Guest The Superstar Report post Posted November 24, 2002 Yeah I'm curious, because I'm getting a computer for my room, and after an eMachines with all the rebates and stuff from bestbuy you can get a system (1.8GHz, 40gb hd, dvd rom/cd-rw), 15" moniter and printer for $500. How reliable are they, pros & cons, etc.?
Guest treble charged Report post Posted November 24, 2002 I have an eMachines computer here at school, and I haven't had any problems with it, besides the monitor button sort of breaking. Of course, mine is only a few months old, so I don't know if that is much help to you.
Guest El Psycho Diablo Report post Posted November 24, 2002 I wouldn't. From somebody who repairs 'em, I wouldn't trust an emachines as far as I could throw it. My advice would be to save up some extra cash and get a Dell, but that's me.
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted November 24, 2002 Ugh. Emachines are ok, but they are really not upgradable (ie you often cannot add new drives, video cards, sound cards etc.) and the video/sound cards are often generic and not very good. Im also willing to bet its a Celeron (not good) or an AMD (I have a Duron, a real nice processor..no difference from an Intel processor except the cheaper price)
Guest DrTom Report post Posted November 24, 2002 When they first came out, they were TERRIBLE. Probably the worst PCs on the market at that time. I couldn't recommend that someone buy one in good conscience, and working on them sucked. They've improved since then, but if I were going to buy a PC, I'd go with Dell or Atlas Micro. Also, if you can find a power seller on Ebay with a legit PC business (and there are a lot of them), you can get very powerful PCs for under $700.
Guest hardyz1 Report post Posted November 24, 2002 I had an eMachines from October 99 until earlier this year and it never gave me any real problems. And now you can get an infinitely better computer than the one I got for the same price. Wanna know how bad that computer was? Celeron 400 32 MB RAM 4.3 GB Hard Drive Adequate onboard graphics and sound. And the fucker cost me $400. The one I got this year is twice as good and only cost $385 shipped. Guest razazteca Report post Posted November 24, 2002 do get the computer just because of the REBATES, you will be forced to joined some ISP for a year most likely from MSN or AOL at $25 a month and if you decide to not to fulfill the contract you will pay penalties. And then there is the chance that you might never get the cash rebate at all.
Guest Matt Young Report post Posted November 26, 2002 Mine is ok. I got it in April 2001 after a horrendous time using a Dreamcast followed by AOL TV. I, too, got the Best Buy rebate deal of the time. I ended up with an eMachine sporting a 10 gig hard drive, 32 megs of RAM (which I added to immediately), a 17" monitor, a Canon printer, printer cable, paper, and a microphone for $400, before rebates. It's a good deal if you can't afford anything else. You actually get a great value considering what you pay.
