Atlantic Wrestling League (AWL)

Recommended Posts

Guest Longdogger_Pete

Since I don't like the new boards over at EWR, I've decided to start up my new game diary here instead. Comments and suggestions always welcome. Since I had only held one show so far, I'll begin by reposting my old thread into here... so don't be surprised to find several posts from me to start things off.

By the way, on that first show, for most of the show, I just cut & pasted descriptions of the matches here... yeah, I know, I'm lazy. The next show will be more descriptive, I promise.

Okay, this is EWR 1.4 as is with no scenarios or alterations loaded in, except for the new promotion, AWL, the Atlantic Wrestling League. I started it off at Cult level, image 65% (same as RoH at the beginning), started picking up whatever free agents I could find to kick off my roster, and here we go!

Wednesday, January 1, 2003

Signed the following workers to start my roster:

Balls Mahoney - midcard face - over 55

Chris Candido - upper midcard heel - over 65

Chris Hamrick - midcard heel - over 52

CW Anderson - upper midcard heel - over 60

Danny Doring - upper midcard face - over 58

EZ Money - midcard heel - over 54

Marty Jannetty - upper midcard face - over 62

Psicosis - upper midcard heel - over 65

Road Dogg - upper midcard face - over 65

Roadkill - upper midcard face - over 61

Scott Hall - main event face - over 80

Sean Waltman - main event heel - over 70

Super Crazy - upper midcard face - over 59

Tempest - main event heel - over 73

There's my framework. I'll pick up more workers to round out the roster before the month is over.

Since there's no TV deal in place yet, my first show will be the monthly event. January's event is AWL Gauntlet, and though no matches are formally announced yet, I have decided that the main event will be a battle royal for the new AWL World Championship. Also during AWL Gauntlet, two other titles will be determined, so we shall see our first AWL Tag Team and AWL Cruiserweight champions.

Yeah, it isn't much yet, but I wanted to get the message out, so here it is. More as it happens...

Okay, time for the show, and here's how I'm going to handle it. I'll display the Keith commentary for each match and then give my own comments at the end of the match. For angles and interviews, I'll use the Keith commentary but will edit them to fit the storyline better. By the way, I haven't watched a whole lot of wrestling outside WWE, so I'm only aware of most of these guys from what I read about them. So don't be surprised and don't nitpick too much if these guys don't really follow character guidelines they've established in real life.

AWL GAUNTLET RESULTS

Match Quality - 72%

Crowd Reaction - 27%

Overall Rating - 49%

(Comments: Outstanding matchup from these two young performers that just didn't get the crowd reaction they wanted - it was a dark match, after all. The match impressed me though, and we'll be seeing more of these two in the near future.)

Sean Waltman is backstage. He was on hype duty tonight, this time for a match with Scott Hall.

Q: "Sean, why have you challenged Scott Hall to a falls count anywhere match here tonight?"

A: "Why do you ask so many questions? Suffice it to say I've got some unfinished business with my 'old friend' from the NWO. Now get out of my face, punk!"

Overall Rating - 53%

WINNERS AND NEW CHAMPIONS: EZ MONEY & SEAN O'HAIRE

Keith Rating - 2-3/4 stars

Match Quality - 76%

Crowd Reaction - 54%

Overall Rating - 65%

(Comments: Another outstanding match occurs as the thrown together team of EZ Money and Sean O'Haire meshes together well enough to take home tag team gold.)

Tempest comes down to the ring, carrying a microphone. He points toward the entrance: 'Bill DeMott, get out here'. DeMott comes out, and stands on the stage. Tempest speaks : 'Bill, it's not enough that I meet you and eight other guys in the World title battle royal later tonight - I want a piece of you one-on-one next week! Are you Tough Enough for that?'. Bill DeMott looks around at the crowd. 'Am I Tough Enough for that? Hell no... I'm Tough Enough to take you on... right now!'. DeMott runs down and slides into the ring in front of Tempest...and the fight is on! They exchange wild punches. Within seconds, road agents and security officers hit the ring and drag them apart, ending this ugly scene.

Scott Hall is walking through some corridors backstage, obviously on his way to take on Sean Waltman... next!

WINNER: SCOTT HALL

Keith Rating - 3 stars

Match Quality - 63%

Crowd Reaction - 71%

Overall Rating - 68%

(Comments: Good match, but not quite the masterpiece I was hoping for. The crowd reaction was there but the in-ring work was so so. I'll have to watch how I book these two in the near future. Road Dogg has a run in at the end of the match, which has the makings of a feud with former tag partner Waltman.)

Sean Waltman, still in the ring, picks up a microphone. He points toward the entrance: 'Road Dogg, get your ass back out here'. Dogg comes out, and stands on the stage. Waltman speaks : 'Let's make this short - i want a match'. Road Dogg looks around at the crowd. 'Haven't you heard that you should be careful what you wish for? You'll get your match - but not here - instead, you'll get it on MY terms'. Dogg walks off, leaving Waltman in the ring.

Post Show Notes:

AWL Gauntlet attendance was 2500.

Sean O'Haire would like to be promoted up the card.

(I'll consider it. In my opinion it's too soon to tell right now.)

AWL World Title is -2 image (73)

AWL Cruiserweight Title is +4 image (54)

AWL Tag Team Title is +2 image (52)

Doug Basham is +6 over (35)

Reckless Youth is +3 over (30)

Scott Hall is -1 over (79)

Sean Waltman is -3 over (67)

Tempest is -2 over (71)

Interesting that most of my main eventers dropped in overness - I suppose they were a little overexposed. Meanwhile, the dark match participants took a big jump in overness, which impressed me.

Notes:

Public image is down from 65% to 62% this month. The drop was caused by running house shows without a full roster, as I didn't finish signing everyone until January 9th. Image had dropped to 60%, but the success of AWL Gauntlet brought it back up to 62%.

The financial report, however, is positive. Last month AWL turned a profit of $229,000. That gives me a little legroom to work with if I decide to sign some more talent.

Haku has become a "non-wrestler." Go figure. I get one match out of him and now he's through. Well, don't expect me to make him commissioner or anything. He is under a verbal contract -- should I keep him or get rid of him? Suggestions anyone?

AWL is now on television! Every Tuesday night, on Comedy Central (???) you can now catch AWL Onslaught! Watch the debut of Onslaught this Tuesday, February 4, 2003.

Matches Confirmed for Onslaught - Tuesday, February 4, 2003

Non Title Match

Bill DeMott vs. Tempest

AWL Cruiserweight Championship

Super Crazy (champion) vs. Psicosis

Tag Team Match

Road Dogg & Scott Hall vs. Sean Waltman & a partner of his choosing

Also on Onslaught, we'll have the first round of the month-long Tag Team Title Contendership Tournament, an elimination tournament that will culminate in a tag title match at February's as yet untitled special event.

Fun little diary.

Two Things:

1) Why did you decide to make Tempest champ? Just wondering, since the obvious choice would have been someone like Hall or Waltman.

2) Drop Haku like a bad habit.

Hall or Waltman would have been an obvious choice, and that's exactly why I didn't go with them. The story I was going for was that at the time, Hall and Waltman were more focused on each other, and that lack of focus gave Tempest an edge. Don't worry, I'm starting up some new feuds this week, and with the change of direction, Hall and Waltman will remain at the top of the card.

And Haku's dropped. More news on this later.

Onslaught will be up today, so stay tuned...

A lot happening here. I bought out MWO (yay). No written contracts picked up except for an extra referee, but hey, it's one less promotion out there.

I've signed a few new faces. I wanted to have a commissioner and a couple of women in the league. I signed the women as managers for the time being, since there really isn't much of a women's division yet.

To cut costs after these new signings, I decided to release Haku. He then sent me an angry letter telling me he'll never work for me again. And that's perfectly fine with me.

Signed:

Bret Hart - non-wrestler face - over 86

Jacqueline - manager heel - over 28

Lita - manager face - over 85

Now that I've got TV, I've set up a few feuds to make things interesting.

New Feuds:

Road Dogg vs. Sean Waltman - Starting Heat 70

CW Anderson vs. Randy Orton - Starting Heat 68

Chris Candido vs. Marty Jannetty - Starting Heat 72

Scott Hall vs. Tempest - Starting Heat 81

AWL ONSLAUGHT 2/4/03

Onslaught's theme music plays, we get a quick introduction from the announcers, and suddenly we cut backstage to an image of... Bret Hart?! "Hello everyone... this is Bret 'The Hitman' Hart... the NEW commissioner of Atlantic Wrestling League. Welcome to the debut of AWL Onslaught. As commissioner it'll be my job to bring you the most exciting two hours of television we can possibly produce. Tonight you'll see new AWL Cruiserweight Champion Super Crazy defend his title for the first time against Psicosis. The new AWL World Champion, Tempest will also be in action, in a non-title match against Bill DeMott of Tough Enough fame. And in our main event, Scott Hall and the Road Dogg will team up in a tag match against Sean Waltman and a partner of his choosing. It's sure to be a blast, so stay with us here on AWL Onslaught!"

Hit Squad (Mafia & Monster Mack) vs Hotshots (Cassidy O'Reilly & Chase Stevens)

1st Round Match - Tag Title Contendership Tournament

This is the AWL debut match for both of these teams. Mafia and Cassidy O'Reilly start off the match. Mafia gets some quick offensive action in on O'Reilly, knocking him down good, but misses the pinfall. Mafia tags in his partner, Monster Mack, for some double team action from the Hit Squad. Mack continues the offense but O'Reilly counters with a running dropkick and then tags in Chase Stevens. Stevens splashes off the top rope for a cover on Monster Mack, but Mack kicks out in time. Stevens clamps a headlock down on Monster Mack, but Mack recovers and slams Stevens to the mat. Both men are down for a moment, reaching out to their respective partners, and then -- hot tag! Mafia and O'Reilly come roaring back in. O'Reilly struggles valiantly but can't hold up to Mafia's offense. Mafia hits the Mafia Bomb on Cassidy O'Reilly for the clean pinfall.

Chris Hamrick comes out on stage, carrying a microphone. "Greetings, everyone! Tonight I face Funaki in my first singles match for AWL -- and as great an announcer as everyone seems to think Funaki is, I'm going to prove tonight that he makes a lousy wrestler! I didn't come alone tonight... I'd like to introduce my new manager... Jacqueline!" Jacqueline, ex-WWE diva, emerges on stage and heads down the ramp to a surprised audience. After entering the ring, Jacqueline raises Hamrick's arm, and then the camera cuts to break.

Randy Orton vs Sean O'Haire

Youngster and third-generation superstar Randy Orton takes on one half of the AWL Tag Team Champions, Sean O'Haire, in this singles match. O'Haire takes the early offensive with some flying forearms. The massive O'Haire then hits a powerslam to bring Orton to the mat. Orton quickly kips up, and counters the next slam attempt with a boot to the face. Orton back drops O'Haire and covers for a two count. O'Haire is back up and counters a Randy Orton clothesline, pulling the youngster into a piledriver that leads to another two count. O'Haire looks impressive, manhandling Orton into a powerbomb. One, two, and Orton just barely kicks out before 3. Orton tries to make a comeback, but to no avail, as O'Haire is all over his opponent, hitting a Rude Awakening. Suddenly CW Anderson comes running down the ramp and climbs up to the apron. Orton turns in surprise, and Anderson takes advantage, grabbing Orton by the neck and slamming his head into the turnbuckle! The referee shoos Anderson out of the way, but the damage is done, as O'Haire hits his finisher - Cruel Intentions on Randy Orton. One, two, three, and the match is over. Anderson climbs into the ring, and along with O'Haire begins stomping away at Orton until the road agents break it up and we mercifully go to break.

We cut backstage, and see Funaki walking down the corridor, preparing to come to the ring for his match. The camera is close up on Funaki's face as he walks, but a female voice is heard talking to him. "Don't worry about a thing, Funaki. I know you can beat Chris Hamrick tonight, and if his new manager Jacqueline gives you any trouble, I promise, she's going to have me to contend with." The camera then pans up to close in on the speaker's face, and the audience pops when the face is revealed to be none other than Lita!

Overall Rating - 58%

Chris Hamrick (w/Jacqueline) vs Funaki

Hamrick takes advantage early, with a drop kick followed by a lightning kick to take down the Japanese lightweight. Hamrick goes for the cover but only scores two. Funaki gets up and reverses Hamrick's ofense with a few high flying maneuvers, finishing up with a missile dropkick into Hamrick's knees. Funaki tries for the cover but only manages two. Funaki tries for a suplex but is just too small, as Hamrick powers out and follows up with a superkick. Hamrick goes for a cover. One, two, no good. Hamrick continues to punish Funaki, at one point hitting an axe handle from the second rope, but Funaki manages a comeback with a flying neckbreaker. Funaki lifts Hamrick up again -- and notices Jacqueline standing on the apron, taunting Funaki! Hamrick takes advantage of Funaki's distraction with another superkick, but Funaki ducks, and the superkick strikes Jacqueline! Funaki laughs it off and succeeds in a tornado DDT on Hamrick for the pinfall.

Super Crazy vs Psicosis (For The AWL Cruiserweight Title)

In Super Crazy's first defense of the new Cruiserweight Title, the high flyer gets a decent high kick down on challenger Psicosis. Crazy spins around for a back heel kick and then comes off the ropes for a drop kick that takes down Psicosis. Super Crazy goes for a cover but to no avail as Psicosis kicks out. Psicosis is up for only a few seconds before a Super Crazy spin kick takes him down again. Crazy tries for a second cover... one, two, no good. Psicosis shoves Crazy out of the way and then takes him down with a leg lariat. Psicosis follows up with a flying cross body off the top rope. Psicosis fails in his first cover attempt. Lots of high flying action ensues until Super Crazy reverses a waistlock and scores a back heel kick off the second rope to send Psicosis to the mat. Crazy climbs to the top rope and leaps -- Triple Moonsault! Incredible finish! That one's over.

Former Tough Enough 2 competitor Matt Morgan is seen backstage, but is attacked out of nowhere by a steel chair! The chair slams across Morgan's skull, and he drops to the concrete floor. The camera pans up to the attacker -- the AWL World Champion, Tempest! "You're one of those Tough Enough boys, aren't you?" hollers Tempest, raising the chair maniacally. "Well, this is a message for that other Tough Enough boy, Bill DeMott! Just a little preview of what I'm going to do to him!" Tempest raises the chair for another blow, but it's pulled out of his hands from behind, by Bill DeMott! DeMott and Tempest begin exchanging punches but officials quickly arrive to break them apart. Bill DeMott vs. Tempest is next!

Non Title Match

Bill DeMott vs Tempest

Tempest strikes DeMott early, but doesn't keep his momentum going as DeMott counters with a stiff chop. DeMott goes for a clothesline but Tempest ducks it, and DeMott inadvertently knocks out the referee! DeMott manages to spear Tempest and covers, but the referee is still out. DeMott stands and goes for a legdrop but is met with a spin kick to the face from Tempest. Tempest leaps onto DeMott for a hurricanrana, and hooks the leg. The now conscious referee counts two before DeMott kicks out. Tempest continues to punish Bill DeMott wth some nasty kicks, but DeMott powers out of another cover attempt. DeMott stands, and hits another spear. Tempest kicks out of a cover just before three. Tempest sucker punches Bill DeMott in the gut, knocking him over. The referee protests, getting in Tempest's face, but Tempest clocks the referee! The ref goes down for the second time. DeMott knocks Tempest off to the outside, but Tempest grabs the ring bell and comes back in, striking DeMott across the head! Tempest tosses the bell aside and pins DeMott just as the referee comes to. One, two, three! The match is over, but suddenly Scott Hall comes running down the ramp with a chair! Scott Hall swings at Tempest, knocking the champion down with a chair shot to the back! Hall leaves Tempest lying in the ring as we go to break.

We cut to CW Anderson standing backstage with a microphone. "Why did I attack Randy Orton earlier tonight? Because Randy Orton thinks he's on the fast track to success. He's a pretty boy, and I don't like pretty boys. It's time he learned that in this business, you don't get everything handed to you on a silver platter!"

Road Dogg & Scott Hall vs. Sean Waltman & ???

Road Dogg & Scott Hall emerge using separate entrances to get the crowd cheering for the two faces. Sean Waltman is out next, and he hesitates at the bottom of the ramp as he waits for his chosen partner... Chris Candido! The match starts up with Scott Hall and Sean Waltman, and Waltman takes an early advantages, hitting Hall with a loud chop and following with a DDT. The ring shakes violently from the DDT. Waltman goes for a cover... only good for two. Waltman tags out to Chris Candido, and the heels double team Scott Hall, whipping him into the corner. Waltman then whips Candido to the corner for a power clothesline on Hall. Candido strikes Hall with a spin kick to the face, but Hall counters Candido's next move with a powerslam. Hall tags out to Road Dogg, who manages a big piledriver on Candido. Dogg bodyslams Candido, and Candido rolls away, leaping up to kick Road Dogg in the face. Candido tags out to Waltman, who drop kicks his old DX partner Road Dogg. Dogg reaches out for his partner -- and makes the tag! Scott Hall comes into the ring, laying out Sean Waltman. Hall picks Waltman up with a finisher, but Waltman lashes out with a spinning heel kick! Waltman then drops Hall to the mat in a quick roll up, grabbing Hall's tights for a tainted victory that the referee doesn't see. One, two, three. Road Dogg and Scott Hall are incensed by the tainted loss, and begin double teaming Waltman after the match. Waltman escapes as Candido attacks Scott Hall. Hall counters the attack and sets up - Outsider's Edge! The heels leave the ring, and the two teams exchange threats as Onslaught goes off the air.

Post Show Notes:

Onslaught attendance was 426. The TV rating was a 0.05. Sounds low, but Comedy Central's maximum is only a 0.15 anyway. Yes, it's a ridiculous network to be airing on, but it serves its purpose until I can get something better.

AWL Cruiserweight Title is +4 image (58)

Bret Hart is -2 over (84)

Chris Hamrick is -2 over (50)

Lita is -4 over (81)

Matt Morgan is +1 over (6)

Big drop in overness for Lita. Yeah, so pairing her with Funaki may not have been the smartest move, but it's just temporary - I have other plans for her. I just wanted to get her on camera for now.

Well, just days after starting this EWR diary, I'm already ending it. Why? Because EWR 2.0 is now released, and I plan to experiment a little. I'll probably start up a new diary in a few days.

Besides, it was about to suck. Scott Hall just got stolen and EZ Money was suspended, totally wrecking two major title scenes.
