The Makers of 7 UP Literally Turn Things

Upside Down With the Introduction of dnL

PLANO, TEXAS, Sept. 5, 2002 – 7 UP turned the cola world upside down in 1967 when it introduced its famous "UNcola" marketing and advertising campaign, which featured the crisp, clear taste of 7 UP in an upside-down cola glass.  Today, the makers of 7 UP are once again turning things upside down with the introduction of a new soft drink called dnL.

Beginning in November, dnL will offer consumers a strong, full-flavored carbonated soft drink.  Being the "upside-down" 7 UP, the new product will be bright green in color, will include caffeine and will feature a blend of fruit flavors.

"We've literally turned 7 UP upside down to come up with this new product," said Doug Tough, president and chief executive officer for Dr Pepper/Seven Up, Inc.  "We've added caffeine, a new twist in flavor, a vibrant color and a clever name to provide consumers with a kick of irreverent energy."

Targeted to teens and young adults, dnL initially will be available in clear 20-ounce bottles in select markets only.  Beginning in January, distribution of the 20-ounce package will be expanded nationally.  Take-home packaging, including 12-packs and 2-liters, are set to roll out in April 2003.

Marketing support for dnL also will literally be turned upside down.  For example, non-traditional grassroots advertising and marketing programs will incorporate an "upside-down" perspective.  In addition, dnL will be supported with point-of-sale materials, merchandising pieces, cold drink programs and sampling initiatives centered on the "upside-down" theme.

"Over the past two years, consumers have demonstrated that they want new and different beverages to choose from, and we believe dnL will be a way to satisfy the changing tastes of America," said Tough.  "In fact, consumer research was key in determining the name and flavor profile for dnL, which was well-received by the teen and young adult target who tested the new product.  Overall, we believe we have an exciting new soft drink in dnL, which consumers will enjoy discovering for themselves."

dnL is part of the extensive soft drink portfolio of Plano, Texas-based Dr Pepper/Seven Up, Inc., which is the largest division of London-based beverage and confectionery firm Cadbury Schweppes plc (NYSE: CSG).  Dr Pepper/Seven Up, Inc. is the largest non-cola soft drink enterprise in North America, with about 16 percent of the carbonated soft drink market.  In addition to dnL, the company's other leading brands include

Dr Pepper, 7 UP, A&W Root Beer, Canada Dry, Sunkist, Schweppes, Squirt and Hawaiian Punch, as well as the RC Cola and Slush Puppie brands.

I gotta say, "dnL" is pretty creative.

I saw a bottle of it at the gas station, it looked like mountain dew. I didn't bother, though.

It's got to be better than blue pepsi, at least.
