Guest Spaceman Spiff Posted November 26, 2002 Report Posted November 26, 2002 Saw this note over on CRZ's board: From RPGamer.com In the world of RPGs there are really only two big boys, Square and Enix. Well, that list just shrank a bit. RPGamer has just received word from Japan that the two videogame giants are going to be merging. The merger is set to take place starting November 26, and by April 1, 2003, the new company will be known as Enix Square. This merger is reportedly taking place to position the joint company as a serious competitor to the large third party developers such as Electronic Arts. "In the ever-changing world of entertainment software, the most important issue facing companies today is how quickly they can grow as the marketplace and opportunities for business expand and diversify," said a financial statement released by Enix today. "Enix and Square's response to this issue is the merger announced today...Together, we will aim to become producer of the highest-quality digital contents in the world." Officially, Square is being disbanded and Enix will be absorbing the company's assets and liabilities, while Square's current president, Yoichi Wada, will head up Enix Square. The two companies are planning a press conference for 3:30pm on Tuesday. We will have the details from this event as soon as they are available. Myself, I'm not a big RPG gamer, but I have played all or part of most of the Dragon Warrior games, so I do have a passing interest in the story.
Guest Insane Bump Machine Posted November 26, 2002 Report Posted November 26, 2002 a game featuring both the final fantasy universe and the dragon quest universe would probably become the best selling game in japan ever. But I don't know if they'll do it. Could be complicated to incorporate both styles into one big game.
Guest Renegade Posted November 26, 2002 Report Posted November 26, 2002 I thought Square had some connection with EA?
Guest razazteca Posted November 27, 2002 Report Posted November 27, 2002 Did they work together to make Chrono Trigger?
Guest cartman Posted November 27, 2002 Report Posted November 27, 2002 SquareEA did make a few games I do believe so i'm curious to this as well...
Guest EricMM Posted November 27, 2002 Report Posted November 27, 2002 AFAIK SquareEA was just a publishing thing. EA would publish FF, PE, etc. over here and Square would publish all of EA's sports games in Japan. EA didn't "make" RPG's (shudder). But I'm still confused as to why Square would want to compete with its distributer in either way. A FF/DQ crossover would kill in Japan however.
Guest Jobber of the Week Posted November 27, 2002 Report Posted November 27, 2002 Well, they kept losing money. It doesn't suprise me to see them get swallowed. Although Enix doesn't really have any "names." They'd be wise to make some hirings and cut the crap positions from Square. They damn well need a new music guy, as Nobuo Uematsu has totally lost the magic, whether Japan loves him or not.

Guest Jobber of the Week Posted November 28, 2002 Report Posted November 28, 2002 FFX was especially sad. I mean, this is a friggin' PS2. The thing doesn't have a weak sound chip. It can play Vice City in DTS format. Yet all of Nobuo's music for FFX sounded like the same SNES syntesizer he's been using forever. I could stand SNES-like tunes on PSX, but to hear this obviously fake music on PS2 is inexcusable. At least Mitsuda uses instruments that sound real.

Screw you guys! *cries in the corner while clutching a cd of FFVII music*
