Guest LooseCannon Posted March 7, 2002 Report Posted March 7, 2002 There were many years that the wrong movie won, and there were many years where fatuous movies that were popular but not very good also won. But in terms of movies that were mediocre in just about every respect and had absolutley no business even being nominated, two stick out: Braveheart and Gladiator.
Guest Anorak Posted March 8, 2002 Report Posted March 8, 2002 If Titanic would have bombed at the box office then it would have won about a dozen of those Raspberry awards and pretty much ignored by the academy (there was a time people thought it was going to be another Waterworld and become the most expensive flop in movie history). As a result of the complete opposite happening it went on to pick up a dozen oscars instead, there's a very fine and shallow line between a film being remembered for being a great success or failure. I doubt there's much chance of Titanic being remembered for being a great piece of filmmaking.
