Guest RobJohnstone Report post Posted November 20, 2002 I read in O'Reilly's book that during the clinton administration, we spent absurd amounts of money on dumb research like 4 million a year on reasearch on why american's do not like to eat beet's. I was wondering if the nation budget is available to the public with a full breakdown so we the people can acually see where our tax dollars are being spent? I know alot of watchdog groups get some of this info I was just wondering if it is available to us. I think wasteful government spending is a big part of our countries problem so, if anyone knows please post it, thanks --Rob
Guest LooseCannon Report post Posted November 20, 2002 The office of Management and Budget, I believe would have any info you want. You might even want to try their website. Though, worst case scenario, you might have to make an information request or information requests to the various departments.
Guest Tyler McClelland Report post Posted November 21, 2002 OMB has general figures, but it is mostly budget allocations to the different departments. However, the departments are where the stupid "research" goes anyway, and it's not just a Clinton thing. It happens in every administration, liberal and conservative, for the purpose of the different departments getting a larger budget for the next year. It has nothing to do with the partisan administrations, it has everything to do with the departmental chairs wanting more money. Rob, the attacks on liberalism are really getting pathetic. Guest DrTom Report post Posted November 21, 2002 Rob, as Outcast pointed out, this kind of pork-barrel bureacracy goes on regardless of the party affiliation of the current President. Scientists with nothing better to do will invent a bullshit study and get the government to fund it. The US government is the largest benefactor of scientific research in the world. I agree that we don't need to spend $40,000,000 studying the mating habits of Burmese sand frogs, and if we're going to spend that money on research, I'd like to see it go for USEFUL research. Guest I'm That Damn Zzzzz Report post Posted November 21, 2002 I found this gem in the book "Wasting America's Money" (published 1989?): $6000 spent to determine the effects of marijuana smoking on scuba divers' ability to withstand cold tempatures. The conclusion? "Caution should be suggested until cannabis action on swimmers can be determined."
Guest Tyler McClelland Report post Posted November 21, 2002 I heard one about the DOD where they spent $5,000 building a fence around a building that was condemned the next week.

Guest RobJohnstone Report post Posted November 21, 2002 Rob, the attacks on liberalism are really getting pathetic. It wasn't an attack against liberals. Read the book. It says clearly during the clinton administration, thus I said that. The reason I want to see the current budget is because I know it's still going on. Don't get to paraniod dude. --Rob
Guest HecateRose Report post Posted November 21, 2002 I am currently seeing proof of the government wasting money. I live in military housing in Germany, and they are spending a very large chunk of money painting the outsides of the apartment buildings different colors (they looked fine before, a little dirty but they are buildings for f***s sake). We were told they were doing this so that it will be easier to tell people where you live, ie I live in the green building, or the blue building, etc. Apparently we are to incompetent to read building numbers!! Anyway, this money could have been used to renovate more of the buildings that are substandard (they have even admitted most of these buildings are substandard). Instead of imporving our housing or lifestyle, they are spending money to make sure dumbass's don't get lost. It's insane.
Guest kkktookmybabyaway Report post Posted November 21, 2002 The funny thing about pork-barrel spending is that although many people bitch about it (I'm not different,), but also many people vote for these pols who keep the waste going because it brings money into their state/district...
