Video Review

WWF Survivor Series 1999

By Simon Mulvaney

Nov 15, 2002

- Here's the final Survivor Series review in my series of four that I have recently posted. This time it's the 1999 edition, when the WWF made a BIG mistake, if you know what I mean...

- A nice little video package opens the show.

- Live from Detroit.

- Your hosts are Jerry Lawler & Jim Ross.

- Godfather, D-Lo Brown & Head Bangers vs. Dudley Boyz & Acolytes - Mosh and Bubba Dudley start things off. They trade hammerlocks and Bubba knocks down Mosh. Mosh comes back with a back bodydrop. Bubba hits a clothesline and then tags in D-Von Dudley. D-Von beats on Mosh for a bit but Mosh gains control and tags in Thrasher. Thrasher hits a clothesline for two. He gets a chinbreaker but D-Von comes back with a clothesline. D-Von stomps away and Bradshaw tags himself in. Bradshaw gets a dropkick and a back bodydrop but Bradshaw comes back and hits the Clothesline From Hell to eliminate Thrasher. Mosh comes in with a crossbody for a two count. Bradshaw tags in Faarooq and they double-team Mosh for a two count. Mosh gets a dropkick but Faarooq comes back and tags in D-Von. D-Von hammers Mosh but misses a charge and Mosh gains control. Mosh throws D-Von off the ropes, but D-Von makes a blind tag to Bubba and they hit Mosh with a 3D to eliminate him. D-Lo Brown comes in and gets a scoopslam and a legdrop for two. D-Lo hammers Bubba in the corner and Bradshaw grabs a chair. Bradshaw comes into the ring and whacks D-Lo and Bubba with the chair for no reason. What the hell was that about? Talk about pointless. Anyway, Bradshaw is gone and D-Von and Faarooq argue about who is going to make the cover. So they turn on each other. They brawl up the aisle and are counted out. It's Bubba against Godfather & D-Lo. Bubba hits a sideslam on D-Lo for two. Bubba hammers away but D-Lo gets a Sky High for two. D-Lo takes control and goes for a hurricarna from the top but Bubba reverses it into a super powerbomb for two. They both go for clotheslines and both men go down. D-Lo get the tag and Godfather goes to work and hit the Ho-Train. Godfather tags in D-Lo and he gets the Lo-Down (Frog Splash) for the win at 9:35. Winners: Godfather & D-Lo Brown. It was OK but it wasn't great or anything. *1/2

- A very cheesy, but funny, Kurt Angle promo is shown.

- Shawn Stasiak vs. Kurt Angle - This is Kurt Angle's debut. Angle hits a fireman's carry to start. Angle gets a side headlock and a headscissors. The crowd begin to chant "Boring!" and the match has only been going for 30 seconds. Jeez! Anyway, Angle grabs a front facelock but Stasiak reverses it to a hammerlock which Angle reverses. The crowd start to chant for the Red Wings. Stasiak knocks down Angle with a shoulderblock but Angle gets an overhead belly-to-belly suplex. Angle misses a clothesline but Stasiak gets one of his own and stomps on Angle. Stasiak gets a sideslam and a suplex for a two count. Stasiak hammers away and get two from an elbow. Stasiak hits the chinlock. Angle fights out of it and knocks down Stasiak. Angle goes to outside and grabs a microphone and tells the crowd "You do not boo an Olympic gold medallist." Sounds words of advice from Kurt. Back in, Stasiak hammers on Angle but he comes back with a dropkick. Stasiak comes back with another chinlock. Angle fight out of it again but is knocked down with a shoulderblock. You know, Stasiak isn't too bad. Really! Angle hits a power slam for two. Stasiak goes for a splash from the top but Angle moves and hits what would later become know as the Olympic Slam for the pin at 5:57. Winner: Kurt Angle. Short and not bad. ** The crowd boo Angle after the match.

- Val Venis, Mark Henry, Gangrel & Steve Blackman vs. WWF European Champion British Bulldog & Mean Street Posse - Val Venis and the British Bulldog start things off. Bulldog gets hammered by Venis and makes the tag to Pete Gas but he tags straight back out to the Bulldog. What's the point in that? Venis goes for a suplex but gets overpowered by the Bulldog who gets a suplex of his own. Bulldog tags in Pete Gas again. Pete slingshots Val into the corner and gets a suplex for two. Pete kicks Val in the corner but Venis takes over with a bulldog. Val tags in Steve Blackman and Pete gets hammered. Blackman throws Pete into the ropes and hits him with his big kick move, does it have a proper name?, to eliminate Pete. Rodney comes in and gets a clothesline on Blackman. Blackman knocks Rodney down and then tags in Gangrel. Gangrel hammers Rodent in the corner but Rodney manages to get a crucifix for a two count. Gangrel fights back and Joey Abs manages to nail Rodney by mistake allowing Gangrel to hit the Impaler to eliminate him. It's not going well for the Posse. Joey Abs comes in and gets a suplex for two. Gangrel hits a suplex and then tags in Mark Henry who beats on Abs for a bit. Joey fights back but it's short lived as Henry hits Abs with a splash to eliminate him. So it's four-on-one now. Bulldog comes in and gets thrown about by Henry. He tags in Gangrel and goes to top but Bulldog stops that and hits a superplex on Gangrel to get rid of him. Blackman comes in and hits a backbreaker. Blackman gets a suplex and a rollup for two. Bulldog comes back with a fisherman's suplex and eliminates Blackman. Venis comes in and hits Bulldog with a clothesline. Bulldog gets a sunset flip for a two count. Henry comes in and they double-team Bulldog but he manages to fight back. Venis gets a cradle for two. Bulldog throws Venis out of the ring and Henry comes in, that isn't legal, and hit Bulldog with a scoopslam and a splash and then Venis hits the Money Shot to finish at 9:07. Winners: Val Venis & Mark Henry. Pretty dull, but at least it was short. 1/2*

- Mae Young, Fabulous Moolah, Tori & Debra vs. Jacqueline, Luna, Terri & WWF Women's Champion Ivory - This match is being fought under "sudden death" rules. It should be noted that both Debra and Terri, the non-wrestler members of each team, get the loudest pops proving that nobody cares about the WWF's women's division. Considering all of it is in the ring it's a bad thing. Moolah and Mae Young attack Ivory to start. Jim Ross notes that this match "may not be a Survivor Series classic". Thanks for the tip Jim. In the ring Tori takes down Luna. Luna makes the tag to Jacqueline and the double suplex Tori. Jacqueline hits a snapmare and then tags in Luna. Luna beats on Tori and then makes the tag to Ivory. Tori clotheslines the both of them and I don't know what the hell is going on anymore. Anyway, Mae and Moolah hit the double clothesline on Ivory and Moolah gets the pin at 1:50. Winners: Mae Young, Fabulous Moolah, Tori & Debra. Thank God that's over. DUD After the match Debra rips Terri's top off.

- A promo for WWF.com is shown.

- Backstage Lillian Garcia interviews X-Pac.

- X-Pac vs. Kane - Kane gets a pretty good pop coming down to the ring. X-Pac jump Kane before the bell to start. X-Pac hammers away but it has no effect on Kane. Kane misses a charge to the corner and X-Pac gets his kicks in. Kane regains control and beats on X-Pac. Kane goes to the top but X-Pac kicks him off to the floor. X-Pac hits an elbow from the apron and rams Kane into the steps. They brawl on the outside for a bit. Back in, X-Pac kicks away and hits a spinkick. Kane sits up and X-Pac hits him with another. X-Pac goes for the broncobuster but Kane catches X-Pac coming in and nails him with a backbreaker. Kane knocks X-Pac down with a big boot and hits a flying clothesline from the top. Kane hits the chokeslam. He goes for the cover but Road Dogg pulls him out at two. Kane takes out Road Dogg on the outside. Back in, X-Pac gets an X-Factor for two. X-Pac goes to the top but Kane catches him coming down and goes for the Tombstone. However, Triple H comes in and hits Kane with the WWF Championship for the DQ at 4:17. Winner: Kane. That was rather short but it was good for what it was. ** After the match DX set Kane up for the broncobuster but X-Pac ends up spinkicking Tori down instead.

- Backstage Michael Cole interviews The Rock. Triple H interrupts and they get into a brawl.

- Prince Albert, Mideon, Viscera & WWF Hardcore Champion Big Bossman vs. Big Show - Big Show actually gets a decent pop on his way out. Blimey! Big Show comes in and cleans house on the heels. Big Show gives Mideon the Showstopper 15 seconds in and he's gone. Next it's Prince Albert who gets the same. Viscera comes in and gets slammed and then given the Showstopper to eliminate him. Big Bossman decides to run instead and gets counted out at 1:24. Winner: Big Show. Pointless crap. DUD After the match Big Show chases after the Big Bossman.

- A promo for the next pay-per-view, Armageddon, is shown.

- Backstage Kevin Kelly interviews Stone Cold Steve Austin. Triple H interrupts this one as well and gets a pasting from Austin. Triple H manages to lure Austin to the parking lot. Suddenly a car comes out of nowhere and runs down Austin or, rather, Austin's stunt double. Jim Ross goes out to check on him and the EMT's arrive and carry Austin into an ambulance and out of the arena.

- WWF Intercontinental Championship Match: WWF Intercontinental Champion Chyna vs. Chris Jericho - Jericho gets a big pop with his entrance. Chyna's entrance music is really crappy. Anyway, they brawl to start with Jericho getting the advantage. Jericho shoves down Miss Kitty but he get clotheslined down by Chyna. They brawl on the outside for a bit and Jericho get thrown into the steps. Jericho grabs a cord and chokes Chyna with it on the outside. Back in, Jericho hammers on Chyna in the corner. Chyna regains control with a hotshot and a dropkick. Jericho gets a waistlock but Chyna reverses. Jericho hits a lowblow to get out of it but it has no effect on Chyna and she hits him with a huricarana. Chyna stomps Jericho in the corner. Chyna tries to whip Jericho to the corner but he reverses it and send her to the outside. Jericho hits a springboard bodyblock to the outside and throws Chyna onto the announce table. Jericho pours a bottle of water over Chyna's head and calls her a "filthy, disgusting slut". Jericho removes some of the padding from the barrier and throws Chyna into it. Back in, Jericho goes to the top and hits a missile dropkick for a two count. Jericho takes Chyna down with a series of kneelifts and that gets a two count also. Jericho goes for a slam but Chyna reverses it into a pin for a two count. Jericho comes back with kicks to the ribs and hits a suplex for two. Chyna comes back with some right hands and tries to whip Jericho to the corner. Jericho reverses it and hits a bulldog. The crowd actually booed Chyna (the face) when she regained control and cheered Jericho (the heel) when he hit the bulldog. Didn't this tell the WWF something? Anyway, Jericho hits slingshot bodysplash for two. Jericho hits an elbow and then clotheslines Chyna out of the ring. Jericho follows her out and kisses Miss Kitty. Big pop for that. Jericho stomps on Chyna and Kitty jumps on his back to stop him. Jericho throws her off and Chyna hits a spear. Big boos for that. Chyna whips Jericho into the ringpost. Back in, Jericho comes back with a powerbomb for two. Jericho acts pissed at the referee for not getting the three and then misses a Lionsault on Chyna. Chyna kick away and hits an elbow and a clothesline. Chyna hits a springboard elbow and then a DDT for a two count. Chyna stomps Jericho in the corner but the referee get bumped and Jericho grabs the Intercontinental Championship and smacks Chyna in the face with it for two. Jericho stomps on Chyna but she manages to hit a Pedigree but it only gets two. The crowd is going nuts. Chyna goes for a huricarana but it gets reversed to the Walls of Jericho. Chyna manages to grab the ropes and the crowd boos. Jericho sets up Chyna for a superplex but it's reversed to a Pedigree from the top to get the pin at 13:45. Winner: Chyna. I didn't think I was going to like that match but it wasn't too bad. ***

- Backstage Shane McMahon tells Triple H that the triple threat main event is still on.

- Hardcore & Crash Holly & Too Cool vs. Edge & Christian & Hardy Boyz - Scotty 2 Hotty and Edge start things off. Scotty hammers Edge in the corner while Grandmaster Sexay laughs away. Edge gains control and throws Scotty over the top rope. Scotty lands on the apron and flips back in but Edge hits him with a leg lariat. Scotty makes the tag to Crash Holly and he get taken down with a drop toe hold. Edge tags in Matt Hardy and they double team him for a two count. Matt hits a suplex which gets another two. Matt crotches Crash and then knocks him to the outside. He follows that up with a dive to the outside. Grandmaster comes in and nails Matt with a powerbomb from the apron. Christian nails him from the top to the outside. Scotty follows that up with a somersault dive from the apron onto Christian. Back in, Hardcore Holly and Jeff Hardy go at it. All eight guys brawl on the outside. Back in, Christian hits a powerslam on Crash for two. Don't ask me what's going on with the referee. The legal men should be Crash and Matt. Oh well, what ya going to do. Hardcore and Crash double-team Christian for a two count. Christian nails Hardcore with a kick but Hardcore comes back with a clothesline and tags in Grandmaster. Grandmaster goes to work on Christian in the corner. Grandmaster get a bulldog for two. Grandmaster puts on his goggles and tries an other bulldog but gets thrown into the corner. Now Edge and Hardcore get tagged in and Hardcore gets speared and so does Crash. It turns into chaos again with guy fighting on both the inside and the outside of the ring. In the ring Hardcore manages to rollup Edge to eliminate him. Hardcore tags out to Scotty who hits a DDT coming off the top rope on Matt to eliminate him. Jeff comes in and beats on Scotty. Jeff gets a sunset flip for two. Scotty works over Jeff for a bit and hit the Worm. Grandmaster is going crazy on the apron. With laughter that is. Grandmaster gets tagged in and they hit Jeff with a double powerbomb for two. Grandmaster beats on Jeff for a bit. Grandmaster hits a missile dropkick for a two count. Scotty gets the tag and they double team him for two. Hardcore & Crash come in and start to argue. Once again it's chaos in the ring. Why do they even bother having a referee in this match? Jeff manages to hit a 450 splash on Scotty to eliminate him. Christian and Jeff double-team Crash for two. Hardcore puts a stop to the double-teaming with a missile dropkick and Grandmaster comes off the top with a legdrop on Jeff to eliminate him. So it's three-on-one. Christian sneaks up on Grandmaster and hits him with a reverse DDT to eliminate him. Hardcore comes in and hits a suplex. Hardcore & Crash double-team Christian for two. Crash hammers on Christian in the corner for a bit and then tags in Hardcore. More double-teaming ensues and finally the referee decides to take control. It's a bit late for that. Hardcore hits a powerslam on Christian for two and then gets a backbreaker for another two count. Crash tags in Christian manages to regain control and hits Crash with the Unprettier to eliminate him. Hardcore comes in and throws Crash out. Christian goes for a victory roll but Hardcore reverses it to get the winning pin at 14:25. Winner: Hardcore Holly. That's was a good little match. ***1/4

- WWF Tag Team Championship Match: WWF Tag Team Champions New Age Outlaws vs. Mankind & Al Snow - Mankind and Billy Gunn start thing off. They lockup and Bill gains control and hammers away on Mankind in the corner. Billy gets a neckbreaker a two count. Billy continues to beat on Mankind and then gets a sleeper. They brawl to the outside and Road Dogg comes over to beat on Mankind but he ends up nailing Billy instead. Back in, Road Dogg and Al Snow come in. Snow gains control and hammers on Road Dogg in the corner and then knocks him down with a clothesline. Snow gets a suplex for two. Mankind tags in and he beats down the Road Dogg in the corner. Mankind throws Road Dogg outside and Snow whacks Road Dogg with a chair and then Mankind does the same. Back in, Mankind continues to beat on Road Dogg. Mankind slaps on a chinlock. This is pretty dull, it must be said. Snow tags in and he stomps on Road Dogg in the corner. Mankind tags in and the boring beatdown continues on. Mankind gets a kneelift on Road Dogg for two. Snow tags in and Road Dogg gets some shots but Snow gets in some headbutts but that gets reversed and Road Dogg knocks down Snow. Mankind stops Road Dogg making a tag and it turn into chaos as all four men battle it out all over the place. It appears that Gunn and Snow are the legal men despite the fact that the referee didn't see the Outlaws tag. Oh well. The Outlaws work over Snow now. And so the tables turn but the boredom continues on. Snow comes back with a clothesline and both men are down. Both men make the tag and Mankind and Billy Gunn come in. All four men brawl again and Billy gets a Fameasser on Mankind for a two count. Another brawl and Mankind gets a double-arm DDT on Billy and Snow gets the Snow Plough on Road Dogg. Mankind goes for Mr. Socko on both the Outlaws. Snow whacks Billy with Head and that gets two. Road Dogg disposes of Snow and back in the Outlaws get a spike piledriver for the pin at 14:00. Winners: New Age Outlaws. Complete rubbish. 1/2*

- WWF Championship Match: WWF Champion Triple H vs. The Rock vs. Big Show - Triple H and Rock hammer on the Big Show to start but he knocks them both down with a double clothesline. Show goes for the Showstopper on Triple H but Rock breaks it up. Triple H hammers on Big Show in the corner for a bit. Big Show reverses that but Rock goes to work on Show and knocks him to the outside. Inside Rock and Triple H go at it until Show drags The Rock out of the ring. Big Show gets posted by The Rock and then Triple H comes off the apron and attacks The Rock. All three men brawl on the outside for a bit. Back in, Show goes to work on Triple H in the corner. Rock comes in and hits a Russian legsweep on Show and then throws Triple H out of the ring. Rock gets for the People's Elbow and then the cover but it gets broken up by Triple H. Triple H works over The Rock in the corner. Triple H goes after the Show but Rock attacks him and gets a spinebuster. Show gets a sideslam on Rock. Show puts Triple H out of the ring and beats on him on the aisle. Show throws Triple H into a rail but The Rock knocks down Show with a clothesline. All three guys brawl in the aisle for a bit with all of them trading the advantage. Back at ringside, The Rock smacks Big Show with the ringbell and then Rock and Triple H double suplex Big Show through the announce table. Blimey! The Rock and Triple H brawl in the crowd for a bit with Rock managing to get the advantage. Back in, Rock stomps on Triple H in the corner. Rock clotheslines the referee by mistake. Rock goes for the Rock Bottom but it gets reversed into the setup for the Pedigree. That gets reversed into a slingshot to the corner and then Rock finally hits the Rock Bottom. Shane McMahon come in to make the count but it only gets two. Rock has words with Shane and then hits another Rock Bottom on Triple H. Rock makes the cover but Big Show pulls Shane out at two. Rock comes out after Show but ends up on the announce table. Back in, Show stomps on Triple H and headbutts him into the corner. Show manages to knock down Triple H and then goes after Rock on the outside. That was stupid. Show throws Rock into the steps while Triple H gives Shane a Pedigree onto the WWF Championship. Rock comes back in and gets a DDT on Triple H but Show takes down Rock and hits an elbow. DX come down and attack Show and Rock. Vince McMahon comes down to the ring and picks up the WWF Championship and nails Triple H with it. Meanwhile, Show manages to fight off DX and then hits the Showstopper on Triple for the pin, which Vince McMahon counts, at 16:17.Winner and NEW WWF Champion: Big Show. The finish was quite overbooked but the match itself was actually OK. **

- Overall: Well this card wasn't as terrible as I remember it to be. However, that doesn't mean that it's particularly good either. Most the matches are throwaway crap with only a couple of matches worth watching. And as for the Big Show winning the WWF Championship, bleh! Recommendation to avoid.

Feedback Apreciated!
