Guest converge241 Posted November 7, 2002 Report Posted November 7, 2002 I meant Barry Zito (watched too much OZ on the box set sorry) Pedro second Lowe third official announcement will be @ 2pm
Guest Kingpk Posted November 7, 2002 Report Posted November 7, 2002 Pedro skipping his last start really hurt him. The sad thing is, it was against the Devil Rays, so you know it would have helped him immensly. Zito got 17 1st place votes, apparently.
Guest Leena Posted November 7, 2002 Report Posted November 7, 2002 It's bullshit that Pedro didn't win. He had by far the best stats, he's the best pitcher, give him the damn award.
Guest treble charged Posted November 7, 2002 Report Posted November 7, 2002 Roy Halladay didn't even get one measly point?!?! BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Guest jimmy no nose Posted November 7, 2002 Report Posted November 7, 2002 I really think Pedro was the better pitcher and should have won, but if he did we wouldn't have a topic called Chuck Zito.
Guest El Hijo Del Lunatic Posted November 7, 2002 Report Posted November 7, 2002 Good for Barry Zito. He had the best year out of anybody last year. Is Pedro the better pitcher? Yeah. But Zito had the better year. Here's why: In Barry Zito's last ten starts, he was 8-0 with a 2.03 ERA. He was, without a doubt, the best pitcher down the stretch last year. Pedro? In the entire month of September, he only pitched 17 innings. IN A PENNANT RACE. Without Barry Zito, the A's don't make the playoffs. With Pedro Martinez (and Derek Lowe, for that matter), the Red Sox still finish 10 1/2 games back of the Yankees. Am I the only one who doesn't want a Cy Young winner whose heart we have to question? LUNATIC - When I'm too drunk to walk, I rock a party on crutches.
Guest Kingpk Posted November 8, 2002 Report Posted November 8, 2002 It's bullshit that Pedro didn't win. He had by far the best stats, he's the best pitcher, give him the damn award. 1) Zito's team made the playoffs. I know it shouldn't matter, but writers are like that. 2) Zito pitched his ass off while the Athletics were trying to hold off Anaheim and Seattle. The Sox were done by August. In close races, people take stuff like this into consideration. The fact that Pedro "shut it down" before the season ended for the second year in a row didn't help his case.
Guest Leena Posted November 8, 2002 Report Posted November 8, 2002 I don't really think it was close... with the most important statistic. Martinez 2.26 ERA Zito 2.75 A half a run is a pretty big discrepancy. Also, Martinez had 70 more K's, while throwing 30 less innings. Fenway is also much friendlier hitters' park. Yes, Martinez did miss the last month of the season, but he still pitched enough... 200 innings. I do think Zito's performance for a playoff team is a part of why he won... but I think it's more a case of "Let's give it to someone other than Pedro."
Guest Kingpk Posted November 8, 2002 Report Posted November 8, 2002 I just think Lowe should have gotten at least 1 first place vote. He should get Comeback Player of the Year, though.
Guest alkeiper Posted November 8, 2002 Report Posted November 8, 2002 In all likelyhood, Martinez was hurt most by Derek Lowe. Those two split votes while Barry Zito raked them in. No argument here though about the award.
Guest Y2BigJ Posted November 9, 2002 Report Posted November 9, 2002 I think Pedro should have gotten the award, but really with the year Zito had you really can't argue with the decision.
