Guest Smell the ratings!!! Report post Posted November 25, 2002 The Lions won the coin toss in overtime against the Bears. Mornhinweg chose to kick. Discuss.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted November 25, 2002 It isn't unprecedent, just not common. Often Times, Teams will decide against taking the ball because they offense can't do the job or they know that the other side can't score in those conditions or something else... It is not unprecedented.
Guest MD2020 Report post Posted November 25, 2002 One of two things: A. He's an idiot. I mean, really an idiot. or B. He's trying to get fired for some reason. I lean towards A, because he's doing a fine job on his own in getting fired, but you really really really got to be stupid to elect to kick.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted November 25, 2002 I didn't see any of the game but maybe the Chicago kicker was bombing at the Field Goals...so he figured that letting him have the ball first would deflate their emotions so much the Bear defense would dismantle...Ah fuck it...I can't explain it. Guest the pinjockey Report post Posted November 25, 2002 He did it because he wanted the wind. But yes it is still retarded. Maybe he is gunning for another high draft pick. Maybe get a receiver in there like Charles Rogers.
Guest hardyz1 Report post Posted November 25, 2002 Ignore the stupidity that was here.
Guest Will Scarlet Report post Posted November 25, 2002 True. A high draft pick would be useful. Any major CB's coming out of college this year? That is supposedly what the Lions need the most. I do not blame the coach. I blame the fact that it is the Lions. I am sorry, but I have always believed the Lions are somehow cursed. It seems like there is always some stupid mishap during every season even when they did good. For instance, the year they could not win outside. They were like 9-0 in domes, and 1-6 outside or something. Or the year they were 8-2, beat the Rams, and look like they may be headed to the Super Bowl...before dropping the next 6 games, going 8-8 and losing to the Redskins in the first round. It's pathetic. Though, I do agree that Mornhinweg is an idiot, and should be fired after the season. They should have done him in after the 2-14 debacle that was last season. Though, last season was fun, as the Lions found new ways to blow 3rd quarter leads each week. Too bad they did not go 0-16. Damn you Minnesota Vikings! Damn you to hell! Guest bravesfan Report post Posted November 25, 2002 No point in beating any more teams if they can't get to the playoffs, eh? BTW, Morhninweig was also hoping to get good field position, if the Bears failed on the first drive and then punted. God knows their offense can't march the ball 80 yards down the field. EDIT: True. A high draft pick would be useful. Any major CB's coming out of college this year? That is supposedly what the Lions need the most. They will be targeting an offensive threat in Charlie Rogers from Michigan St., most likely. If they're able to go after a "shut-down" corner, they'll draft Marcus Truvant from Washington St.
Guest The Man in Blak Report post Posted November 25, 2002 World class idiocy. That sends a message to your offense that you don't faith in them and it puts a lot of pressure on a defense which, honestly, obviously has problems stopping a lot of teams, let alone the crippled and stumbling Bears. Losing the game was bad enough...but I think the reverberations in the locker room are going to be more damaging.
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted November 25, 2002 This was the dumbest move since last year when Dave Campo elected to kick an extra point when they scored being down by 16 late in the 4th quarter There is NO excuse for it. Just plain dumb.
Guest Will Scarlet Report post Posted November 25, 2002 I doubt it will matter much. As far as I understand, the locker room hates the coach anyway, and feel that he is an incompetent boob who is not cut out to be a coach. At least that what I heard a few months back. Bring back Wayne Fontes! Okay...just kidding.
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted November 26, 2002 Its pretty dumb.. I don't know how it compares to Mike Martz electing not to kick a field goal to tie the game with :10 left in the Skins/Rams game. The field goal would have been less than 30 yards, practically a gimme. Instead they try to go for the winning TD (which I honestly thought they would get..) and instead Arrington gets a hold of Warner and bam..the rest is history.. I always thought it was play for the tie now and the win in overtime, but I guess I was wrong..
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted November 26, 2002 On the road you always play for the tie. Mike Martz is an idiot...but unlike Marty, he at least took a team to the SuperBowl. Marty has no excuse.
Guest DrTom Report post Posted November 26, 2002 Considering that 28% of the time, the team that gets the ball first scores without the other team even touching the ball, there's no way you yield possession in OT. This is another example of why the NFL's OT system sucks, though.
Guest DrTom Report post Posted November 26, 2002 I don't know how it compares to Mike Martz electing not to kick a field goal to tie the game with :10 left in the Skins/Rams game. Um... because he's trying to win? There were 17 seconds on the clock when the ball was snapped. An incomplete pass while taking a shot at the end zone still leaves them plenty of time for the FG. It was second down, I'm pretty sure (they spiked the ball on first down after Canidate's run), so even if they try a run and it's stopped, they still have enough time to spike it again. I think Martz made the absolute right call in going for the TD. BPS cited the maxim about playing for the tie on the road, but I fail to see what's wrong with trying to WIN, regardless to the venue. I've been a HUGE Martz detractor at numerous points this season, but I think he was right this time.
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Report post Posted November 26, 2002 I agree with Tom. There was plenty of time left for Warner to throw a pass into the end zone. If they would have called any play besides "Slow guy races world class athlete to sideline-48", there would have been time left for the field goal even if Warner's pass wasn't completed. Just for fun: Mike Martz is an ass.
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted November 26, 2002 To make matters worse. He gave the Bears another play when they would of had to punt. This is dumbest thing a coach has done maybe ever. Dave Camp kicking the PAT is nothing, because they would of still been down by 14 points if they had gone for 2. Running the balll when all you have to do his take a knee is stupid but it's not putting the ball in the hands of the other team in sudden death O.T.
