Guest Luke Argyle Report post Posted November 19, 2002 I saw your post on ToA regarding the full version of the '96 barnburner now being available. I'm definately going to have to pick it up. I haven't got a Lynch update in a while. I'd assume he has it. Verification on that would be great. Good lookin' out.
Guest wolverine Report post Posted November 19, 2002 That would probably be a lot higher on my want list if it was more than just 4 minutes missing from TV. But it's always nice to have classic matches in full, in this case, my favorite Ohtani match. In fact, I actually like it a lot better than the more famous Ultimo-Ohtani 8/96 match. Guest TheyCallMeMark Report post Posted November 19, 2002 A little question on the side: Does anyone know if that by any chance is one of the Liger-Ohtani bouts on the Premium Issue: Ohtani tape? Can't find dates on those matches anywhere in particular.
Guest DragonflyKid Report post Posted November 20, 2002 SHINJIRO OHTANI: PREMIUM ISSUE Ohtani vs. Kanemoto 6/23/95 (CL) Ohtani vs. Kanemoto 9/14/98 (CL) Ohtani vs. Ka Shin 10/23/97 Ohtani/Kanemoto/Takaiwa vs. Lyger/Ka Shin/Dr. Wagner Jr. 4/13/98 (CL) Ohtani vs. Michinoku 5/28/94 (CL) Ohtani vs. Tajiri 5/20/97 Ohtani/Takaiwa vs. Lyger/Great Sasuke 4/13/99 (CL) Ohtani vs. El Samurai 10/16/97 (CL) Ohtani vs. El Samurai 5/19/98 (CL) Ohtani vs. Takaiwa 9/16/95 (CL) Ohtani vs. Takaiwa 5/31/98 (CL) Ohtani vs. Lyger 6/6/94 (JIP) Ohtani vs. Lyger 11/4/95 (CL) Ohtani/Kensuke Sasaki vs. Hiroyoshi Tenzan/Satoshi Kojima 3/24/99 (JIP) The '96 and '97 matches aren't on there. I need to get the '96 match myself as I had it ordered but for whatever reason it wasn't sent. The 2/97 match was great but I wanted to see the '96 match before it as to not miss the pychology. Guest Luke Argyle Report post Posted November 20, 2002 '97 was good, but they kinda piss all over the fact that the shotay was the established killer move by Liger slapping the shit out of Ohtani a bunch of times at the end of the '97 match. It's important to see the '96 match to see how the palm strike is used effectively, but it's negated in '97 to a certain degree.

It's important to see the '96 match to see how the palm strike is used effectively, but it's negated in '97 to a certain degree. That's why I'll be tracking down the '96 match, I'll probably see about getting the full version. The '97 match did end after a Liger Shotay so the move still retained credibility. It's not like a Liger/Kanemoto match I saw where Kanemoto kicked out of an Avalanche Fisherman's Buster before no-selling a 2nd one.
Guest Tim Cooke Report post Posted November 20, 2002 The Sho tay really isn't crapped all over in the 1997 match. It is just a play off of 1/20/97 Misawa v Kobashi. Misawa's elbow smashes = sho tay. The 1996 match is superior though. The 12 minute 1997 version is far better than the full 27 minute match which just kind of stays there for the first 15 or so minutes. After watching more RINGS and seeing how the Palm Strike is used as a major knock down weapon for those who aren't too great on their feet, I can see why Liger took that move into his arsenal. Then again, Liger is the God of Juniors. Tim
Guest Lord of The Curry Report post Posted November 21, 2002 The Sasaki/Ohtani vs TenKoji match from the Premium Issue tape is fuckin brilliance. Ohtanis facial expressions when TenKoji no-sells his offense is God-like, he makes you believe that these are his last moments on earth and that he's about the die. Guest wolverine Report post Posted November 21, 2002 I tend to reserve phrases such as "God-like" for when I see performances such as the one Kawada had against Gary Albright on 10/25/95. Fuck, that match is awesome. When you're in the zone, you're in the zone. And Kawada was in it big-time. Oh, and Akira Fukuzawa is the best announcer EVER. Guest Lord of The Curry Report post Posted November 21, 2002 wolverine- It wasn't really meant to demean the "God-like" status of somebody like Kawada, it's just my 'lil way of saying it kicked ass. Didn't mean to offend. Oh, and totally 100% agreed on the Fukuzawa thing, I mean, I find the guy to be 100X more entertaining then Jim Ross and I don't understand what the fuck he's saying. His emotions and banshee-like screaming more convey more emotion then any "BAH GAWD STUNNER! AUSTIN! AUSTIN!" ever could. The one incident with Fukuzawa that cemented his place in my heart was his calling of Hansen v. Kobashi 93. When Hansen hits the lariat with Kobashi straddling the top rope, Fukuzawa's reaction is akin to that of somebody who just witnessed the brutal execution of somebody they cared about right in front of their face. I guess in a way he had, the scream and subsequent shock and in his voice after totally make the ending amazing.
Guest DragonflyKid Report post Posted November 21, 2002 Whereas Fukuzawa may have been a great Commentator AJ also had a great ref, I don't know his name but he did a majority of the big matches from the mid to late 90's(I do think he was the one responsible for goofing up a finish in a Misawa/Kawada match though). The best ring announcer by far was from a joshi promotion(AJW I think), again I don't know his name but I think it would be obvious as to who I'm talking about. He did announce for BEWU at least partially.
Guest wolverine Report post Posted November 21, 2002 Fukuzawa didn't announce Hansen-Kobashi. It was another one of AJ's Screaming Announcers, but Fukuzawa IS the best one (top matches he called are 6/3/94, 6/9/95 and 12/6/96). And the ref's name is Kiyohei Wada. You know, KYO-HEI! He's the best ref I've ever seen.
