Bringing the Intercontinental Title Back

Recommended Posts

OK...I have a feeling, deep in my heart, that the Intercontinental title isn't dead and gone for good.

They didn't keep the European title gone when they first killed it off, remember.

So...if they do decide to bring the INtercontinental Championship back onto the air, how should they do it? Tournament? Battle Royal?

the Hardcore title is the one that should be found in the garbage. As for the IC how about a Dusty finish for the WCW belt then have Val Venis & Bishoff announce a Battle Royal for it.

I bet they will bring it back someday. When, I have no idea. But they should have a tourny to decides who gets the title. Don't just hot shot it to someone *cough*Trips*cough*

Not a bad idea actually. Well, Duggan and the trash can suck, but I like the originality of someone just showing up with it and defending it. Have a great IC champion come back, bitch out the WWE for retiring a belt that he put so much of his life into and that means so much to him, and start taking on all comers. The main problem with this theory is that there hasn't been a great IC champion (great wrestlers, not great champions) in at least 5 years, so no one would really be available.

I think something like that would work better than the standard tournament that's been done so many times before that would give a two week interest in the belt before it gets passed around to the jobbers again.

EvilHomer: Eeeh...Jericho was a pretty good IC Champ when he had the belt...

So Was Kurt Angle.

Those two unfortunately are in main event feuds...

I say get either Christian or Lance Storm out of tag teams and have them revive the IC title.

Sorta like Trips getting the big Gold belt, and just defeding it all the time.

I ay have Steph bring it back. It'll be less likely to show up on RAW since they got rid of it and trips is there.

...you know, a funny thought came to my mind...

What if tonight Steph decided to bring back the IC title for the heck of it.

I would laugh my ass off if I read that in the spoilers.

Oh...and I'm a firm believer in minimal titles. But a secondary title is needed.

So I say...if they re-unify the rosters:

WWE World

Intercontinental

Cruiserweight

Hardcore

Tag

Women's

If they keep rosters split...

WWE World Championship (Floating)

Intercontinental (Raw or Smackdown)

European (Raw or Smackdown)

Hardcore (Raw)

Cruiserweight (Smackdown)

Tag (Floating)

Women's (Floating)

I like that plan, Chris.

I, personally, think that whatever they do to bring the IC title back, Paul Heyman needs to book the whole storyline for it, at least in the beginning. Let him concentrate on putting some emotional thrust behind the belt and establish it. Heyman isn't the greatest ever or anything, but I think he could really make it special again in present continuity.

Floating champs sorta ruin the whole ideals of the split. Especially when you end up with two seperate roster vying for the same title without interaction, it takes it out of the defense plus all the switching after losses.

That's the big problem with the split. Two seperate championships run into the either/or problem.

The WWE Championship is generally viewed as a more important title than RAW's Heavyweight Championship (Big Fake Gold belt, etc.). Some people hold the RAW Tag Belts in higher regard due to lineage than that Smackdown Tag Belts. And some people hold the SD Tags in higher regard because of the talent and matches involved with them recently. One belt(s) is always going to be devalued, it seems. If they can solve that problem, then they will have greatly added to the split's effectiveness.

They should have just disputed the titles in the first place and they wouldn't have run into that problem.

I think the plan would have worked better and that problem could have been escaped if they had simply gone with the rumored plans of recreating WCW and splitting the roster up that way. Two WWE shows is what, IMHO, makes one belt devalued in comparison to another.

The way the fans reacted to it; and the way that it was so devalued in the first place; and the writing; and how Vince generally regards WCW; and how they didn't go after nay of the big names, among a number of other factors, it wouldn't have worked.

I really don't think they should bring back the IC Title. It would be another case of Vince just pressing the rewind button. If they ever want people to get interested in stips again, they need to have some of them stick.

What would you suggest then...make a brand new "secondary" title?

And if so...what would that title be?

Well lets assume that HHH will screw RVD out of the title at the PPV. The next night on Raw RVD challenges HHH to a match for the title. Well somehow RVD wins the match and believes he has won the Raw Title so he goes to grab it. Enter Bischoff to inform RVD that the contract for the match said it was for the IC title which HHH still technically holds. So now RVD is IC Champion and feuding with HHH who is still Raw Champ thanks to screwing RVD on the wording of the contract. Somehow get Jericho involved so he can feud with RVD over the IC so that they can have Jericho win the IC right before RVD wins the Raw title from HHH. And involve Booker T for those Face/Face vs. Heel/heel tag team matches WWf loves to run on free tv.

Now if HHH was capable of allowing someone else to look good other than himself that plan would work great. RVD holding the IC title and involved in the main storyline on Raw where he's allowed to look good would help the IC title. I could go for watching RVD feud with HHH over Raw title and with Jericho over the IC at the same time.

But of course HHH would never go along with allowing RVD to look good at his own expense. Besides do we honestly believe that Raw's writing Staff is capable of writing a feud involving three guys and two belts?

I had forgotten 100% that the IC title wasn't even around anymore, untill I saw this thread...

...that says a lot as to the worth of the belt for the past while, it hadn't truly meant anything for years.

I would use the midcarders to beef up the tag division. You don't really need a secondary title until you end the split, and the midcard suddenly increases in size.

I don't really agree with that.

In my opinion, at times, the Intercontinental Championship helped to build up midcarders to be bigger stars...more main event material.

Examples being Rock, unfortunately HHH, Bret Hart, Randy Savage, Austin, Kurt Angle, IMO Chris Jericho...if he ever got a higher title it could work for RVD...Edge...

The IC Title has a purpose.

I think the IC Title should stay dead and buried. If you need a secondary title, just give both shows TV Titles. Hell, it'd probably work wonders for Matt Hardy since he could boast about how the title is great because it gives the viewing public it's daily dose of Mattitude. On RAW, I wouldn't really know who should hold it, but I think it should be a face(especially since Matt's a heel) and both guys should get at least a 2 month reign.

Also, they should use the old WCW rule of the TV Titles being defended on every show(just RAW and Smackdown, obviously) just to add some suspense of the titleholder being able to lose at any time.

The problem with that theory is that it keeps the IC title devalued. RVD doesn't care about the title he already has, he just wants to go after the World title. No arguments about whether RVD should be in the World title scene or not because that's not the point. When the IC title was held in it's highest regard, good performers were fighting for the IC title, and only the IC title. I think that was the biggest problem with the IC title towards the end, it's a known fact that it's a secondary title, but when the wrestlers going for it treat it as a consolation prize, nobody cares about it.

Well it's possible to make it look like he cares about holding both titles. Something like keeping both belts out of the hands of "evil".

But like i said they would need good writers to truly make a 3 man 2 title feud work. WWe of course doesn't have that.

Heyman should book Raw and Smackdown...
