UFC story on ESPN....

Recommended Posts

Guest NoCalMike

On December 5th ESPN's "outside the lines" is doing a story about the UFC, namely the Shamrock/Ortiz fight. I was watching Around the horn last night and the host was repeatidly trying to put over the UFC/Pride/MMA as good shit, but the other sportswriters who admit to not have seeing any of it, didn't want any part of it. Half the panel seemed to not understand it was real, and the other half barely knew what it was.

Personally I have never understood how the mainstream writers embrace boxing as an art and how it is so great when it is probobaly the most corrupt sport out there, yet when it comes to MMA suddenly it is trash and does not deserve attention even though it is just a different fighting style than boxing.

I was angry that they compared Tough Man to UFC! It looks like they have not seen the recent UFC fights, they probably still have Tank Abbot in their collective minds.

the few shows that they put on Fox Sports had great fighters, like Matt Sierra and Frank Mir.

At least Max Kellerman who was on the ESPN2 boxing show, tried to give UFC a good arguement.

The panel was a bunch of old guys. When I turned the show on I knew that they where going to trash MMA.

One of the guys said that UFC isn't a sport because it's inside of a cage.

The dipshit Bob Ryan even claimed it wasn't real fighting. He said something like, "If these guys are so tough, why don't they fight for real?" Retard.

I don't think the way they promoted Ortiz-Shamrock is going to help the UFC any in terms of mainstream respect; the build it was given was straight out of the WWF. I don't hold it against Zuffa for trying to get more people to watch, but trying to be viewed as a legit sport from the sports media may be a lost cause.

Fox Sports needs to bring back the UFC show or move it to FX to get the public excited about the PPVs.

Screw those guys.

This is better than boxing (unless we're talking about an incredible fight like Ward vs. Gatti I).

Vendetta got me into MMA big and I just finished watching the Ultimate Ultimate 96 that I rented from Blockbuster. What a show. There were 3 incredible fights on there.

Oh well...after RAW I'm gonna pop in my new Pride DVDs and laugh at these ESPN idiots

BPS, rent UFC 22, just to see Frank Shamrock beat Tito Ortiz. It's good for a laugh.

I'll have to find that one.

The Blockbuster closest to me has nothing recent at all.By recent I mean post 1997.

Which Prides did you order? My personal favorites are 10 and 19. Not sure if 19 is out on DVD yet though.

I picked up 10 (on tape, they didn't have the DVD) and um...Clash of the Titans...whichever # that is. The one with Fujita vs. Takayama

That's a pretty good one, although Silva/ Oyama is stopped a bit early, while you'll be scratching your head over Herring/ Belfort.

I have Return of the Warrors, Cold Fury, Championship Chaos, and Collision Course on DVD, then I have Pride 19 on VHS. All of them were worth the money.

I have Pride 14 on DVD. It features an incredibly boring Lidell-Mezger match, and a very entertaining--and somewhat bizarre--Daijiro Matsui-Pele match. What was so strange was that Matsui actually threw a fucking dropkick, TWICE. A dropkick in a shoot fight, folks. By the way, he completely wiffed the first one, and grazed Pele a little (very little) on the second one.

Throw him into a spar with the likes of Vanderlei Silva. See if he lasts 10 seconds without crying like a little bitch.

10 has my favorite spots ever in a fight, with Sakuraba doing the cartwheel to avoid Gracie's kicks and the ending after the announcer says that Sakuraba's only beat people in his gym with the kimura.

Seeing Helio in that segment was awesome.
