SNL Review: Brittany Murphy/Nelly

Just a note: I do a LOT of pre review stuff here this week so feel free to use the scroll down button. I’m serious.

Hey there everybody and a happy 18th birthday to me. Now I know what you’re thinking- what do you give Gaydar? It’s my birthday, I have to pontificate a bit if you will. And when I pontificate- I write awful song parodies.

So with apology to U2, here is my pontification-

The Canuck is 18, he can now buy a gun

But he’s in Canada, with the stiffer gun laws

He’s out of luck, but he really doesn’t care

Cause he’s eighteen and that is mega awesome

He can now buy pornography

And fully support Republicans, get them in office

It's a beautiful day, you turn 18

And you feel like it's a beautiful day

Like going to fallonfey

Don't let it get away

You're on the plane, headed to New York

You hope it don’t crash, despite the irony

You love Toronto, but the Leafs blew it tonight

You've been all over town tonight and met Greg Kinnear

It's a beautiful day

Like going to fallonfey

It's a beautiful day

Like going to fallonfey

Touch me, because I am now legal

Teach me, so I don’t fail French

See the world in blue and white

See Lord Stanley right in front of you

See the Michael Peca on the ground

See Darcy Tucker standing over him

See the Leafs in the Cup finals

See them winning the whole thing

See the New Yorker with a flag in his hand

Wouldn’t that kick major ass

It was a beautiful day

Beautiful day

Like going to fallonfey

Touch me, because I am now legal

Teach me, so I don’t fail French

What you don't have you don't need it now

You can drink in one year anyhow

What you don't have you don't need it now

You don't need it now, you don't need it now

Wow- that sucked.

Sports Report-

Devils- Well they lost to the Canadians which yea sucks cause I hate the Habs. But they’re only like three points behind the Flyers so I think everything will be over like rover.

Leafs- Well I went to the game tonight and even though they lost, they played pretty well and kept it competitive and they’re only four points out. So that’s good.

Canucks- Whoa- did someone tell these guys it’s after Christmas cause they have been kicking major ass in a majourly awesome way and are catching up to the Wild.

Nets- Tough loss against the Mavs tonight but they have been playing great all year. K-Mart 4 life.

Saints- Last week’s win against Carolina was a nailbiter and this week they have the Falcons who are coming off that awesome game against the Steelers. They need to keep winning since Tampa is keeping neck and neck.

Anywho- let’s do some recapping.

Barron meets the Mayor-

So this week I find out Mayor Guiliani is in town signing copies of his book. I was like: Gazziza and on Thursday I headed to Indigo Books prepared to wait 3.5 hrs to meet the mayor. I bought his book and I gotta say- it’s pretty damn good. It’s all about how he ran NYC and made it kick ass. So anyway I finally get to meet him and I got to say one thing I’ve always wanted to say:

Thank you.

Barron buys CDs-

I bought Paul Simon’s new greatest hits CD and its pretty kick ass. It pretty much spans his whole solo career and it’s awesome hearing him evolve as an artist and all the different styles he used and stuff.

Anthology is also pretty good- some of the themes are amazing while there are others that are a definite skip.

Barron makes the news-

No they didn’t figure I ran I ran over Bill Clinton’s dog, Buddy.

No, I was not in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

In fact- it snowed up here today and I was dressed in suitable snow attire: shorts, Maple Leafs Jersey, Canucks shirt and that’s it. Yes- I was cold.

So this dude who works for the news decided to interview me and I was the lead story on City News

Now if only I could be on WU next.

Mailbag!!!!!!

[email protected] writes-

Is there any team out there that is better than the Minnesota Wild?

A quick check at the standings reveals that Dallas and Boston are both currently better then the Minnesota Wild. The Wild are a young team and while they may make the playoffs- they won’t go too far.

Steph Crespo writes-

Hello Bob Barron:

I was curious if you liked the Times Square Red Lobster joke on SNL's

last

episode w/Nia Vardalos. I was watching Conan when he had Amy Poehler

and

someone else on, and Conan said it in his monologue on Wednesday

night!!!(or

Thurs.) When I heard the joke on Saturday, I knew I heard it somewhere

else!

Just thought I might point that out!!!

~Stephanie

P.S.

I like your reviews!!!

I did see the Conan and yes I did notice that the joke was the same. Eh- Tina also once stole a joke from Norm so I think she’s allowed to steal one joke every two years or something. As long as it’s funny and she doesn’t steal a joke from Janeane Garafalo or something.

PS: Thank you

This is in reference to the Dale Harris News Organization so please put this in your mailbag.

Hey Dale. Can I call you Dale. Well too bad I just did. Bob does good episode reviews. No I dont care for the sports report or the wresting report but like he said you can just scroll down. Dont you people ever think. Duh. Bob is also a cool guy. I met him and we are friends. So before you criticsize others think about yourself first. Have a nice day. :)

Well there you have it folks, SNLJamie laying the written smackdown on Dale. Thank you for confirming my coolness since I’m sure after a lot of people are sceptical of my coolness seeing as how I’m-

Canadian, republican, a wrestling fan, a fan of Paul Simon and thinks that putting eggs and bacon in donuts would be a good idea.

Yes- SNLJamie is a friend and she also gets to see SNL every week which is pretty mega cool, well except when Drew Barrymore hosts.

Have a nice day.

Jason_Hilbourne@ ziba.com writes-

Bob,

I got your email address from that SNL episode review page.

Did you videotape this weekend's show? If so, I would love to get a copy of that "Swiffer Sleeper" commercial parody. It would be great if you could email it, but I'll also pay for FedExing the videotape. Can you help?

Adios,

Jason

I actually don’t tape SNL but I do know they will most likely rerun this or the Sara Michelle Gellar episode shortly.

Chad Ruffner writes-

Hi Bob,

Raw was an average "Before The PPV" type

show that provided adequate hype for Survivor Series.

My favorite parts of the show were the opening Tag

Title match between Kane/RVD vs Y2J/Christian, The

angle between Victoria,Terri,and Trish(Even If

Victoria can't act.), and The show endschmozhmoz

between all The Participants In The Elimination

Chamber Match. However,should'ved've been The

casSummer SlammmerSlam this year, The WWE really needs

to turn up their product. Having HHH drop The World

Title(Preferably to RVD or Booker T), as well as The

debut of Steiner to The Raw Brand should be a start.

I would also like to see A new writer for said Raw

Brand, but I know that's only a long range dream.

Speaking of which, you were

right about It being Vince McMahon's fault that the

writing sucks, since he has fieverythingval on

eveything. However, numerous sources have reported

that Steunapproachablely unapprochable when It comes

to wrestlers giving feedback re: their characters and

storylines. You would think someone that InUn

talentedd and Untalented would be open to suggestions.

But then again she IS A McMahon!!

Later,

Chad

RAW actually didn’t suck Monday and I was pleasantly surprised. The tag title match was pretty kick ass but I didn’t dig the Victoria angle mainly because I kept going- where’s Goldust? I hated the main event of RAW but the sad thing is, I’ve kind of become used to Booker T losing whch is pretty sad. I would love to see HHH drop the title to Booker or RVD but I have a feeling either he’s gonna retain or HBK is gonna win.

RAW could use a new writer and yes- it is the McMahons fault pretty much that the product sucks ass.

Cold Opening

Cast- Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider

Thoughts- I heard Adam Sandler has been advertising 8 Crazy Nights as featuring the Chanukah song- whoops- gave it away. This of course was not as good as the first Chanukah song but was still absolutely hilarious. As someone who is Jewish, it is good to know there are others out there. I could’ve easily done without Rob Schneider here has he added nothing. I thought he was going to come in and say: YOU CAN DO EET! but alas. ****1/2

Monologue

Cast- Brittany Murphy, Tracy Morgan, Chris Parnell, Jimmy Fallon, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Chris Kattan, Will Forte, Dean Edwards

Thoughts- I was informed that this monologue was a parody of 8 Mile, the movie out there featuring Eminem. Amy cutting up the beats and kicking it old school was delish and had me busting a move old school breakdance spinaroonie style, can you dig? This skit was f to the u to the n to the n to the y despite the fact yo that it once again wasn’t a monologue that kept it real and seemed like it was selling out and abandoning the street roots- whasupwit dat yo. On the Sunny D side of things, Dean Edwards my brother of colour was spinning the beats Jam master Jay RIP style and I was feeling that homes. Like I said this was bling blingin’ and ching chingin’ and I was all up in its area, word to your mother- peace out- I’M OUTTA HERE! ****

Welcome Back, Potter

Cast- Kattan, Edwards, Forte

Thoughts- I apologise if I missed the other cast members because I didn’t take notes on who was in this cause I thought the skit was actually you know- gonna start. As a Welcome Back Kotter fan, I found this skit to be pretty funny but the thing knocking it was once again- not being an actual skit. ***1/2

Leatherman

Cast- Murphy, Fallon, Horatio Sanz

Thoughts- Oh lord. Okay Jimmy- the first time you laughed in a skit- it was funny. Second time- It got a chuckle. Now that it’s like the 800th time you’ve done, I must say this-

IT’S GETTING OLD!!!!!

I understand Jimmy and Horatio like to have fun on the air but it is mega unprofessional, especially when you’re on the air and they’re cracking up totally ruined the skit for me. The sad thing is- I had a feeling Jimmy was gonna laugh by the way he was acting. So Jimmy- don’t laugh anymore please unless someone’s wig falls off. Got it, get it, good. Bank it, spank it, smack it on the bing-bong. *3/4

Donahue

Cast- Darrell Hammond, Morgan, Rudolph, Jeff Richards

Thoughts- I never personally got MSNBC on my cable dial so I really can’t say if I hate them more then CNN but I never really liked Phil Donahue since well the dude is a moron. I think it’s funny that CNN and MSNBC both signed these high profile news peopke and yet O’Reilly is still kicking ass and taking names. I always enjoy Tracy’s Al Sharpton impression and Maya was a hoot as Barbara Streisand. I wasn’t feeling Jeff as Michael Moorer, but at least he kept his shirt on so hoorah for good taste. The skit wasn’t that great over all but it had intangibles and was- **1/2

Jarrett’s Room

Cast- Murphy, Fallon, Sanz, Seth Meyers,

Thoughts- I actually like Jarrett’s Room now as Seth Meyers has once again proven why he is the man and why people should buy him Celtics hats to ease whatever his pain he has. Seriously- Jarrett’s Room has become funny thanks to the addition of DJ Jonathan Feinstein. Of course I promise everyone, I will give Jarrett’s Room ***** if Jeff Jarrett shows up and El Kabongs Jimmy. Seth totally made this skit work. ***

Gay Butler

Cast- Meyers, Rachel Dratch

Thoughts- I swear to God, if Seth was a cast member I would seriously have a hard time deciding between him and Tina. His British accent and ways of pronunciation were perfect and right on spot. My complaints of the skit were that it started out a bit slow but then really picked up and became awesome. ***1/2

Tennis Talk

Cast- Murphy, Rudolph, Morgan, Edwards

Thoughts- This sucked for the most part but it had three redeeming qualities

1) Interesting premise

2) The studio was cold

3) Tracy and Dean were in the same skit and were in drug.

That all adds up to- **1/4

Nelly w/ Kelly Rowland

Thoughts- I HATE STOOLS!!!! Why was Kelly Rowland talking about her boob??? *

Weekend Update

Cast- Tina Fey, Fallon, Kattan, Rudolph, Richards

Thoughts- Message to Jeff Richards:

It’s been a rough two years. You’re one character is Drunk Girl and well no one gives a flying fuck about you. Now you’ve been Update twice in the past three weeks, just like Seth was at the beginning. One thing- On WU- Seth is funny. You are not.

You suck on Weekend Update.

You suck.

You suck.

Never sit at that desk again.

Drunk Girl is overplayed. It’s done. It isn’t funny anymore.

Aside from Jeff Richards ruining another perfectly good Update, this was solid. The jokes were really great for like the umpteenth week in a row, and while Jimmy did have his usual clunkers, I found him to be not bad this week. I found the Phil Collins thing to be somewhat funny but like I said- the jokes have been awesome this year.

CK was funny this week- as much as I hate his guts and wish him a first class ticket to anywhere but Studio 8H, I will give him credit when his credit is deserved.

Bit CK- Norm rules. (Inside joke) Anywho- jokes were great, CK was funny, Maya was ok and Jeff sucked. ***1/2

Astronaut Jones

Cast- Garrett Morris, Nelly, Morgan, Parnell, Meyers

Thoughts- GARRETT MORRIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Holy shit- I went absolutely crazy when I saw him. Astronaut Jones is one of my favourite skits because of all the little things involved like the theme song and the production thing at the end. It was great seeing Garrett back- he truly is awesome. ****1/4

Religitables-

Thoughts- Whoa- this skit was like offensive and stuff but was pretty funny. This of course was a spoof of the Veggie Tails move that is out in theatres. Not one of Smigel’s best and was kinda hit and missy but still fine and dandy like a bag full of candy. ***

Jack Handey-

Thoughts- Well yea.DUD

Nelly

He mentioned Jason Kidd. **1/4

Gaydar #3: This Time Its Personal!

Cast- Murphy, Hammond, Dratch, Morgan, Rudolph, Fallon, Parnell

Thoughts- Last time the transfer of PAL to NTSC was messed up or so but this time well I can’t think of an excuse- it just flat out sucked. I mean cripes all Friday- it was funny once!!!! *1/2

The Bottom Line- Avg. skit was **.7 which makes this a thumbs up show. There was some great stuff on this show but a few clunkers brought the avg. skit down but this was still a great show and it was fun way to end November. Seeing Garrett Morris back was terrific and it’s good to see he’s doing well. Well I got a plane to catch so see you later.

Thumbs Up

First off Brittany Murphy is fuggin hawt. *chomp* Now that I got that out of the way. My first thoughts seeing her were, "Damn now I remember why I liked 'Clueless' so much, I hope they do an 'Astronaut Jones' with her in it." Then sure enough out busts Tracy with Garrett F'N Morris! Oh what a thrill indeed. I don't care if AJ is the same damn skit everytime they do it, it always cracks me up waiting for the punchline.

My other thought was hot host = I bet Parnell raps at update. Well I guess they couldn't wait and pushed him out at the monologue. I wasn't all that crazy about it. I haven't seen '8 Mile' and I don't really like rap, however the lyrics for both sides were pretty damn funny (You're Brian Fellows. Bitch I'm President Bush...) and Amy was golden.

I was SO let down that Welcome Back Potter was only a commercial and not a full skit.

Nelly = the suck. Please bring back some rock and raping roll to the musical guest spot.

Aside from the fact that I loved Astronaut Jones, this show seemed like recurring character hell to me. It was still a good one though overall.

Happy B-day Bobby.

I only caught bits and pieces and as usual didn't laugh once. Jimmy Fallon is painfully unfunny, yet he seems to be on all the time while Tracy Morgan hardly ever gets time.

And Weekend update hasn't been *** or better since Fallon and Fey started

And I don't think Mya Rudolph has ever done a funny thing in her entire life, her skits are brutal. And the tennis skit...Dean isn't funny, Mya isn't funny, and the nipple joke was the only thing it had going for it.

Jarrett's room would be better without Jerrett...Seth's decient in those but only on screen 4 seconds

Hey, Bob for the first time I think me and you can agree on a good show!

Cold Opening: "As someone who is Jewish, it is good to know there are others out there." I hear ya! Adam Sandler is always funny, and all variations of the Hannukah song rule! A

Monologue: Im just not into rap, and I never saw the movie so I guess that would help in getting the joke. I guess it was funny to see a bunch of white guys outrapping Tracy but besides that it didnt do much for me. C

Welcome Back, Potter: Funny, funny concept. On one hand it would have been nice if they went somewhere with it, but on the other hand I have a feeling it would have gone too long and screwed up. Cool parody though. B+

Leatherman: I like leatherman. Jimmy and Horatio are funny even when they crack up because you can tell theyre actually having fun out there and not just going through the motions. B+

Donahue: haha, no one watched Donahue. Jesse Ventura is about to replace his ass anyway. Great impressions all around, good stuff. A-

Jarrett’s Room: Usually not a fan of the Jarret's Room but there was nothing actively bad, and Horatio is a riot. B

Gay Butler: As an impression it worked well. The commentator was a great touch too. B+

Tennis Talk: I don't how the FUCK they thought up of this one. But it was funny. So out there, I liked it. B+

Weekend Update: Always funny, as it was this week. The Liza thing was good, but they need to retire drunk girl FAST. It's NOT FUNNY. Really dragged it down. B+

Astronaut Jones: I don't get the joke I guess. I mean his theme song is funny, but I dont understand why it's funny I guess. C

Religitables: Good stuff here. Always funny when religious propoganda gets a kick in the ass. A

Gaydar #3: It was funny the first couple times but it's run it's course. B-

Overall, no real blowaway skecth but nothing was bad either, so overall we got a consistent show that was funny all around. Good job!

Brittany Murphy

Why the Hell is Nelly trying to sing ? Doesn't he listen when people tell him HE'S NOT A SINGER. He sounds terrible.

Am I the only one that thinks Britney Murphy is not at all hot? She looks like a skeleton with skin hanging off her arms.
