Guest Invader3k Report post Posted November 13, 2002 Getting widescreen DVDs now is the smarter way to go because within the next four years widescreen HDTVs will become much more affordable. Don't forget that by January 1st, 2006, every TV station will be broadcasting in HD (at least that is what the FCC has mandated). Your widescreen DVDs will fit perfectly on the newer TVs, meaning no black bars (or at least very small black bars).
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted November 13, 2002 SW Ep 2 In Wide or Full Screen at Wal Mart was $9.87. I was tempted, but remember I hate Star Wars.

That doesn't really matter because all those widescreen TV let's you watch whatever ratio you want. If you watch full screen it simply puts black bars at the side instead the top or bottom like letterboxing. And most widescreen DVDs are STILL more widescreen than the TVs are. Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted November 14, 2002 That's because DVDs are kind enough to present the films in their original aspect ratio so we can see everything that the director intended. Fullscreen is anti-art!
Guest starvenger Report post Posted November 14, 2002 However there's no reason why a 20" tv should be considered too small for widescreen unless the person is half blind. Well, since you mentioned it, my perscription would indicate that I'm pretty close to it... OK, I feel somewhat guilty for partaking in the widescreen/fullscreen debate, so I'll try to get back on topic. I went to my local Toys R Us, and they were sold out. But they DID give me a flyer and point me to WalMart, which of course has a low price guarantee. Sure enough, when I got into the WalMart, there was a GIANT stand of Star Wars DVDs, priced at $14.97. Unfortunately, they were all FULLscreen (blue bar at the top). Still, I headed to the DVD section to see if they had locked any away, and sure enough, there was the coveted widescreen DVDs (gold bar). Head to the checkout, showed them the flyer, and one pricematch later, I've got my $10 Star Wars DVD. I guess the lesson learned here is this: I'm a cheap bastard.
