Guest ArkhamGlobe Report post Posted March 3, 2002 What the hell, I'll give this a go (even though I haven't even seen half of the films up for consideration)... Best Picture: The French Connection The Godfather One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest Annie Hall The Silence of the Lambs Best Director: John Huston (The Treasure of the Sierra Madre) Mike Nichols (The Graduate) William Friedkin (The French Connection) Milos Forman (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) Oliver Stone (Platoon) Best Actor Gene Hackman (The French Connection) Marlon Brando (The Godfather) Jack Nicholson (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) Dustin Hoffman (Kramer vs Kramer) Robert De Niro (Raging Bull) Best Actress Louise Fletcher (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) Diane Keaton (Annie Hall) Kathy Bates (Misery) Frances McDormand (Fargo) and somebody else, probably Jodie Foster in the Silence of the Lambs, as I have hardly seen any of the other best actress winners in the films for which they won. Best Supporting Actor Ben Johnson (The Last Picture Show) Christopher Walken (The Deer Hunter) Sean Connery (The Untouchables) Joe Pesci (Goodfellas) Martin Landau (Ed Wood) Best Supporting Actress Ruth Gordon (Rosemary's Baby) Cloris Leachman (The Last Picture Show) Meryl Streep (Kramer vs Kramer) Linda Hunt (The Year of Living Dangerously) and somebody else, maybe Mercedes Ruehl for The Fisher King? That was actually very tough, as I haven't seen a lot of the films that have won over the years (not even Casablanca and Midnight Cowboy, which is a fact I am very much ashamed about). Oh well, I at least got through each category.
Guest RetroRob215 Report post Posted March 3, 2002 I would say something, but I don't watch a lot of good movies. My favorite Academy Award Winning Movie is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest followed by Silence of the Lambs. That is all.

Comments: The Best Supporting Actress category is VERY thin, which is why I used actresses from movies I've seen with one exception. Linda Hunt's performance in YoLD is VERY acclaimed yet I haven't seen that film.
Guest ArkhamGlobe Report post Posted March 5, 2002 "If Coppola can't compete twice for Best Director, replace his nomination for Godfather Part I with Steven Soderbergh for Traffic." It doesn't really matter if Coppola can compete twice or not, as he did not win the award for best director for The Godfather, it instead went to Bob Fosse for Cabaret. Guest teke184 Report post Posted March 5, 2002 Whoops... I'd been making my list on the assumption that Godfather was a "normal" best picture, which meant it also won for best director. A split between best picture and best director was rather rare until about 5 years ago.
