So I canceled my AOL free trial today

Recommended Posts

Guest Eagan469

My cable connection went down last week, so last weekend I used one of the AOL starter disks and signed up for a 30 day free trial. My cable connection was fixed on Monday, and I decided today to cancel the subscription.

I call the number, and I get "Glen" on the phone.

"What is your name, account address"

Me: *blah blah blah*

"How can I help you?"

Me: I'd like to cancel my AOL account

"Ok sir, what did you enjoy about AOL?"

Me: It was fast for dial-up I guess

"Why don't you stay with it for the rest of the month? Only 20.99 etc...."

Me: My cable's back

"What can't you do with AOL that you can do with cable?"

Me: Everything

(at this point he starts SHOUTING at me)

"SIR, WHY DON'T YOU WANT AOL?"

(I hang up)

Jesus christ, what a fucking scam. Imagine an elderly person having to go through that shit.

Oh yeah, after I responded that it was "kind of fast", he gave this really fake laugh and said:

"It was fast, eh?"

I had been on AOL for five years until earlier this year when I decided to cancel. I called to cancel and the guy I talked to (I think it was also Glen) gave me two free months of the service. But I forgot to call and cancel it for good after those two months, so I ended up paying for one month. I called to cancel again, and this time I got a chick. She gave me another two free months. This time I remembered to call again before the months were up.

Moral of the story: AOL sucks, but at least they gave me some free time.

heh

I called back a few days ago, and after listening to another guy give me a 10 minute speech, he said they'd cancel my account at the end of the month, and that a verification would be sent via certified mail within 10 days to confirm it.

So it turns out to be a happy ending :D

Well it is their job to give you the "hard sell" to try and get you to stay with AOL.

nothing is totally free.

I wonder how many times you can call and get two free months?

Sign up, get free month, pay a month. Call to cancel, get two free months..pay a month, call to cancel..

If you did it 3 Times you could almost get a full year of AOhelL..and only pay for like 2 months..

I have AOL, and I only keep it because I find the e-mail service to be very convienent(sp).

No wonder AOL never makes any money. I bet half of their users get the service for free.

AOL can go to hell because I have to pay phone tolls to use their services since I live 30 miles outside of Sacramento. I went through the free trial and cancelled through snail mail. Avoided the pain of the telemarketer hard sell and worth the 34 cents I spent at the time.

NetZero can also kiss my ass because they forcefully cancelled my subscription and the reason they gave me in a nutshell is that they couldn't make money off of me.

Fuck AOL. Fuck NetZero. Go Earthlink, for they have yet to give me pain.

Of all my friends, only one is on AOL (which he gets ridiculed for), and he's phoned up to cancel many times, but they keep offering free months to him, so he's been getting it free for nearly a year!
