Guest Incandenza Report post Posted November 25, 2002 I wouldn't call any of those one hit wonders; they're more like darlings of MTV's old Alternative Nation program. If you wanna talk about that, then you must include Material Issue's "Valerie Loves Me." As for what I consider to be a one hit wonder--that is, a single that received major radio/video airplay by a band who dropped into obscurity shortly thereafter (and I don't think any of the ones you listed were that well known), I'd say my favorite is Harvey Danger's "Flagpole Sitta." Catchy but not annoying, it was a good song that was everywhere back in '99. Too bad the band never went anywhere after that; what's especially a shame is that they released a very good disc last year, King James Version, which was met with widespread apathy. Guest JangoFett4Hire Report post Posted November 25, 2002 I think "What Girls Want" by Material Issue was more well known... that has one of the all time greatest riffs ever, I think...
Guest Incandenza Report post Posted November 25, 2002 But "Valerie Loves Me" has the greatest chorus ever, man!
Guest JangoFett4Hire Report post Posted November 25, 2002 I don't even remember that one... what CD is it on? The one with Motorcycle on the cover?
Guest Incandenza Report post Posted November 25, 2002 It was on International Pop Overthrow. It had a picture of the band on the cover.
Guest Kinetic Report post Posted November 25, 2002 If we're talking about the actual song, then I don't know. Nothing strikes me like "My Sharona" (not their only hit, per say, but their only hit that matters). If we're talking the actual band, then it's probably Blur: They had one major hit in America with a total novelty song, despite releasing several good-to-great albums and having a massive following in England. If not that, then "Who Let The Dogs Out?" Who! Who! Who! Who! Who!
Guest papacita Report post Posted November 25, 2002 Sporty Thieves "No Pigeons"...a response to TLC's "No Scrubs".
Guest JangoFett4Hire Report post Posted November 25, 2002 My Sharona? That's 1979!!!
Guest Kinetic Report post Posted November 25, 2002 I realize that. I was saying that nothing in the 90s struck me as being as good a one hit wonder song as "My Sharona."
Guest JangoFett4Hire Report post Posted November 25, 2002 OK, sorry I misunderstood Mr. Kinetic... *sings "Charmless Man" to get on Kinetic's good side*
Guest Will Scarlet Report post Posted November 25, 2002 I would have to go with Dee-Lite and their "Groove is in the Heart" song.
Guest converge241 Report post Posted November 25, 2002 "Blur: They had one major hit in America with a total novelty song, despite releasing several good-to-great albums and having a massive following in England. " at least they had "boys and girls" too but they will be damned for that one song forever in USA
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted November 25, 2002 according to Spin. Beck and Radiohead are also one-hit wonders. But spin knows shit.
Guest converge241 Report post Posted November 25, 2002 well technically they are but Spin is saying it in a "wink-wink" way based off of "Loser" and "Loser" they had the one big hit and then kept making better music but the "hits" werent there so they are one hit wonders, just not in a derogatory way cause beck and radiohead are great (radiohead moreso though)
Guest LooseCannon Report post Posted November 25, 2002 Beck's had verifiable hits post- "Loser."
Guest Kotzenjunge Report post Posted November 25, 2002 Wait, Spin turned on Beck and Radiohead? Tsk tsk. By the way, who do they say is the savior of rock this month? My vote for best one-hit wonder: Popular -- Nada Surf. Fo sheez, Kotzenjunge
Guest Nevermortal Report post Posted November 25, 2002 Beck's had verifiable hits post- "Loser." 'Tis true. "Where Its At" & "New Pollution" were all over the radio during the Odelay period.
Guest Incandenza Report post Posted November 25, 2002 Radiohead were never a singles band, but they did have at least two "hits," in the forms of "Creep" and "Just." Of course, as it has already been stated, Spin is full of shit. EDIT: I've been having trouble spelling, lately.

You're damn right "Flagpole Sitta"'s a great song! That's the very first MP3 I ever downloaded (talk about useless trivia), and still gets a bit of spin on my computer to this day. I never heard any songs off King James Version, or even saw it in stores, but its a good disc? I'll fire up the ol' KaZaA Lite and check it out. I also second "No Pigeons" being a funny parody, however I have a "remix" (which I put in quotes because it's one of those ones where it's not a remix so much as a "part II" since they change the beat AND the lyrics) which is even funnier because it's even more chauvinistic. Sporty Thievz was a decent group too, too bad they're not around anymore since one of their members was killed a few months back (or was it last year?). How about Tonic's "You Wanted More"? I always liked that song.
Guest Musou Report post Posted November 25, 2002 The Verve. "Freshmen" says it all....
Guest Ravenbomb Report post Posted November 25, 2002 'No Rain' by Blind Melon. Too bad Shannon OD'ed or even got into drugs in the first place, 'cause that would've been one great band...
Guest Bosstones Fan Report post Posted November 26, 2002 You guys have named off some fabulous picks, but I gotta go with Deep Blue Something's Breakfast At Tiffany's as the best one-hit wonder of the 90's, simply because I have more memories attached to that song than any other.
Guest Kinetic Report post Posted November 26, 2002 On the flipside, my least favorite one hit wonder of the 90s is director Baz Luhrman's godawful song about sunscreen. The selling point of this particular single always eluded me, but that's usually the case with novelty hits. And, yes, SPIN did label both Beck and Radiohead one hit wonders, much to the chagrin of their fanbase. I can see a lot of people in America knowing little about Radiohead aside from "Creep," but the Beck nod is inexcusable. I still hear "Devil's Haircut" on rock radio to this day, not to mention that "The New Pollution" and "Sexx Laws" have both gotten fairly regular rotation on MTV. Shit, I once heard "Tropicalia" in Kentucky Fried Chicken. The man is not a one hit wonder.

Guest kingkamala Report post Posted November 26, 2002 Was Faith No More 90's? Now I know this'll get some people pissed off big time but Faith No More were technically one hit wonders seeing how they only had one mainstream major hit.

They were close, Epic ( I hope that's the song you were referring to) came out in 1989. Oh, and my favoirte One-hit would have to be: Better than Ezra - Good

I personally mark out for Hum - Stars Tripping Daisy - I Got a Girl Charlatans UK - The Only One Screaming Trees - Nearly Lost You BUTT Trumpet - You're Ugly Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye I know i'm missing some... dude, i don't know what your definition is, but screaming trees and hum are not one-hit wonders. both those bands still have sizable fan bases. i have many friends that still listen to hum, and they make good albums. you might as well say liz phair was a one-hit wonder cause her only single that got significant attention was 'supernova'. and saying jeff buckley is a one-hit wonder is akin to saying the velvet underground was a two-hit wonder for 'sweet jane' and 'rock & roll' or the pixies were a one-hit wonder for 'monkey gone to heaven'. jeff buckley's got a pretty big and VERY loyal fanbase, and he's already grown into a kind of quasi-legend.
