I'm not a real big Metroid fan...but I'm pretty excited about this game.

I see that ign and gamespot both gave it massive scores (9.8 and 9.7 respectively....both .1 higher than their scores for GTA Vice City...which boggles my mind)

Anyone else looking forward to picking it up this week?

I don't have an NGC and I hate playing FPS games (partly because I'm terrible at them), but I'm definitely looking forward to watching my friends play it. It looks like it will be a fun game to watch.

Yeah.

They've had the demo at my local Best Buy for weeks...but someone is always playing it, usually with a couple people watching and waiting for their turn.

I've played the demo. A shoots, B jumps, and the game fuckin' rocks. Now, let me clear something up: I, like BPS, am not a huge Metroid fan. I could never find a copy on the NES, and being too young to read magazines or the Internet (*cough*) when it came out, I didn't hear of it until Super Metroid, a game I played once. Now, having said that, I can't judge how it compares to the original games. But, as a FPS, it's a must-have.

Any Gamecube game that gets a 97% from Gamespot with the only huge complaint being the lack of multiplayer and a few other nitpicky arguments is a must have in my book. Its on my christmas wish list along with Mario Sunshine and Sonic Mega Pack.

The fact that the game is just one huge very diverse level with no loading times at all and some gorqeous graphics makes me wish I had the cash to go out and buy it tuesday.

Why because it isn't a shitty graphiced side scroller?

Posted

No because it's not in the line of one of the greatest series on a nintendo system EVER, man.

There is no basis for calling Metroid shitty.

According to every review I've seen they all call it the best Metroid game ever.

And they all say that it is a faithful addition

Considering how good Super Metroid was I'll be buying this.

Plus everyone I know that's played the demo told me it rocks.

Considering how its been 8 years, I can't see how people can complain that the game got an overhaul. I mean, no one complained when Mario and Zelda got the 3D treatment, hell they were even considered the greatest games (Mario 64 and Zelda:OoT) on the N64 at the time...In all the reviews I've read Metroid Prime is the best Gamecube game out to date.

And if you like the old school Metroid, get a Gameboy Advance and Metroid Fusion, and hook them up and you can access the old school 80s version of Metroid on the Gamecube.

It's not the 3D treatment that people are cheesed about, it's the first person shooter element. If they'd done the same upgrade they did with Mario and Zelda nobody would've made a peep. People just didn't want it to feel or look like Quake 4.

It's an FPS with no MULTIPLAYER? WTF?

It's NOT an FPS guys. Read the reviews, play the game. It's the same perfect Metroid gameplay, just the perspective is different. You can't compare the game to Quake or UT.

It has first person perspective. You shoot things. What's to argue? Just because it's not mindless action like Id's games doesn't mean that it's not the same genre.

You shoot people in third person perspective adventure games too.

Why don't they call those "Third Person Shooters"?

???

Because you do more in them that just shoot guns, making them fall in the adventure games category.

Thus, they call this a first person adventure game. As you do more than shoot.

I shoot turtles with fireballs in Super Mario. And what about me shooting arrows at monsters in games like Lands of Lore or Ultima Underworld? They even have a first person perspective. That means they are the same genre as Quake. Right?

bps is right, it's a first person action adventure. I don't know why people have a problem to accept that.

3D platforming was still relatively new when Mario went 3D so I think there was this newness factor to it that had people buzzing. It didn't feel like the Super Mario Bros. I remembered playing on the NES but the gameplay changes it undertook in it's upgrade to N64 were good and logical ones.

Zelda as a game series I felt could always take that logical step into 3D. Link already moved in every compass direction as opposed to back/forth like Mario (not counting Adv. of Link.)

When I first heard of a nextgen Metroid I figured it would be in the same style as either Mario/Zelda 64. When I heard 1st person I thought WTF are they doing? Most console FPS suck. There are the exceptions like Goldeneye but nine times out of ten I'd prefer to have my FPS gaming on PC. I HATE the way FPS control on consoles. Doing Metroid in a FPS style just didn't seem like the logical move to me and apparantly to a lot of other gamers out there.

The first person adventure debate? I can believe it's a first person adventure. I've played one before called Deus Ex, a fantastic game if you've never played it.

I don't think Nintendo is stupid enough to piss on the greatness that is/was Metroid. I have no doubts in my mind that Prime will be a great game and judging by the reviews it sounds as such. Provided the current reviews aren't slanted by fan-boy bias. (OMG ITS METROID FOR FIRST TIME IN FOREVER!!) The direction they chose to take the series is just not one that makes me want to rush out and buy a Gamecube. Had it been the classic Metroid with Contra: Shattered Soldier style side-scrolling 3D I would've preordered a year in advance.

It's very much Metroid... I said the same thing when I heard it was going to be a FPS, but take my word for it (if my word means anything to you). It's definately Metroid. Classic Metroid gameplay converted to FPS form (and it's gorgeous too)

It's kind of already been said, but I'll just line it out in a very consise statement:

Prime isn't an first-person shooter - it's first-person Metroid.

That's it. You have target lock-ons, so none of the aiming skill required for FPSs is present here. You have a ton of other stuff you can do, between double jumping, half-piping as the morph ball, combo bombing, combo shooting...it's far too robust to be littered into the FPS genre. All of the things that you did in the Metroid series are present here, but under a first person perspective that delivers, essentially, one of the most surreal games I've ever played.

Prime is the Game of the Year. You can take it to the bank.
