when they said that he was dead, I cried for like two days. It was the one of the most traumatic things I've ever seen in sports.

Another sad moment was that one Seahawks/Jets game where that linebacker got crippled during a play. One of the saddest things I'd seen in football.

I remember when Bo Jackson suffered that hip injury in 1990.  It's a shame that people have essentially forgotten how great an athlete he was...to say nothing of his pop culture status.  Yeah, he came back to post a few mediocre seasons with the White Sox and Angels, but he was never the same.  I'll always remember this guy hitting 500 foot bombs, throwing runners out from the warning track and knocking Brian Bosworth into obscurity.

Another sad moment in sports for me is when I saw Holmes beat the shit out of Ali in his last fight.

I was a HUGE Ali fan and I had watched hours of film with him.

Then I finally saw the Holmes fight.  I knew that Ali should have retired 4 years earlier, but it was still painful to watch.

God bless you champ.
