Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted November 22, 2002 From the Smoking Gun On the heels of the report that few young Americans can find Iraq on a map comes word of a lawsuit alleging that many New York City teenagers (and their parents!) are actually unaware that McDonald's grub is pretty unhealthy. In a lawsuit filed against the fast food giant, obese teens like 19-year-old Jazlyn Bradley (5' 6", 270 pounds) and Ashley Pelman, 14, (4' 10", 170 pounds) claim that the company improperly drew them into the Golden Arches underworld, where Big Macs and Egg McMuffins lurk behind every corner, seductively offering empty calories and high-fat fixes. Bradley, Pelman, and 14-year-old Julian Tawfik (5' 9", 380 pounds) have filed the following affidavits in support of their class-action complaint against McDonald's, which yesterday (11/20) petitioned to have the "frivolous" case tossed by a federal judge in New York. (6 pages) McDonald's made me FAT! (Page 1 of 6) My absolute favorite is the 19 year old kid on page 5 and 6. During the period of September, 1998 to June, 2001, while I attended Walton High School, I went to and ate alone and sometimes with my friends three to five times a week I bet he ate alone more than he ate with his friends.. During the period of September, 1998 to June, 2001,I collected the prizes offered by McDonalds...I would try to collect more prizes than my friends. I wonder if his friends were from the kindergarten class? What self respecting teenager in high school would try to collect more Beanie Babies and Disney glasses than his friends? During the period of September, 1998 to June, 2001, I regulary ordered two meals a day from McDonalds.. I bet selling all the prizes he got was the only way he could afford to eat 2 times a day at McDonalds. Also, 1 meal at McDonalds is usually the equivalent of a normal full days meal in fat and calories, so 2 meals would be enough for 2 days. Translate that over 3 years and no wonder hes fat. But this is not McDonalds problem, IMO its the parents fault for not teaching their kids how to eat healthy and for not doing something about the weight gain earlier. Its almost as if the parents decided that they'd let their kids get fat and then sue McDonalds. I think McDonalds should counte with parental negligence that they let their kids get fat and didn't do anything about it. Damn, my mother was be on me every day to lose weight and I was only a like 10 pounds overweight.
Guest Kagato Otaku Report post Posted November 22, 2002 I see someone took that "Go to McDonald's and get one free FAT ASS!!" coupon to heart. This lawsuit could define frivolous.
Guest Kagato Otaku Report post Posted November 22, 2002 Reading the suit again, it sorta reminds me of the families involved in DWIs suing the bar for serving beer to the drunk driver. So obviously McDonald's in the wrong here. They should have realized these kids were already too freakin' fat.
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted November 22, 2002 Um. No. McDonalds shouldn't be forced to have to drag out the scale for every customer and weigh them, and if they weigh too much they can't eat at McDonalds. Then they would get sued by the fat people denied service at McDonalds. As for the Bar serving beer to a person who is drunk and then goes out and kills someone in a drunk driving accident, it is in fact that Bar's (or the bartender/server's) fault because they continued selling alcoholic beverages to a person who either had already had a large number of drinks or looked intoxicated. I don't see the comparison between the two.
Guest Kagato Otaku Report post Posted November 22, 2002 Y'know, I hate when my overly sarcastic posts dripping with verbal mockery get no-sold. It makes me sad we don't have a winking smiley here, and I might have to settle for one with his tongue sticking out after every post.
Guest MrRant Report post Posted November 22, 2002 You don't need individual scales just a big one infront of the cash register where you place your order that will weigh you and sense exactly how much you are allowed to have and then not allow you to buy 50 cheeseburgers if you are 4'10" and weigh the approximate size of a killer whale. Guest cynicalprofit Report post Posted November 22, 2002 I think Mcdonalds needs to let people know how bad there food is. I mean their nutrition isnt printed very clearly, atleast everytime I used to go to Mcdonalds. I really hope McDonalds loose because they are a horrible organization that doesnt promote proper nutrition and they only tend to hawk the price of their food, not its quality or nutrition, atleast in waht Ive seen. Still if they win, Im suing next.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted November 22, 2002 the company improperly drew them into the Golden Arches underworld, where Big Macs and Egg McMuffins lurk behind every corner, seductively offering empty calories and high-fat fixes. Who the hell is writing this stuff? Now i don't cry over McDonalds losing lawsuits like this, but honestly this lawsuit is such bullshit. There's no possible way any American in this health nut era could honestly not know that McDonalds is very unhealthy.
Guest Kagato Otaku Report post Posted November 22, 2002 Who the hell is writing this stuff? The header there? That'd be The Smoking Gun, who earn a living being cruel vindictive, awful bastards. Guest NoCalMike Report post Posted November 22, 2002 My biggest problem with this is. What were these kids thinking when they were just starting to get fat. Like say, you start normal weight, and over the course of the next 3 months you put on about 20 pounds. How could you not step back and think, "what am I doing/not doing that is causing me to put on this weight, and what should I change about my diet" ?
Guest EricMM Report post Posted November 22, 2002 "Hey Fatty, how about instead of money, we just settle with lifetime supply of big macs and fries?" "Sold!" "Hey they'll only live 5 more years anyways!"
Guest NoCalMike Report post Posted November 22, 2002 Maybe they should just give the people the money but tell them if they ever eat fast food again then they have to pay back double the money awarded.

Guest Musou Report post Posted November 22, 2002 I think that the kids who are suing are the ones who are at fault. They should've had the willpower to not walk into Mcdonald's and buy the fucking food in the first place. It's no one's fault but theirs. They could've been taught better, (maybe they were), but the walked their trudgy little legs in there and bought the food, no one forced them. Their parents didn't, and Mcdonald's didn't. How are they a horrible organization?? Have you heard of the Ronald McDonald house?? Or the fact that they give tons of money to charity? They don't promote proper nutrition or the quality- IT'S FAST FUCKING FOOD!!!!!!!!! And McDonald's has added healthier type foods to their menu btw. If you can't figure that a Big Mac is not good for you- you're a moron

Guest LaParkaMarka Report post Posted November 22, 2002 It's a frivolous lawsuit, but if someone thinks they have a chance of winning they'll go for it. McDonalds and it's ilk are contributing to the growing obesity in Americans (especially children) but it obviously isn't completely at fault. The majority of childhood obesity cases are caused by a combination of genetic as well as environmental factors. So little Jimmy fatass was probably genetically programmed to have the potential to get a lot fatter than everyone else, and then the "Toxic Environment" takes over from there. For anyone interested in the topic, check out: Wadding,T.A., Brownell K.D., and Foster G.D. (2002). Obesity: responding to the global epidemic. Journal of Consulting & Clinical Psychology, 70(3), 510-525 You can find it online via PsychInfo, if you're a university student. Interesting stuff.
Guest Spaceman Spiff Report post Posted November 22, 2002 McDonalds and it's ilk are contributing to the growing obesity in Americans (especially children) but it obviously isn't completely at fault There not at fault at all. Anyone w/ 1/10 of a brain knows "fast food = bad for you". They don't force their food on people, they just sit back & wait for people to come to them of their own free will. At least w/ the tobacco companies, you can argue the addictive nature of the product (I don't agree w/ suing them, either). Unless there's some proof that fast food is physically addictive, there's no chance to win this case.
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted November 22, 2002 Ok, first of all, not all fast food is bad for you, I mean Subway is considered fast food and they have a whole "diet" centered around eating there 2 times a day. McDonalds itself does have some "healthy" items on the menu (the salads w/o dressing, fruit/yogurt parfait, the grilled chicken sandwich are a couple of items) And some foods have addictive qualities. For instances the mouth feel that fat gives certain foods that is thought to be addictive, as well as sweets..This is one of the reasons people have cravings for Chocolate, because it has the mouth feel and the sweet tooth.. Guest starvenger Report post Posted November 22, 2002 It looks like Big Tobacco has been drained out by the scumbag lawyers, so now it's onto Big Fast Food... Which reminds me of the old joke, "What do you call a plane full of lawyers crashing into the sea?" "A good start" Seriously though, doesn't it seem that there are too many Lionel Hutz-type lawyers? Guest kkktookmybabyaway Report post Posted November 22, 2002 What's going to happen is that more fatties will bring their lawsuits to light, and in 20 or so years Ronald McDonald will be shelling out billions of dollars because some pinhead jury felt bad for Tommy, who ate at McDonald's every day for 20 years and is now 500 lbs and about ready to die from a heart attack... Guest JLuv0309 Report post Posted November 23, 2002 This is the kind of crap we get when people don't take responsibilty for their own actions...it's not even your job to be a parent anymore. No, leave that to movies, tv, and fast food restaurants. That way, when they F--- up, it's not your fault. And that's how this society operates. Hilarious...it's just absolutely hilarious. At this point I just laugh. What else can you do?
Guest KingOfOldSchool Report post Posted November 23, 2002 Everytime I read something like this I feel like walking outside and kicking someone in the face. Seriously, there's no personal responsibility anymore. Although I hate the argument against big tobacco as well, I can still see some points the anti-tobacco people claim. But as far as this goes, you're eating greasy fries dipped in oil and hamburgers.... of course it's not healthy for you. I'm not opposed to eating this stuff every once in a while, but of course if you eat two of these meals a day for three years, you're gonna get fat. Anyone with half a brain could figure that out. Guest kkktookmybabyaway Report post Posted November 23, 2002 "Seriously, there's no personal responsibility anymore. Although I hate the argument against big tobacco as well, I can still see some points the anti-tobacco people claim." Agreed. The most disgusting thing about the whole lawsuit frenzy was the fact the states used that $$$ for other things than health care of sickened smokers and youth smoking prevention programs. Another funny aspect of it all was when the lawyers threw a fit because some judge said their billion-dollar paydays were "too much." It was all a big farce... Guest Y2BigJ Report post Posted November 23, 2002 This lawsuit absouletly makes me sick. If someone is not intelligent enought to realize Big Macs=Big ass, they should not be allowed to live. It's disgusting how parents and these kids do not have the will power to eat healthy and then try to make a quick buck out of it. I hope this case is thrown out fast.
