ok, i downloaded about 200 minutes of johnny cash from kazaa. besides the regulars like 'i walk the line' and 'ring of fire', i have a bunch of his obscure shit going on. needless to say, it all rules!

You know, I've actually been meaning to try and listen/get into some Johnny Cash for the longest time. I queued up some stuff right now... any album recommendations for next time I cruise Amoeba/Streetlight?

here are some classic cash moments...

i walk the line

ballad of ira hayes

a boy named sue

ring of fire

flesh and blood

man in black

folsom prison blues

in the jailhouse now

one piece at a time

understand your man

he also does an excellent version of soundgarden's 'rusty cage'. i enjoy it way more than the original

another song that rules is hos duet with bob dylan from nashville skyline... 'one too many mornings'

I don't believe "One Too Many Mornings" appears on Nashville Skyline. "Girl From The North Country" does and it's shockingly mediocre, especially compared to the original. They apparently recorded an album worth of duets that, to the best of my knowledge, never amounted to anything.

This looks like a job for (duh-duh-DUHHHH~!) B00tleg Man!

Think of all the great music that'd be lost without b00tlegs...

The interesting thing about this review though is that it rates it 9 stars yet goes on to say "the performances are very loose, first time trys. This is a 'must-have' disc for historical reasons, but it will probably not be one that you will want to play every day."

I was just listening to his cover of "Personal Jesus." In Cash's hands, the song is sorta sexy.

well whatever dude, 'lay lady lay' is a great song! besides, it's all about cash, not dylan.

A Boy Named Sue is one funny song.

Some of his other songs that I like but haven't been mentioned are "Hot Rod Lincoln", "Cocaine Blues", "San Quentin" and "Ghost Riders In The Sky".

I concede that "Lay Lady Lay" is good. But any album containing "Country Pie" and "Peggy Day" cannot get an approval from me.

I could never take Mr. Cash seriously after hearing "Man in Black." I mean, it's a nice sentiment and, yeah, there's a whole lot of problems in the world, but I think there might be more meaningful ways of making a statement. Then again, maybe I missed the oh so sublte satire of the piece.

Wasn't he supposed to record a version of NIN's "hurt" or "closer" for his next album? I remember hearing that somewhere.

It's "Hurt." I can't imagine him doing "Closer"--just imagine Cash singing "I want to fuck you like an animal." The album in question is already out; we've been playing it at the station.

He also covered One by U2. It's actually a pretty good cover. I like it more than U2's version anyway, but that's just because I hate U2 moreso than I like Johnny Cash.

And therein lay my interest. Tis a pity.

Cash is simply amazing.

... Although I don't understand how that white-haired man on Larry King last night beat him up and stole his clothes...

Johnny Cash is fucking kickass. Folsom Prison Blues is the greatest country song ever written.

It seems like a lot of people cover "One." It's such a well-written song that it makes me wish it wasn't U2 who composed it.
