The Owen push that should have happened

Recommended Posts

Guest converge241

Remember at the DX pay per view in Dec 97 after the Michaels-Shamrock match when Owen attacked Shawn and put him through the table? The crowd (and myself and numerous other fans) was so into the whole thing. Owen could wrestle and finally had a great direction off of The Montreal Incident. People were waiting for the Shawn-Owen match but it didnt happen. Imaging if they went with that how things might have turned out:

Owen finally becomes a permanaent top tier player.

He may not have to resort to The Blue Blazer character, and never be in the rafters.

Shawn wouldnt have had that casket match with Taker and screwed up his back.

Ive heard that Shawn kiboshed it due to worrying if Owen had heat with him or something , but that doesnt reallyy make a lot of sense as Owen still feuded with DX?

Did the WWF chicken out maybe?

I'd love to hear ant thoughts on this cause it has always bothered me.

I was sure there were going to do a Michaels/Owen program. If booked right, it would have seriously drawn money. I figured they would do Michaels v Owen @ RR98 and wait for the Michaels/UT blowoff at NWO98, then Michaels/Austin @ WM14. Then they decided to do Owen/HHH instead, which didn't amount to anything. Then Owen/X-Pac which amounted to even less, THEN they turned Owen heel by joining the Nation, and the rest is history. It had always bothered me too. Owen's monster push was something I'd waited for, but sadly never came.

Guest the 1inch punch

Um, Shawn outright refused to work with Owen

Basically, Austin wasnt comfortable working with him again, HBK outright said no, so Owen got shunted onto H3 and was made look like an idiot. Owen wasnt happy, but had nowhere to go

Owen/HBK was supposed to main event the Royal Rumble, but like the 1inch punch said, HBK refused to work with Owen. Thinking Owen might go wild on him during their match. HBK/UT ended up main eventing the Royal Rumble PPV.

I want asking really so much the reason but just kind of pondering what could have been.

And If "Um, Shawn outright refused to work with Owen"

why the heck would he agree to be attacked by him?

Also Shawn refused to job to Austin at WM14 and that problem was corrected, so there's no need to act like Shawn's say in the matter was the be-all/end-all.

Rumor has it, on the net, that mean Mark threatened to beat the shit out of Shawn if he didn't job to Austin at WM14. Is there any credence to this?

Yeah Taker was the "correction" I referred too.

I love that story.

It's too bad nobody was there to keep Taker out of that Rumble match.

It was one of those Shawn Michaels things. He just decided he didn't want to work with Owen, even after they shot the angle at the D-X PPV.

I think it was HBK refused to put Owen over rather than not work with him because they did wrestle on Raw.

If the senario that Converge mantioned happened than the WWF would be quite different.  Shawn would still be a top guy and HHH probably wouldn't.  Foley wouldn't have gotten the corporate champ run, at least in April and May because Shawn would have still been feuding with Austin.  Owen probably would have gotten a World title run and Rock's push would have been pushed back due to that and Shawn's politics.  Th ebiggest problem would have been getting Austin and Owen in the ring together.  Outside of them teaming at NWO 98 and the Survivor Series 97 match I don't think they ever worked together again.

No, They never did.  I can't even remember a Time other then 1999 Rumble, they were even in the same ring.

I posted this somewhere before...

BUt if Shawn would have worked with Owen this would have been boss:

After the Montreal incident...Shawn is putting down that Bret midget and Owen comes out (hell...he stayed with the company...) and challenges him because "that belt doesn't belong to you"

They have the match...which Owen wins...and then he grabs the mic and says:

"I did it!  I beat Shawn Micheals!  My lousy brother couldn't beat him, but I did!  I am the greatest Hart ever!  WHOOOO!"

That would have been my favorite moment ever.

That would have been great to do it on that Raw after Shawn did that whole schmeal. Either that night or the same night Bret debuted on Nitro (like 3 weeks or a month later right?).

Does anybody have definite conformation on whether they had a match on Raw? Im kind of curious now cause we got two opposing theories. I used to have photographic memory for stuff like that but im losing it. I think that part of my brain got affected during marriage :).

Owen & HBK did have a match on Raw that ended in a DQ after HHH hit Owen in the head with a crutch.

from a CRZ report from 8-98:

THE ROCK & OWEN HART v. STONE COLD STEVE AUSTIN & THE UNDERTAKER for the Tag Team Championship - Ross says we've got no more commercials - well, gee whiz, it IS ten minutes to the hour. Code Red will feature the lady Tiger paid to strip, then unstrip. Anybody watched Code Red yet? Of course, the champs have separate entrances - which means this is the FOURTH time I've heard breaking glass tonight. All four men brawl to start the match and quickly the Rock and Austin are outside and the Undertaker is manhandling Hart in the ring. Big headbutt. Shoulderblock, 2, time to do that tightrope walkin' thing, and a shot for the Rock for good measure. Hart walks over to Austin and eats a punch. Tag to Austin, who probably hasn't forgotten that Hart broke his neck. Hart comes back with a spinning heel kick. Hart throws everything at Austin but it doesn't work. Rake of the face to get the Rock tagged in, but he doesn't do much better against Austin. Austin actually executes a WRESTLING MOVE! Snapmare and elbow drop. Suplex for 2. Tag to the Undertaker. Kick. Karate chop to the throat. Rock's head meets the buckle. Rock rakes the face and puts on a headlock. Undertaker turns it into a back suplex. "Dynamic" leg drop for 2 (Owen makes the save). Undertaker takes the Rock's head to the top turnbuckle and continues to punch. Whip into the ropes - chokeslam? No, Owen is in to clip Undertaker's knee. Illegal tag and Owen continues to bend the leg the wrong way. Tag, make a wish. The Rock with a series of rights. Whip into the corner, tag - The Rock is whipped into the Undertaker but he gets a clothesline. Owen still manages a spinning heel kick for 2. Undertaker fires back and manages to tag Austin. Austin stomps a mudhole in Owen. To an opposite corner, more punching, more kicking. Sharpshooter?!? But the Rock is in to make sure Hart doesn't lose to his own finisher. The Rock with a double bird of his own. Tag to the Rock - Austin ducks a clothesline - Thesz press. Punches in bunches. The Rock with a back elbow and Austin falls. To Owen's boot. Now a tag to Owen - whip into the ropes, sleeper is on. The Rock is bleeding from the mouth/nose. "Austin" chant is rolling. Arm falls once - arm falls twice - I'm guessing arm won't fall a third time. There's a bird, in fact. Austin comes back until Owen's trick knee acts up and hits Austin in a sensitive area. Owen tries to set up a Sharpshooter but Austin powers out. Tag to the Rock, who blatantly hits un foul but referee Tim White is busy trying to keep the Undertaker from entering the ring. Chinlock until Austin power out. Rock Bottom? No, elbow by Austin. Big rights as Austin Hulks up. Double clothesline! Both men down. Undertaker reaches for a tag but nobody's moving. Count is up to 7. Tag to Owen - hot tag to Undertaker. Undertaker is a house a fire! Big boot to Rocky's face! Chokeslam for Owen! 1, 2, Rock saves. Austin is in and now Austin and Rocky are out. Meanwhile, Owen is in the Tombstone. 1, 2, 3 Here's MANKIND with the Mandible claw on the Undertaker - here's KANE with a chair - he hits the Undertaker! But was he aiming for Mankind? Undertaker takes the chair and looks at Kane - then his Mankind again. Here's the NEW AGE OUTLAWS for no good reason. Stunner on the Road Dog!
