Guest Incandenza Report post Posted November 12, 2002 So, I'm fresh off of making my second ever on air apperance on college radio, and marking the debut of my "speciality" show, Pornography for the Audiophile. Most of you that have bothered to click into this thread are likely familiar with my musical tastes, so little of what I played--presented here--should surprise you: Pulp--"Common People" PJ Harvey--"Long Snake Moan" Guided by Voices--"The Official Ironmen Rally Song" Red House Painters--"San Geronimo" Sparklehorse--"King of Nails" Material Issue--"Valerie Loves Me" Basehead--"Play with Toys" Brutal Juice--"Kentucky Fuck Daddy" (I had to make a note in the official log that, in spite of its title, it is a clean song) Uncle Tupelo--"I Wanna Be Your Dog" Leonard Cohen--"Tonight Will Be Fine" Harvey Danger--"Meetings with Remarkable Men" Elvis Costello & the Attractions--"I Hope You're Happy Now" Tom Waits--"Time" A lack of time--I only had an hour--forced me to scrap my planned closer, Death Cab for Cutie's "Company Calls." As it stands, the Waits song was a fitting end.
Guest LooseCannon Report post Posted November 12, 2002 I'm pretty unfamiliar with half of that list, but it looks good. I feel like DJ Jeff with that line. Out of curiousity, which Death Cab for Cutie album would you recommend as a starting point for a prospective enthusiast such as myself?
Guest Kinetic Report post Posted November 12, 2002 To the best of my knowledge, I've only heard two of those songs. But I guess their relative obscurity would be the point in playing them, wouldn't it?
Guest LooseCannon Report post Posted November 12, 2002 I've heard songs 2-4, before. That's it.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted November 12, 2002 Uncle Tupelo--"I Wanna Be Your Dog" Wasn't that an Iggy Pop song?
Guest Incandenza Report post Posted November 12, 2002 Cannon--We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes is the finest Death Cab moment, and a fine place to start. Agent--Technically, it was an Iggy and the Stooges song. It is a cover. EDIT: Oh, and I am aware some of the stuff is really obscure, particularly the Basehead, Material Issue and Brutal Juice songs. Knowledge of those acts requires a familiarity with what was playing on MTV's 120 Minutes back in the early-to-mid 90s. The albums from which I culled the Basehead and Brutal Juice songs are both out of print (which is especially a shame for Basehead, as Play with Toys is one of my favorite discs of the 90s); the Material Issue is still in print, I believe, but awfully hard to find. Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted November 12, 2002 I think I've got Fun House sitting around here somewhere, I know that track's not on there or anything, but still, I haven't listened to that album in forever. I remember liking the title track and TV Eye a lot for whatever reason.
Guest Flyboy Report post Posted November 12, 2002 I haven't heard any of those songs, but I'll download some of them, right now. Especially the Elvis Costello one... I downloaded "Alison" and I fell in love with it.
Guest goodhelmet Report post Posted November 12, 2002 Pulp--"Common People" PJ Harvey--"Long Snake Moan" i'm really interested in hearing how you segued the two songs together.oh and seeing sparklehorse and harvey danger on there brought a smile to my face. i still think you could have included a better GBV song but beggars can't be choosers. ALSO, how can someone hear your radio program?
Guest Incandenza Report post Posted November 12, 2002 i'm really interested in hearing how you segued the two songs together I simply played them one after another. Prior to heading off to the station, I grabbed about twenty or so CDs with no clear idea of what I would end up playing. It wasn't until about 15 minutes before I went on the air that I hammered out a set list. I thought Pulp's "Common People'''s anthemic feel would make for a fine start to the show, but there was no real logic to following it with Harvey's "Long Snake Moan." Sometime down the road, I'll probably work out more thematic elements to my playlist, but right now I'm happy with it being random. oh and seeing sparklehorse and harvey danger on there brought a smile to my face. Glad to know. Have you heard any of Harvey Danger's 2nd disc, King James Version? I intro'ed the song by stating it was a shame that everyone stopped paying attention to them after "Flagpole Sitta." i still think you could have included a better GBV song but beggars can't be choosers. Blasphemy. "The Official Ironmen Rally Song" is easily among the very best of Bob Pollard's greatest pop nuggets. ALSO, how can someone hear your radio program? Alas, one was once able to hear it online, but the law presently dictates that you must pay to play music over the internet. However, the station manager is toying with broadcasting on the sly. I'll be sure to keep youse guys informed. As it stands, you have to be on campus.
Guest Flyboy Report post Posted November 12, 2002 Elvis Costello & the Attractions--"I Hope You're Happy Now" I've been searching for that MP3, and I *still* can't find it anywhere. Damnit.
Guest Incandenza Report post Posted November 12, 2002 Strange. I'd think the Rhino reissue version from earlier this year would be easy to find.
Guest goodhelmet Report post Posted November 12, 2002 fortunately, i was able to download almost his entire catalog before audiogalaxy went under. unfortunately, i only kept like 20 songs. that's the relationship i have with elvis... indifference and obsession.
Guest Incandenza Report post Posted November 12, 2002 But if Flyboy can't find something that should be as simple to locate as E.C's "I Hope You're Happy Now," some of the other stuff I played must be impossible to track down.
Guest goodhelmet Report post Posted November 12, 2002 that was the tragedy of audiogalaxy going under. i was able to pick up some really obscure or hard to find music from almost any era. for more contemporary-billboard stuff, i used kazaa. what is even more depressing is that the original napster satisfied both needs as for your previous comment about GBV, i had over 300 minutes of their songs downloaded from audiogalaxy. i kept about 75. depressing, now that i think of it. Guest Flyboy Report post Posted November 12, 2002 for more contemporary-billboard stuff, i used kazaa. what is even more depressing is that the original napster satisfied both needs I use Kazaa most of the time, but lately it's been shooting me in the foot. Can't find that much E.C. on there (well, not the ones I want), so it's pissing me off. I would use WinMX, but the songs take forever to download even with a cable connection, so I don't bother. Guest The Amazing Rando Report post Posted November 13, 2002 For what it's worth.... Material Issue was a great band that not many people have heard of... the band International Pop Overthrow got their name after the first Material Issue album title and were looked at as a defining member of the power pop and "power emo" genre before their lead singer Tim Ellison commited suicide in late 96 or early 97...I can't remember when... I reccommend them highly...
Guest goodhelmet Report post Posted November 13, 2002 i liked material issue but tended to lump them into a category of other nameless-faceless bands like dramarama and dada.
Guest Incandenza Report post Posted November 13, 2002 Jim Ellison, not Tim. He killed himself in '96. Their most well known song was the one I played, "Valerie Loves Me" (it has one of the greatest/shortest choruses of any song in the 90s; if you've heard it, you'll know what I mean) And yeah, even if Ellison hadn't committed suicide, the band would still be just as relevant as any other power pop group from the same era. Guest goodhelmet Report post Posted November 13, 2002 by the way, inc., have you ever heard of a band called god'schild? sort of a pseudo grunge-psychedelic-doors thing going? they had a minor radio hit with a song called "everybody's 1" then disappeared in to the darkness. really killer album if you can find it anywhere.
Guest Incandenza Report post Posted November 13, 2002 The name rings a bell, but that could be that I'm thinking of all the bands who've ever put "god" in their name.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted November 13, 2002 I wish I had a radio show...at least an online radio show... That'd be cool as fuck. Mostly metal and punk and hardcore, with the occasional toss-in of Billy Joel.
Guest goodhelmet Report post Posted November 13, 2002 corey, i never would have guessed you listened to billy joel! good to see you open up your musical horizons.

Guest Incandenza Report post Posted November 16, 2002 BUMP I was working on some ideas for possible theme shows in the future, and they're a bitch to come up with, lemme tell ya. I was able to find enough stuff in my collection to do a whole hour of instrumentals, were I so inclined (I'll be taking some short cuts, though; I'd probably play one of the 20 minute tracks from Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, as well as this 10.5 minute Yo La Tengo one). Guest Flyboy Report post Posted November 16, 2002 I wish I had a radio show...at least an online radio show... Live365 was the place to go before the bastards started to charge for hosting your station. I doubt it has changed, now, but you can check.
Guest Kinetic Report post Posted November 16, 2002 I'd be worried about that getting sort of dull.
Guest Incandenza Report post Posted November 16, 2002 Eh. I don't know if/when I'd do it, but it's an idea.
Guest Flyboy Report post Posted November 16, 2002 Inc., Whenever your next show is (after this one.. Sunday, right?), you could have a block of heart-broken songs. Start it off with E.C.'s "I Want You", and you're good to go.
Guest Incandenza Report post Posted November 16, 2002 It's Monday, and that's a good idea. I could easily come up with an hour's worth of stuff.
