I remember him defending his title vs Ken Shamrock the night after Survivor Series 1997, which was in November. How can next week be HBK's first match on RAW since October 1997?

I know he didn't work a match from Rumble to Mania, and that was to salvage what was left of his back so he could wrestle Austin. But he did wrestle at the DX ppv in December...I'd have a hard time believing he was working for 5 months without having an actual match on Raw. He faced Owen Hart in an I-C Title Vs Euro Title match, which resulted in a No Contest when Austin interfered and stunned the ref. They probably got that match and the one from December confused.

This was around the same time that Shamrock was getting a huge push. He fought Bret one week and made him tap (but the referee was knocked out), Michaels came out, a brawl ensued. Then Shamrock fought Michaels, made him tap (but the ref was knocked out), Bret came out, a brawl ensued.

The difference this time is that he repeated it at least 3 or 4 times. With Vince apparently whispering in his earphone every 10 seconds to tell him what to say, you would imagine that JR would have corrected the mistake.

He also had several Raw matches in between, but the December outing was his genuine last Raw match. Oct 20th: Euro champion Shawn vs. I-C champion Owen Hart is a no-contest when DX and The Hart Foundation get into a big brawl. Nov 3rd: Ken Shamrock beat Euro champ Shawn by DQ in the main event due to HHH, Chyna & Rude's interference Nov 24th: World champ Shawn beat Vader in the main due to HHH & Chyna. After the bell, DX turn on the newly inducted Jim Neidhart and beat the crap out of him. Dec 15th: Legion Of Doom beat Shawn & HHH by DQ in the main event when Chyna & the as-yet unaffiliated New Age Outlaws attack LOD. Shawn & HHH seem impressed with Badd Ass & Road Dogg after the bell. Dec 22nd: HHH 'beat' Shawn to win the Euro title in the aforementioned greatest match ever. Shawn cries while HHH says it's the greatest moment of his life apart from his kid being born, then remembers he doesn't have a kid. Ah, good times ... Dec 31st: Owen Hart beat World champ Shawn by DQ, after HHH & Chyna shockingly interfere in the match as per usual.

After being forced by Undertaker and propositioned by Vince. i was awol in europe around that time period and missed the backstage shennanigans surrounding wm14. what happened exactly - did shawn just want to forfeit the belt again and was heavied into doing the job?

Vince coaxed him into believing he'd get the title back when he returned, WrestleMania XV, because originally Shawn thought he would be back in time. The severity of the injury kept that from happening, thank god.
