Superman 5

...and it's positive? OK, there's massive spoilers in here, so I'm just gonna link to it.

Superman 5 script review at Coming Attractions

I will say this in that it's a much easier read than the one on Harry Knowles site. Nitpicking about website layouts aside, I still don't agree that it's a good script in terms of depicting Superman. Sure, it probably makes for a decent movie, but it upon reading this it doesn't FEEL like a Superman movie. I really don't know what it feels like, but it seems like Abrams wrote a script, and then later on wove in the Superman stuff and sold the WB execs on it.

What do you guys think?

I agree. I'm not a big Superman fan, and when I read it I thought "this would be a decent superhero movie." But as a SuperMAN movie, it sucks beyond belief. So much deviation from the source material it borders on blasphemy. It's...just...wrong.

I liked how the reviewer is kissing the script's ass the whole way through but then says it won't be as good as the Batman movies. If you can't beat those things then why are you even trying?

(What follows are the opinions of a friend of mine who knows more about Superman than I do and makes several excellent points.)

"Well, this doesn't sound too bad, but it still sucks. They're so trying to make him Spider-Man. It's pathetic. All of a sudden, Superman's a miracle or a manace? Clark Kent is shy and introverted? He has no intentions of being a hero until he's forced to? I mean once you get past how it toally fucks over Superman's story, and its an awful idea...the cheap ass garnering of Spidey's popularity is disgusting.

Lets just be honest. Yeah, Superman was probably weird as a teenager, but he wasnt shy and introverted. Hell, how can you be when you're six foot five and muscle bound?

I'm sorry, but anyone who can just lift a car off the ground and toss it around usually doesn't have to be forced into saving a kid falling out of a window or a car skidding off the road.

Ya know, so far the best interpretation I've seen of Superman is that Smallville show, excluding Superman: The Movie.

Oh, speaking of Spidey rip offs, dig the ending:

"Supes gets to go back to Lois. It’s bittersweet, though, as he tells her he must return to his home planet and save his people. They confess their love for one another and Lois, briefly, wonders if the timorous Clark might be something (or someone) else entirely."

-Man's got a point.

Smallville's Clark Kent *is* shy and introverted in regards to dealing with the public and handling confrontation. In the comic book, the revamped Clark Kent was a high school star who also excelled beyond any in his class at academics. He was popular and knew how to hone and control his powers at an early age so that he did not hurt any innocent bystanders with them.

Warner just needs to bite the bullet and let DC comics writer Jeph Loeb write the new Superman movie script like he said he would have liked to had he been offered the chance.

Just give it up guys. Everyone and their mother has seen the old Superman movies and they will always think that the new Superman movie is a continuation of the series. Give in and make the sequel with Brainiac that you promised to make with Superman 3. You have the technology and knowledge to make one of the most visually appealing Superman movies ever. But find a goddamn writer who isn't a clueless imbecile about Superman.

Idiots.

I always felt that the Punisher movie was worse than the Captain America movie. At least in Cap's movie you knew it was him while if you watched the Punisher movie without the opening credits, you wouldn't even know it was him until half way into the movie. I liked Dolph and felt that he did the best job he could in that movie that was as humanly possible. But there was just too much disregard for the character's material and a total lack of interesting action scenes in the movie as well which should have been the saving grace of the movie.

Agreed. I mean, WHERE WAS THE SKULL? Hello?!? When anyone thinks of the Punisher, they think of the big white skull on his shirt. So of course, the thing that's missing is the big white skull. I also hated the redeem-my-missing-partner aspect of the movie (which went against the Punisher's history, and wasted Lou Gossett). It's easy to see why it was a direct-to-video release. I saw the DVD for $5.99 in Target recently, but felt even that was too much to pay.

I'd like to see a new Punisher movie made, based off of the Ennis material.

Geez WB just go ahead and use Kevin Smith's script. At least he PAYS ATTENTION TO THE HISTORY! Sure it's somewhat self-referential (if, indeed, it's the script I've seen floating around) but you can tell Kev appreciates the Superman mystique. The two that have been reviewed sound like total crap.

Your friend hit it on the head. That's what I was trying to express but didn't find the right words for it. Basically they've filled Superman with angst, and he's never had that. Part of the appeal is that he's an alien, yet has been raised with downhome American values. He's got all these super...er metahuman powers, but when it comes down to it he's a huge (foster)momma's boy. He's an average joe, with above-average powers.

And count me in on the Punisher being worse than Captain America. At least Cap had the costume and the Red Skull, even if he was Italian...

It's not a rumor, it should be out next fall.

I vote for Punisher being better. It depends on how you look at it. Do you want a better movie or a better translation? Punisher wasn't a terrible movie. It was a decent 80's action revenge type of movie. Both of the Captain America movies had the suit right and stuff like that but the movies themselves were just terrible.

Neither one can reach the greatness of the Fantastic Four movie of course.

STILL have to watch that one. And my bootleg videotape is RIGHT THERE waiting for me to bask in the glow of it's wretchedness.

Maybe we should include telemovies in the "worst" category. In which case I'd nominate the JLA pilot (with David Odgen Stiers as J'onn J'onzz) as worst ever.

The Punisher movie has been given no set date because they still have not found someone who will play him. Rumors have had everyone from the Rock to Eric Bana as Punny but nothing for sure.

Bana would be a nice choice as he has the build of Castle along with the facial features. Let Bana grow out a stubble and you have your Punisher.

JLA was hilarious. They should've made it into a sitcom. That's pretty much what it was. The entire Justice League lived together like Friends or something. The best part was Flash getting fired from the post office for being too fast.
