Guest EricMM Report post Posted November 7, 2002 And Mike: They are available, the price is so high because the government makes a shitload of money on taxing gas. Therefore, they probably will never become mainstream. What are you talking about. The US govt. does NOT tax gasoline the way the rest of the world does, the cost of electric or hybrid cars relates to the new technologies in them and nothing else. If the cost of gas went up, car companies would actually work to create a "normal" hybrid car, at a normal price with normal features, because it would sell. Guest Tyler McClelland Report post Posted November 7, 2002 The government DOES tax gas. Go onto an Indian reservation and see how cheap gas is.
Guest Olympic Slam Report post Posted November 7, 2002 Gas is taxed. I read in my economics class a few weeks back that in order to compensate for the negative spill-overs like pollution that results from car emmissions, the U.S would have to tax each gallon of gas you buy by about $3 or $4! Guest kkktookmybabyaway Report post Posted November 7, 2002 Gas IS taxed in the U.S. Nobody would dare raise gas prices to the point of Europe, unless they wanted to lose their office. I know where you're coming from in regards to America's fascination with big cars and independence (driving rather than mass transit), but America's a big place and we gotta get around. Let the drilling begin detour the caribu herds around the big ol' pipes...
Guest cartman Report post Posted November 7, 2002 Another thing I have a problem with. Cars themselves. Do we really believe that we cant make a car that can last small quantities of Gas for a long time, on top of having a longer mileage life....when we are capable of making SPACE SHUTTLES that can exit/enter the atmpsphere of this planet? SPeaking of Spacecraft...Why cant we load up all of the garbage on earth onto Space Ships and shoot them into the sun? Would'nt that get rid of our landfill problem? The trash would just burn up into nothing right?
Guest kkktookmybabyaway Report post Posted November 7, 2002 Problem is, GM probably won't make as much $$$ with those vehicles...
Guest cartman Report post Posted November 7, 2002 Exactly my point. Money will be the death of the human race...because we all know that Earth aint goin nowhere...WE are!
Guest EricMM Report post Posted November 7, 2002 Problem is, GM probably won't make as much $$$ with those vehicles... because there is no economic incentive to using less gas. raise the price of gas gradually, yet signifigantly, and people would get efficent cars. I mean shit, raise them to European levels, and we'd be at least as efficent as Europe... We'd spend the same amount of money on less gas. SIGNIFIGANTLY less oil. I fail to see the problem in this besides some bitchy no-nothing Americans.
Guest cartman Report post Posted November 7, 2002 Eventually there will be no more Gas/Oil anyways so the guys in the suits that make the money off the shit will milk it for ever red cent anyways.
Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted November 8, 2002 If electric cars were the right price and more readily available to your average consumer, then I would get one in a heartbeat. Oh and I recycle a lot of stuff. The problem with moving solely to electric cars though is that electricity is produced by either coal plants or nuclear power - thus you're trading in the pollution from burning fossil fuels for pollution from the coal plants creating electricity. The only truly "clean" power is solar energy, but I think we're still far from the point where this could be used effectively on a large scale.
Guest EricMM Report post Posted November 8, 2002 I don't think we HAVE to move to electric cars. Cars CAN run on corn oil, you know. Biomass fuel is the oldest in the world, and it doesn't create any new carbon for the atmosphere. It, Hydrogen, they're all solutions. But cars aren't the whole deal. If people would just start using push mowers if they could, and things like that. More energy efficent lightbulbs and insulation. Just less fucking oil, less fucking hydrocarbons. The sooner the better people. Someone please tell me a good reason to avoid leaving the oil-based industry.
