Guest justsoyouknow Report post Posted November 20, 2002 Alright, let's get one thing straight. All of my life, I've been a rocker. Priest, AC/DC, Hammerfall, Manowar.....the only problem is, the crowd that I party with does not listen to this type of music. They listen to.....rap. And I, knowing pretty much nothing about rap, have turned to you, the Smusic board, for suggestions. What type of rap fits my tastes? And please don't offer me any rock/rap...I hate that. Guest Flyboy Report post Posted November 20, 2002 and even Eminem (the less commercial stuff aimed at rappers not teenagers). That I will agree with. Check out the greatness of "8-Mile (Road)" and "Rabbit Run" off the 8-Mile Soundtrack. It's just yummy.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted November 20, 2002 I know you said to not recommend rap/rock or whatever, but seriously, Stuck Mojo. It's amazing how well their tunes work for partying for both rockers (more specifically metalheads) AND hardcore rappers (lyrics about sex, death, politics, and barbecue, OH MY). My main recs for Mojo: "Suburban Ranger" (just Bonz, the vocalist {black}, rapping about wiggas) "Stuck Mojo Funk" (more of a funk song with a small metal/hardcore breakdown by Rich Ward in the middle, 15 seconds TOPS is the length of the breakdown) Insane Clown Posse "Hokus Pokus" "Chicken Huntin" "Play With Me" "Fuck Tha World" "Pass Me By" Twiztid "We Don't Die" "When You're Strange" (Doors cover...incredibly creepy) Dark Lotus "I Don't Care"
Guest Flyboy Report post Posted November 20, 2002 Anything that shares a genre with Limp Bikzit and Kid Rock must be skipped.
Guest crandamaniac Report post Posted November 20, 2002 You cant go wrong with some Vanilla Ice. Nah, seriously man. A group I'd suggest that hasn't been stated above is Jurassic 5. They're a pretty big group that blends together perfectly. Also try some Dilated Peoples. What I've heard has been really good. Just stay away from Nelly and Ja-Rule and you'll be fine

Guest Kinetic Report post Posted November 20, 2002 As a fellow hip hop novice who desperately wants to know what the fuck he's talking about when the topic comes up, I'd have to second the OutKast nod. Aquemini didn't leave my CD player for about a month after I bought it, which is rare for any type of album. And to all of you closed-minded anti-hip hop folks, I seek only to share this bit of advice: There is no glory in being that one mulleted guy in the Def Leppard shirt screaming at the cover band to play "Freebird" in the year 2002. Hip hop is the present and the future.
Guest Incandenza Report post Posted November 20, 2002 Aquemini didn't leave my CD player for about a month after I bought it, which is rare for any type of album. And you know why that is? Because it's a fucking great album. Period. To call it a great rap album is to pigeonhole it; it is a work of art. When I listen to Aquemini, I know that I am in the presence of a masterpiece. There are moments that are so damn good, I get chills. When I listen to it, I am excited. Excited because I will get to hear "Rosa Parks" again. I am excited because I get to hear "Spottieottiedopalicious" again. I am excited because I get to hear "Liberation" again. I treasure the fact that Aquemini exists, and that I am fortunate enough to own it. None of the above is hyperbole. Every single thing I said is the truth. If you do not feel the same way, then the problem is you, not the album.
Guest ant_7000 Report post Posted November 20, 2002 You might as well made this a ask Ant a hip hop question? All that yelling and screaming from Heavy mental giving you headache so your looking for change of pace? But, anyway if your looking for old school stuff or more recent? Old School: NWA- Straight out of Compton Public Enemy-any album RunDmc stuff LL Cool J's Radio Sugarhill gang Curtis Blow Grandmaster Flash Geto Boys Eric B and Rakim Recent stuff: Scarface: The best of Scarface (has just came out), The Fix (must have), Last of a Dying Breed. Outkast-Aqumeni, Stankonia, and Southernplayasticcadilacmusik (my favorite) Jay-z: Reasonable Doubt, Hard knock life Vol.2, Blueprint, and Blueprint 2 (The Curse side alone is worth it) Nas: Illmatic and Stillmatic Wu Tang Clan: 36 Chambers, Wu Forever, and Iron Flag (I also recommend Method Man's Tical album, Gza's Liquid Swords album, and Ghostface Killah's Ironman album, Raewon Cuban Link album.) 2pac: His lost tapes album (If you can find it), 2pacalypse now, Me against the World, All Eyez on Me, and Makaveil 7th day theory. Just get his Pre Death Row Stuff Biggie Smalls (Notorious B.I.G.): Ready to Die and Life After Death Non Commercial Rap or like hip hoppers say the stuff that don't get played on the Radio. Mos Def: Black on Both Sides (I can't seem find this one anywhere, its a must have if you want hear non commerical rap, its true hip hop.) Eminem: non commerical stuff is better so he's albums are worth a pickup Jurassic 5: I heard their new album is hot (true hip hop right here) I'll give them a chance. The Roots: When Things fall Apart Common: Can I borrow a Dollar, and I don't know the name of his last album but it had that song "The Light" on it. Mentions you should check out I didn't get to: DMX, Talib Kweli, Bone Thugs, Busta Rhymes, and Lost Boys. Stay away from: Nelly, Ja Rule (accept his 1st album before he soldout), Cash Money (especially now) and The New No Limit (Old stuff is ok mild recommendation)
Guest Kinetic Report post Posted November 20, 2002 I think I may be the one person in entire world with generally non-commerical taste in music who really liked "Hot in Herre." I heard it played really loud in Best Buy the other day and, goddamnit, that's a really fantastic song. I agree with any anti-Nelly sentiment outside of that one track, however. Guest LooseCannon Report post Posted November 20, 2002 I've been afraid to admit it, but I kind of like Nelly, and I do like that "Hot in Herre" song.
Guest Incandenza Report post Posted November 20, 2002 Eh. The only other mainstream rappper/rap group I can appreciate is Ludacris. Tracks like "U Got a Problem?," "Game Got Switched" and "Southern Hospitality" are borderline genuis. The only song on his second album that comes close is "Rollout." Guest Kinetic Report post Posted November 20, 2002 That duet Nelly did what whatever chick recently is fucking awful, though. This whole Ja Rule/random R&B female duet trend needs to stop before more innocent people get hurt. It's fucking jive-ass karaoke bullshit and I've ceased to have any tolerance for it. Guest ant_7000 Report post Posted November 20, 2002 I kinda do like that "Dilema" song Nelly and Kelly, I also like his 1st breakout song "Country Grammar". I like Ludacris stuff especially when im in the club.
Guest Kotzenjunge Report post Posted November 20, 2002 Ludacris OWNS. Get it ALL, ALL, I SAY! Other than him, I really can't stand the current bling-bling era of rap. I listen to "Natural Born Killers" and ironically sigh in relief. Fo sheez, Kotzenjunge
Guest Kinetic Report post Posted November 20, 2002 Jay Z's had a couple of catchy singles over the last couple of years, although nothing off The Blueprint made me want to go out and buy it. The only other mainstream hip hop musician that interests me much right now is Eminem. He's a pretty talented guy, both as a rapper and as a rabble rouser. Like the decidedly un-hip hop Bob Dylan said, anyone who can manage to get a rise out of America at this point must be doing something right.

The Best and unfortnately made it trendy Rap and R&B song ever put together was Method Man and Mary J Blige. I like the Common and Erykah Badu song too. Guest HungryJack Report post Posted November 20, 2002 As far as Public Enemy goes, I'd shy away from anything DOESN"t happen to be 'It takes a nation of millions to hold us back' or 'fear of a Black Planet'. HOWEVER, That's just me . I actually do like the soundtrack they did for 'he Got Game' . It's probably that album and Enter the 36 Chambers that got me into hip-hop initially. Guest bravesfan Report post Posted November 20, 2002 Outkast is a RELIGION. I'm telling you, from the 3 albums I have of theirs (Aquemini, Stankonia, Dre and Big Boi Presents..., fucking genius work. Damn, where was the Ludacris love a few months ago? It seemed like I was the only one who advocated putting him above Ja-Rule and Nelly, the commerical posers. "Word of Mouf" is an album you're going to love listening to over and over, especially the catchy beats in "Growing Pains", "Freaky Thangs" and "Block Lockdown"... Oh, and N.E.R.D. GODDAMN get "In Search Of", because it will blow your mind, seriously.
Guest Hogan Made Wrestling Report post Posted November 20, 2002 Also check out some DJ Kay Slay freestyles if you can find them (Kazaa is a good place). I'd recommend DMX's "Ruled Out" (major diss on Ja Rule) and one whose name I don't recall by Eminem and Xzibit (huge rip on Jermaine Dupri). If you are into the rapper feuds, the following are good: Dr Dre - Fuck Wit Dre Day Easy-E - Real Muthafuckin' Gs Ice Cube - No Vaseline Eminem and Dre - Say What You Say Snoop Dogg - Pimp Slapped Snoop Dogg - Fuck Suge Knight Tupac - Against All Odds
