ok

Robert Altman vs. Barry Levinson

This isn't even funny

GROUP A

Steven Soderbergh vs. Francis Ford Coppola

Lumet WOULD have won, should he have made it

David Lean vs. Orson Welles

When it comes down to it, Lean is too long winded

Frank Capra vs. Woody Allen

If anything simply for "Mr. Smith goes to Washington"

GROUP B

John Ford vs. Joel Coen

Not enough of a western fan to advance Ford again

Steven Speilberg vs. Vincente Minnelli

This is fucked up but I've not seen enough Minnelli to go the other way.

Quentin Tarantino vs. Howard Hawks

I love Tarantino, but he would not be working today if not for Hawks

William Wyler vs. Spike Lee

Lee by default.

GROUP C

Martin Scorsese vs. Paul Thomas Anderson

As great as Anderson may become, Scorsese will forever be one of the greatest directors of all time.

Stanley Kubrick vs. Akira Kurosawa

Kubrick, as great as he is, really didn't stand a chance

Mike Nichols vs. David Cronenberg

Nichols really shouldn't advance but I'm up against a wall here.

John Huston vs. Fritz Lang

Huston is brilliant. He's just not Fritz Lang

GROUP D

Oliver Stone vs. George Cuckor

I don't want to advance Stone either but at least he made "Platoon" and "JFK" while Cuckor's films always seemed too harmless to be great.

Wolfgang Petersen vs. Alfred Hitchcock

I don't see why Verne didn't just declare this one in the initial post

Sam Raimi vs. Billy Wilder

Being a Deadite I I hate to do this. But Sam Raimi never made "Sunset Boulevard"

Luis Bunuel vs. Elia Kazan

At least one director needs to be representing the art film genre. Bunuel is as good as any.

That's it. Stone, Nichols, Lee, and Speilberg really need to go.

Group A

Robert Altman vs Barry Levinson - Eeeh. Can I just vote for D.W. Griffith here instead? Don't like anything Altman has done. Like 3 things Levinson did. 3 out of 21 is better than 0.

Steven Sodeberg vs Francis Ford Coppola - Can't believe Soderbergh actually got out of the first round. No real contest here. The recent years haven't been kind to Coppola but the 70's era is still better than most.

David Lean vs Orson Welles - If Lean ever made a movie less than 5 hours long I'd watch it. I truly hope I don't have to explain why I voted for Welles.

Frank Capra vs Woody Allen - Because his name is Woody and because he didn't direct It's a Wonderful Life.

Group B

John Ford vs Joel Coen - I will always vote against the Coens no matter who it's against.

Steven Spielberg vs Vincente Minnelli - I finally figured out who Minnelli was this round. haha. That made it difficult once I found out he made Cabin in the Sky and I Dood It. But oh well, he's no Spielberg.

Quentin Tarentino vs Howard Hawks - Tarantino up against one of his two favorite directors. Gotta go Hawks because he hasn't made me wait so friggin long to finally get another movie. Granted he can't, because he's dead, but still.

William Wyler vs Spike Lee - Just to be PC.

Group C

Martin Scorsce vs PT Anderson - As much as I loved Boogie Nights I gotta go with Scorsese because Anderson has kinda went off the deep end ever since that one good movie and gotten really arty.

Stanly Kubrick vs Akira Kurosawa - I respect Akira and all but once again, his movies just aren't enjoyable to watch. Technically good, worth seeing once, but not multiple times like Clockwork Orange or Full Metal Jacket or The Killing.

Mike Nichols vs David Croneberg - I have absolutely not idea why Nichols made the list much less the second round.

John Huston vs Fritz Lang - I have to vote for Fritz because I'm not allowed to vote for F.W. Murnau.

Group D

Oliver Stone vs George Cukor - Can't understand Cukor making the cut either.

Wolfgang Petersen vs Alfred Hitchcock - Can't we just give Hitchcock a buy until the finals?

Sam Raimi vs Billy Wilder - One of the most inovative directors around versus the queerest. Well, now actually that I said that I'm not sure which one I was for to begin with. I think I'll vote for Sam.

Luis Bunuel vs Elia Kazan - Cause he's actually made something.

What did I tell you about bashing Billy Wilder? It isn't allowed in this thread. If you wanna explain why don't like him than go right ahead but personal name calling won't be tolerated.

Well let me see, why would I not like a director? I guess because I DON'T LIKE HIS MOVIES. That's novel, eh? Double Indemnity, Sunset Blvd and Stalag 17 were great but I thought the rest were crap. I hate Some Like It Hot so much that it almost ruins the three movies of his I do like. I guess since we're not allowed to not like Billy Wilder we shouldn't bother to vote? Why not just go ahead and give it to him then? Man, you guys need to lighten up. Personal name calling, hahaha. So Billy Wilder is reading this from beyond the grave?

Oh, and since I remembered Truffaut did Bride Wore Black can I go back and change my vote? haha

I'm not giving Wilder anything. Heck he's my favorite director but all things considered my vote might go to Hitchcock if they meet, because he's made more good movies.

I was overboard on the no wilder criticism rule, but all I was curious about was what is it you don't like about him.

I don't get all the George Cukor hate. Do Gone With the Wind, The Women, Holiday, The Philadelphia Story, Gaslight, Adam's Rib, Born Yesterday, A Star is Born, and My Fair Lady mean nothing?

Guest WrestlingDeacon

Thought you might like to see the bit of trivia below Jingus. Cukor was not the only or primary director on Gone with the Wind as he quit, I believe in disputes with the director David Selznick. Victor Fleming is credited with the film.

You get nothing but Cukor love from me. Hell, I even took a film class on the guy. I'd have to say Adam's Rib is my favorite film of his, but Heller in Pink Tights is one of the worst westerns I've ever seen.

"This film had three directors, George Cukor being the first. Victor Fleming, (who had just finished Wizard of Oz, The (1939)) was brought in, and he was replaced by interim director Sam Wood for a few weeks while recovering from exhaustion. Cukor filmed about 33 minutes of footage, 17 of which appear in the first half of the film, they are: Ellen O'Hara returns home (except for Victor Jory and closeup of Thomas Mitchell); evening prayer services at Tara; Mammy and Scarlett prepare for the Twelve Oaks barbecue; the widow Hamilton tries on a bonnet in her bedroom (single shot); various non-dialogue shots at the Atlanta Bazaar, including far shots of Scarlett and Rhett waltzing; Scarlett gives Ashley a sash and begs his love; all scenes in and around Aunt Pittypat's house on the day of evacuation (except for Scarlett stops a dispatch rider); the burning of the Atlanta Depot (except for actors' close-ups)."

What suprises me is how big a lead Oliver Stone has over George Cuckor. One reason might be alot of people don't know who Cuckor is.

::sends hitmen out to murder Stone's entire family::

And yeah, I know he only co-directed GWTW, but even a small part of that movie is more than most directors can say they've done.

Probably it's because the majority of people voting here are guys. If this was a girl's poll anybody that had a hand in Gone with the Wind would win. It's just the 30's version of a chick flick. If it was made today it'd have Meg Ryan in it.

I would just like to say that I am not bringing the George Cuckor "hate" simply the George Cuckor "not love". Sure Cuckor has been assigned some good movies (My Fair Lady is the only musical I like- however, Rex Harrison takes full responsibility for that) but I for one don't think Cuckor puts his stamp on films in the manner that Stone does. Which makes Stone's successes (Platoon, JFK) stronger in his favor than Cuckor's.

But if one believes (like I do) that Stone's "stamp" means turning any potentially good movie into complete and utter shit...

then yeah, I would probably vote Cuckor. As I said, I really don't want Stone to advance because I'm really just not a big fan of his but based on the pairings alone, I could watch a good Stone movie over any Cuckor flick.
